Tavern on the Green Files for Bankruptcy

Tavern on the Green, the landmark restaurant in New York City's Central Park, has filed for bankruptcy protection.

The filing comes just four months before the 75-year-old restaurant is to hand over its license to another operator.

Tavern Chief Executive Jennifer Oz LeRoy blames the filing on the financial crisis and New York City's decision to give the Tavern license to a new operator, according to The New York Times.

The new license was granted to Dean J. Poll, who runs the Central Park Boathouse restaurant.

The federal bankruptcy filing lists 20 creditors.

Poll, who takes over Jan. 1, plans to renovate with green technology. The original building, which dates to the 19th century, housed sheep.

LeRoy's father, Warner, took over the Tavern in 1976. He died in 2001.

A few years back, I considered filing bankruptcy. I am a Veteran and had a large amount of hospital bills that SHOULD have been paid by a program that covers medical care when there is no VA facility nearby. (VA is the ONLY medical coverage I have, or am allowed) Since "the wheels of Gov't turn slow", these bills were turned over for collection. To my horror I found out that I would have to pay a $1,600 non-refundable fee, go to "Financial Responsibility Class" before and after the hearing and not get a hearing until 6 months after the origional filing. So, I now have a credit score of 64. Yes, sixty four! But then, as this story shows, if ya got money, you can save money! How many corporations, large businesses and the wealthy have filed and recieved this protection recently? This protection was taken out of the hands of "the little man" and given, as a gift to "the Haves".
