Iran Leader Defiant Amid Nuke "Stalemate"

(AP)  President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Monday Iran will neither halt uranium enrichment nor negotiate over its nuclear rights but is ready to sit and talk with world powers over "global challenges."

His statements came as the international nuclear watchdog warned of a "stalemate" over Iran's nuclear program. Members of the U.N.'s International Atomic Energy Agency began meetings in Vienna that could set the stage for a toughening of sanctions against Iran.

Ahmadinejad also said Iran will present a package of proposals for talks to the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council plus Germany but rejected any deadline for such talks.

He said the package would "identify challenges facing humanity ... and resolve global concerns."

But he said that "from our point of view, Iran's nuclear issue is over. We continue our work within the framework of global regulations and in close interaction with the International Atomic Energy Agency." But "we will never negotiate over obvious rights of the Iranian nation," he said.

He said the only two aspects of the nuclear file he was willing to discuss were "creating peaceful nuclear energy for all countries" and the mechanisms for international nuclear disarmament.

President Obama and European allies have given Iran until the end of September to take up an offer of nuclear talks with six world powers and enjoy trade incentives should it suspend uranium enrichment activities. If not, Iran could face harsher punitive sanctions.

The U.S. and some of its allies accuse Iran of using its civilian nuclear program as a cover to develop nuclear weapons. Iran has denied the charges, saying its nuclear program is aimed at generating electricity, not a bomb.

Iran has repeatedly vowed it will never suspend enrichment work, saying it has every right under the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty to enrich uranium and produce nuclear fuel. The enrichment process can produce either fuel for a reactor or the material for a warhead.

"It is very clear that this (deadline) is incompatible with the Iranian nation's needs and direction today," Ahmadinejad told a press conference Monday. "Resolving global issues requires constructive interaction on the basis of justice and respect."

Ahmadinejad said Iran will continue to cooperate with the IAEA over regulations on safeguards on its nuclear sites, "but we will resist if the agency is influenced by political pressures."

The agency's chief Mohamed ElBaradei, however, said Monday that the situation over Iran's nuclear program has reached a "stalemate."

He said Iran has not suspended uranium enrichment and not cleared up other lingering questions about its atomic activities, and he urged Tehran to "substantively re-engage" with the IAEA.

Iran says allegations of nuclear weapons studies by Tehran is based on forged documents but the U.S. and its European allies want to draw Iran back into negotiations over such concerns.

"The proposals we have prepared seeks to identify challenges facing humanity and basic directions for a durable solution to those challenges ... we are ready, within a logical and just framework, to sit and talk with all those ... who can make contribution to reform global affairs," Ahmadinejad told reporters.

Iran has said the incentives package has some "common ground" with Tehran's own proposals for a resolution to the standoff.

Germany and France - both important trade partners with Iran - have recently become far more forceful in their threats of possible sanctions.

Ahmadinejad did not directly address Mr. Obama's calls for a U.S.-Iran dialogue, and instead renewed an offer he has made in the past to hold a public debate with the U.S. president.

"Once again, I announce that I'm ready for debate and dialogue in front of global media on global issues," he said.

I like how much CBS has turned into Pravda as they have deleted 19 posts here since yesterday and most were in reply to conspiracy theorists who reside here.

You do not need to Enriched Uranium to generate electricity; go north and find out. It's safer and cheaper (I think) Better yet, there is a substitute for the Uranium; why don?t you challenge them to see they can get it to work first. CBS, why don?t you try to find out what I am talking about?

Earth562.....So how much are you members of "megaphone" (wiki Megaphone Israel) and the Israeli message board defenders paid from the Israel Defense Force for posting responses to those public forum posts that are critical of Israel?

Are you paid by the post, originality, word count, or by the hour. Be candid and honest if you can.

I also noticed that you were really grasping for straws trying to defend Israel against their uncommon greed and inhumane actions regarding the Swedish accusations against them in the children's human organ theft market. Some people have no scruples.

BTW it is good that the global media market still has some independence of ownership that is outside the realm of Israel first. That does provide some objectivity instead of propaganda.

Israel created the nuclear arms race in the Middle East when they illegally manufactured their own nuclear arms. Now they want to attack another country for doing exactly what they did.

Israel should no longer be trusted with nukes as they have demonstrated a continuation of strong arm irrational aggressive behavior against often unarmed citizens in its neighboring countries. They apparently have no scruples or values except to their own. Now they are even stealing human organs from the Palestinians according to the Swedish press, because they refuse to donate their own. Wiki it.

oh..its you again...the local apologist on CBS.COM

You ignore the atrocities committed by Israel, in their genocide / extermination campaign against the Palestinians.

I recognize the atrocities on BOTH sides.

The only apologist here, is you.

But being brainwashed by religion will do that to a person.

It figures you "never heard Hitler threaten Poland either"

In your bizzaro world left is right and up is down and 2 x 2 equalls 5.

In your little brain you start reading a book on page 132 and skip to page 194 and ignore the reasons of why, when and where. You probably passed high school with crib notes.

My bizzaro world?

You didn't "hear" Israel threaten it's neighbors, therefore the 60+ years of atrocities, genocide, forced displacement, human right violations, etc, etc, never happened and don't exist according to you, and you claim that I live in a "bizarro world"?

And then you resort to posting absurdities like "2 x 2 = 5" as some sort of deflection away from you own lunacy, to try and blame me for recognizing HISTORY as it actually happened?

Auntie Achmed,

Did you ever hear of Israel ever threaten her neighbors ?

(crickets)

Threaten their neighbors?!?!

You ignore 60+ years of atrocities, human rights violations, genocide, etc, etc, etc, to instead try and deflect the conversation of Israeli atrocities, based simply on "threats" by Israel to it's neighbors?!?!?

Now that you mention it, I never heard Hitler threaten Poland either.

Using your standards, I guess that makes Hitler a "good and decent, but misunderstood person" - like Israel is.

You're a crackpot!!

The Iranian political machine still has clerics in control and elected leaders serving them as their puppets.

Their nuclear weapon ambitions are far from reality and eat up much of their Gross Domestic Product to finance and develop.

Their best effort to create a weapon may actually materialize in the form of two small tactical weapons barely capable inflicting destruction. It wouldn't deter an attack. It wouldn't be considered a formidable weapon for launching an attack.

WE MUST PREVENT THE MANIACAL, ISLAMOFASCIST/APOCALYPTIC, IRANIAN REGIME, ANY NUCLEAR CAPABILITY, AS IT CANNOT BE TRUSTED.

The current MANIACAL, ISLAMOFASCIST/APOCALYPTIC, IRANIAN REGIME is not working in the interest of the world's people and nations.

The following article applies particularly to the current Islamofascist Iranian regime.

NOTHING CHANGES THE DIRECTION OF THE APOCALYPTIC MINDSET -
ALL OF WHICH IS CAUSED BY DANGEROUS AND DEADLY RELIGIOUS FANTASY

If the progressive, secular, free - mainly Western, non-Islamofascist - world does not put a stop to the destructiveness that religion has ON THE ENTIRE WORLD, we can EXPECT total or near-total death and destruction. And that means virtually all of the totally innocent flora and fauna (who quite frankly deserve to live, and have the right to live far more than mankind does), will also be wiped out!

This planet's total destruction is much closer than many of us can conceive. In fact, if we measure our time remaining on the Doomsday Clock, we should set it at about ONE AND A HALF MINUTES TO MIDNIGHT, because with the advent of nuclear and other weapons and devices of massive destruction being acquired by religiously maniacal nations and/or religiously maniacal individuals, groups, and/or the similar APOCALYPTICALLY-MINDED...

It is STRONGLY RECOMMENDED that our Western and other Free World leaders coordinate their efforts as the number one priority, to hunt down and eliminate these religiously maniacal barbarians, and to prevent and neutralize ANY NUCLEAR CAPABILITIES of maniacally religious nations and religiously maniacal entities, from acquiring or producing nuclear or other weapons or devices of mass destruction.

If it takes massive military action - AND SOONER RATHER THAN LATER - to accomplish the forgoing, we owe no apologies for doing so, as OUR SURVIVAL IS AT STAKE!!!
