37 Suspected Militants Killed In Pakistan

(CBS/AP)  Last updated 8:10 a.m. ET.

Pakistan says paramilitary troops have killed 37 suspected militants and destroyed one of their bases in an ongoing operation in the northwestern tribal region of Khyber.

The paramilitary Frontier Corps announced the deaths in a statement Saturday.

The toll could not immediately be confirmed independently.

Militants frequently attack trucks along the famed Khyber Pass. It's of the main routes used to ferry supplies to NATO and U.S. forces in neighboring Afghanistan.

The Taliban-affiliated group Lashkar-e-Islam is a main target of the latest government offensive. Authorities say the operation has killed scores of militants.

The offensive was launched late last month after a suicide bombing at a border checkpoint killed 19 police.

Also today, lawyers say a Pakistani anti-terrorism court has resumed pretrial proceedings against five suspects in last year's attacks on the Indian city of Mumbai that killed 166 people.

"suspected" is the key. I know for sure only the indigenous innocents are dying to please the blood-thirsty US leaders and its criminal population. Mexico, Russia!!! When are you invading to clean up the criminals !!!!

Yes.....FINALLY......there was a time last year where it looked like they'd sit back and the taliban would erode the structure of their country.....I think if they waited any longer it could have happened. Thankfully they didnt'.......and now that they have made an offensive against them..there is no going back so now I would think that they would keep pushing forward despite the lack of public support in Pakistan for it.

If Pakistan does keep on the offensive and this article seems to point in the direction that they will......it could prove to be paramount to the war on terror as Pakistani soil had been essentially the last real good safe haven for the extremists. If they can't hide there....then there is little elsewhere to hide......and that is a good thing as if you have the Pakistani's making a strong push and the USA is increasing its focus in the area....it could really yield some dramatic results in dismantling the overall structure of the Taliban and Al Queada....however US and Pakistani casualties will be un-avoidable.

Many are calling for the war to end...when in fact it is just getting started.

This sounds like a war of attrition to me.

I have often read that war is a long succession of errors....the side making the fewest errors will win.

Going to Iraq and allowing the Taliban to escape into Pakistan was the biggest tactical error permitted under the Bush/Cheney Administration.

Bush was amazingly good at taking his eye off the ball.

All they have to do is tell the Pakistanis that the tribal area is under India's control to go in and finish it.
