Cops: Bone Near Garrido House Likely Human

By
CBSNews
(CBS)  Police say a bone fragment found near Phillip Garrido's Antioch, Calif. house is probably human.

Garrido, a convicted sex offender, and wife Nancy allegedly kept Jaycee Dugard, now 29, captive in tents and sheds in their backyard for 18 years. Garrido also fathered Dugard's girls, 15 and 11, authorities say.

Additional DNA testing is under way, reports "Early Show" national correspondent Hattie Kauffman, even more about Garrido's past is surfacing.

He once wore long hair, and sang in a band and, even back then, his interests were clear, says former band mate Eddie Loebs, who recalls Garrido as a womanizer with an "association with" porn.

Loebs told celebrity Web site Radaronline.com he saw Garrido snort cocaine and mistreat his first wife. "He'd bring over a girl that he met somewhere," Loebs says, "and his wife would go sleep in the next room."

Newly discovered lyrics said to have been written by Garrido show his obsession with young girls, Kauffman observes. One such lyric: "Feelin' good, la la la, stop and took her for a candy bar."

Special Section: Jaycee Lee Dugard

Twenty years later, Dugard was snatched.

Former prosecutor Michael Cardoza says police sources tell him Garrido and Nancy, his second wife, specifically targeted Jaycee. "The day before Jaycee was actually kidnapped," Cardoza said to CBS News, "the Garridos were out looking, I call it child shopping -- they were out actually looking for someone to kidnap. And they went by a group of little girls, one of which was Jaycee Dugard and, as they went by, Philip said to Nanci, 'Ooh, ooh, I want that one. She's cute. Her. Her.' "

The next day, Kauffman says, the Garridos went back and grabbed Jaycee as she stood alone at a bus stop.

These are pointless arguments about religion when all that needs to be said is this.

THE DEATH PENALTY IS WHAT IS NEEDED WHEN TO TAKE AN 11-YEAR OLD FOR 18 YEARS I MEAN MY GOD WHAT OTHER PENALTY CAN REALLY BE ENOUGH FOR ANYONE WHO KNEW THE FAMILY AND FAMILIES THAT HAVE BEEN THRU THE SAME.

Doublehap:

I see that when you're confronted by valid argumentation and facts you shy away from a conversation and resort to name calling. I doubt that you even know how to define a cult. Perhaps you're making up definitions as you go?

I notice that you get your information from exmormon.org. That tells me something about you: generally a disaffected person who doesn't do real research.

Earlier you cited that Joseph Smith, in his early years, before he established the Church was "convicted" as a criminal? Something like that?

In truth, Joseph Smith readily admitted that he had flaws and thet he was not a perfect individual. However, your claim that Joseph Smith was convicted is unfounded. That Joseph Smith was brought up on trumped up "charges" many times is a matter of historical record, but there is no evidence anywhere that Joseph Smith was indicted or given a verdict in any trial.

This isn't "cult" talk as you can see there aren't any "cult" words in the above paragraph. But if you think there is "cult" talk above. by all means, point it out.

But as far as Prophets go, I suppose the minor mistakes of Joseph Smith don't compare to some of the actions of other Bible prophets: Abraham lied to Pharaoh to save his life and Moses killed an Egyptian.

Is this another double standard? You give a pass to Abraham and Moses but don't forgive Joseph Smith his minor flaws?

As an aside, in the last 10 years, substantial, credible and sufficient archeological evidence has been found to validate the history of the Book of Mormon in south Arabia.

And as you say, that Joseph Smith placed a seer stone into a hat, how does he predicted real geographic, geological and cultural features from 600 BC that no one knew existed in 1830?

Can you naturally explain that?

It would seem Doublehappiness, that I can adequately deprogram your arguments in very little time.

jamesm88888,

What religions are speak so loudly, we cannot hear what they claim to be.

The Garridos, Abraham, Jim Jones, Joseph Smith, Melissa Huckaby, Jim and Tammy Bakker; all are or were religious delusionals and dangerous.

Think of the above, before turning your children over to priests, preachers and Sunday school teachers. The crimes against Jaycee Lee Dugard and her children are religious crimes, committed in the name of religion and above are what religion is all about.

Religion poisons everything, especially children.

Phillip Garrido and Joseph Smith. Essentially identical twins. Scarcely any difference between them.

Right.

I'm certainly glad that the internet has given anonymous cranks a place to vent their hostile nonsense. Otherwise, they might express it in more dangerous ways.

Double Happiness:

Your caricatures of Mormonism and Joseph Smith are absurd and false. While it is no secret that Joseph Smith was a polygamist, and married women, who today would be considered under age, (14, 16, 17) his similarity to Gariddo is unfounded. There is a very important reason why there is no similarity.

Joseph Smith received consent to marry all of his wives, from the wife, the parents, and in many cases other relatives.

Gariddo was a convicted rapist who first brutalized women and then later kidnapped an underage girl.

In many cases, Joseph Smith's marriage were dynastic only (only for life after death) and were not consummated. In fact, although Joseph Smith had multiple wives, there is no DNA evidence that he fathered any children with any of them except his first wife Emma Hale Smith.

In the case of Helen Mar Kimball, she continued to live with her parents after their "ceremonial" marriage.

And about the underage wives of Joseph Smith, in the 1830s, marriage consent laws were very young. It was no uncommon for older men to marry 16, 17, 18, and 19 year olds. Such was their custom. They did not believe it to be immoral or socially wrong.

Your attempts to paint Joseph Smith in an unfavorable light according to consent laws today, is akin to bearing false witness.

Furthermore, Mormons find it VERY odd, that traditional Christians vicuiously attack Joseph Smith for his plural marriages when the prophet Fathers of Christianity, Judaism, and Islam were polygamists: Abraham and Jacob. Jacob had 4 wives from whom came the 12 tribes of Israel.

Christians seek to be the "seed" of Abraham through faith in Jesus Christ but they fail to admit or realize that it is a "polygamous" seed indeed. Mormons find it highly hypocritical to give Abraham and Jacob a pass on polygamy but not early Mormons.

In truth, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints abandoned the practice of polygamy in 1890. It's been over a 100 years since there was a Mormon polygamist.

And what does this have to do with Gariddo? Nothing. It was your attempt to false accuse Joseph Smith and try to associate criminality with Mormonism.

This kind of accusation usually comes from religious bigots and not rational and honest minded folks.

Wow! The cult did a remarkable job a brainwashing on you. The cult must have worked on you from birth. That is child abuse, in my view.

No thanks for the myth-information. I prefer public records and history, not cult propaganda. Seek a deprogrammer.

-There should be a warm place in hell for Phillip Gerardo and his wife for doing this to that little girl. There should also be some questions asked of the neighbors and local housing authorities about tents and such in the yard of a home for so many years. All of the property should be forfeited to the girl (a woman now) and her two children to educate and comfort them.

Is "likely human" another police term like "person of interest?"

Hey, how did this turn into 'kick the mormons?' I find them as amusing as I do other organized religions, certainly - but for the most part, they make good neighbors. Let's not confuse them (or catholics, for that matter, who have a much longer and equally hilarious history) with a CRAZY guy who we HAD IN CUSTODY and released because our legal system doesn't recognize any difference between "CRAZY GUY WILL DO IT AGAIN" and "Dumb Kid Stole My Car". Punishment will not deter this man, treatment will not heal him, religion will not make him repentent, he will do this again if he is released. And while his condition is not 'common' it is well-understood in the psychiatric community and he is not the only one who will be released on 'parole' -- to the care of a parole officer who has NO TRAINING in what he is. Like giving a rabid pup to a 10 year old to teach him responsibility. We need work on our legal system, we need better training for our parole officers, and we need to re-think paroling CRAZY people.

I think what this man and his wife did is totally evil. No excuses - death penalty for both would be a handsome payback - Religion or no religion - no excuses - We have people losing their homes, businesses, etc. in this country - We will spend a fortune on these two evil idiots to convict them - Take other countries - have the family pay for the bullet - End of story - Put the needed money towards schools, etc.

Why does Joseph?s name appear in comments for a story totally unrelated to him? And why is there such anger towards him? The man has been dead for 165 years. Let him rest in peace. It never ceases to amaze me how Joseph?s name continues to be used for ?good and evil? just like the angel said. And for those of you who are so sure he was an evil man and started polygamy in the LDS Church, you need to broaden your view and read the over two volumes of evidence supporting the opposite at www.restorationbookstore.org/jsfp-index.htm.

Dear Self-Deluded Defender;
I will leave the reading of cult propaganda to you but, if you are really interested, try reading history and public records. For example, you will find public records of Joseph Smith?s two commitments to a mental institution for what was likely schizophrenia.

Smith?s unholy name was mentioned because of behavioral similarities to those of Phillip Garrido.

Still having trouble understanding? Try not moving your lips when you read and seek help for your reading comprehension problem.

I wouldn't say that to Ted Nugent. You'd wake up on the floor.
