Tortuous September Ahead for Obama

By
CBSNews
(AP)  President Barack Obama confronts a tortuous September - and it's not just the divisive political fight over health care.

Back from his first presidential vacation, a break truncated by the death and remembrance of Sen. Edward M. Kennedy and the nomination of the Federal Reserve chief to a new term, Obama settles back into the Oval Office well aware his approval ratings have fallen.

He now must spend heavily from that shrinking fund of political capital - with a highly uncertain outcome - if his vision of a health care overhaul is to emerge from Congress.

The White House has confusingly indicated, then backed away from the possible abandonment of the government-run public option designed to cover the 50 million or so Americans who have no health insurance. Such a lower-cost plan would embrace those who can't afford insurance or don't have it through their workplace. It also, the argument goes, would force private companies to lower the cost of insurance premiums to stay competitive.

That plan faces fierce opposition among Republicans and many conservative Democrats, and it will take a huge amount of White House muscle to keep it alive.

CBSNews.com Special Report: Health Care

Then there is Afghanistan and declining support nearly eight years after the U.S. invaded and drove the militant Islamic Taliban from power, forcing its al Qaeda allies - including Osama bin Laden, it is believed - to scatter to mountain hideouts across the border in Pakistan.

The administration has said it plans this month to finish a reassessment of the war to which Obama has already dispatched nearly 20,000 additional troops, raising the total to about 68,000 by year's end.

As part of the study, commanding Gen. Stanley McChrystal is widely expected to ask for even more forces, as he tries to implement the kind of counterinsurgency strategy that prevented Iraq from descending into all-out civil war two years ago.

McChrystal Calls for New Afghan Strategy

While American support for the Bush administration's conduct of the Iraq war quickly vanished after the 2003 invasion, backing for the U.S. mission in Afghanistan had held steady. But a recent Washington Post-ABC news poll shows that only 49 percent of Americans now think the fight is worth it. Sliding confidence may diminish further as American troop deaths increase.

That would put Obama at odds with a slim majority of Americans who doubt the U.S. mission and his promise to free Afghanistan from the brutal and resurgent grip of the Taliban while making the region unsafe for al Qaeda.

Column: Polling Shows Public Is Turning Against Afghan War

There also is growing unease about Iraq, where a Bush administration-negotiated plan will have all U.S. combat troops out of that country a year from now. Political upheaval awaits as the Shiite majority has shoved Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki out of its coalition in advance of national elections. Sunni bombers - many say they represent al Qaeda in Iraq - are again making the country very unsafe with increased attacks that have killed hundreds of Iraqis.

September, therefore, may be a very difficult month in Iraq, an unwelcome distraction for Obama as he confronts an already overwhelming agenda of decisions that will be key to success in the remainder of his administration. That's especially so for congressional Democrats who face re-election next year.

Just as important but less spoken of: Obama has set a Sept. 15 deadline for Iran to respond to U.S. overtures about negotiating over its nuclear program. The United States and many allies contend that Iran is trying to produce a nuclear weapon under the cover of a civilian program that it says is designed only to generate electricity.

The president, while trying to engage the Iranian leadership, is under heavy pressure from Israel to step up every attempt to combat the possibility that Tehran will achieve nuclear-armed status. President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has called for Israel's obliteration.

Ahmadinejad's tainted re-election this summer left the country's leadership in chaos and likely unable to focus on Obama's call for negotiations. Failing a positive response, the administration has vowed to seek onerous international sanctions, but Russia and China have balked throughout the sanctions process - Russia fearing loss of lucrative trade deals, China because it depends heavily on Iranian oil.

Depending on how or whether the Iranians respond to the Obama overture, he could become embroiled late in the month at the U.N. General Assembly session in trying to persuade Russia and China to join the international community in tough actions against Tehran - likely a monumental task.

For added spice to Obama's plate, there's an economy that may or may not be pulling out of its closest brush with collapse since the Great Depression.

Oh, and don't forget Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi will be turning up on U.S. shores for the General Assembly shortly after giving a hero's welcome to the only one of his countrymen convicted in the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103. Scotland set him free so he could go home to die of prostate cancer. Americans are outraged. So is Obama, but he can't deny Gadhafi access to the United Nations.

Congressman: Gadhafi Won't Stay in N.J.

hungry1968-16 I never said I was for the wars we are in now you do alot of assuming. And I did do a lot of crawling on my hands and knees, scraping my underside in order to stay alive 40 years ago. But you probably wouldn't know anything about that. It's OK if you libs go back in history, but it's not OK for anybody that disagree's with you.

I don't consider the last 8 years of the Bush regime "history", since we're suffering from the effects of conservatism, and will be suffering from those effects for years to come.

My point is don't decry democrats or liberals, when you have to go back 40+ years to decry them, while thinking that you can put a blindfold on and ignore all of the disasters that conservatism have wreaked on this country.

Bush said at one point, "It will take historians 40 or 50 years to complete writing my legacy."

He's correct. The wounded and maimed for life veterans will live at least that long.

THAT is the legacy of conservatism. (Along with our nation's economic implosion.)

Conservatism is a failure, and it's done far more damage to our nation that ALL forms of terrorism combined.

hungry1968-16, So we forget about the Vets who were wounded and maimed 40 years ago as every administration since then has done.I agree the Vet's today shouldn't have to have that happen to them and as long as the VA is not important to liberals or conservatives it's going to stay the same. And by the way I am not a republican or conservative, nor am I democrat or liberal, just a plain independent. I also don't watch fox news(usually CBS sometimes ABC)I've never seen Beck or Hannity they could pass me on the street and I wouldn't know who they were. As for Limbaugh, I'm working when he's on so there is no way I could listen to him, even if I wanted to.

God bless our American seniors! They do expect the government to keep their Medicare promise for our elder Americans. That's right, so it should be! The point is Medicare is subsidized almost 3 to 1 by the American taxpayer. Seniors, on average paid in $65000 to Medicare and receive $176000 in Medicare benefits, on average. Medicare is worth fighting for. Where else can a person get an almost 300% return on investment? Not my bank, I'll tell you that. God bless our seniors, every one, except for a few folks on this blog.

Those seniors are the same people who marched with Dr King in the 70"s, protested Vietnam, and supported LBJ on welfare. But now, after paying medicare taxes for 40 years this administration wants to restrict our benefits. The taxpayer OWES those benefits to seniors because they were forced to pay "premiums" for 40 years without receiving benefits. All the while, the politicians were raiding the money for pet projects. We are fighting for what we were promised and to stop further take over by a government who cant keep promises.

What benefits are going to be restricted?

The only "restrictions" I heard about were from Fox News, and we all know what liars they are.

Do you have a link to prove your incorrect claim?

Actually, I think Medicare seniors are actually receiving a 270% return on their Medicare investment. 270% equals $65000 in Medicare paid by the average retiree...and $176000 return in Medicare benefits for their $65000 investment. The average Medicare senior is recognizing a 270% return on their taxes paid to Medicare during their working lives. That's a helluva' deal. No wonder seniors at townhall meetings are fighting to keep their socialistically subsidized medical program. The thing is that Medicare will, most likely, give better care and save money if reform passes. "Best treatment methods" will be modeled on the best hospitals in the country which give better care at a lower cost. The problem is these senior protestors are absolutely turning their backs on anybody who is unemployed, un or underinsured, those with pre-existing conditions, those dumped by their insurance companies, those going broke or bankrupt, the younger folks who want reform overwhelmingly, and any and all others American citizens who can't get medical care.

Medicare seniors at townhalls are fighting for their socialistically subsidized Medicare program which is giving these seniors an almost 300% return on their Medicare investment. These Republican seniors make up the majority of townhall protestors and also voted against President Obama in the general election. The American taxpayer is paying for the majority of Medicare benefits for American seniors. Reform would institute "best treatment methods" in Medicare which would result in better healthcare for Medicare recipients and also save the American taxpayer some money. Also, remember when seniors speak so strongly about Americans standing on their own two feet and paying their own way that these seniors medical care is being paid for primarily by the American taxpayer.

"As Figure 1 shows, even with the large prototypical package, the unemployment rate in 2010Q4 is predicted to be approximately 7.0%, which is well below the approximately 8.8% that would result in the absence of the plan."

Correct!!

You found it!!

I'm so proud of you!! (And here I thought you couldn't learn anything!!)

Now can you tell me how it was changed from "the unemployment rate in 2010Q4 is predicted to be....", to "Obama PROMISED that the unemployment rate wouldn't go over 8%"?

Last I checked, a PREDICTION or an ESTIMATE, is quite a bit different from a STATED PROMISE. I might be wrong. What do you think?

"First, the likely scale of employment loss is extremely large. The U.S. economy has already lost nearly 2.6 million jobs since the business cycle peak in December 2007. In the absence of stimulus, the economy could lose another 3 to 4 million more. Thus, we are working to counter a potential job loss of at least 5 million. As Figure 1 shows, even with the large prototypical package, the unemployment rate in 2010Q4 is predicted to be approximately 7.0%, which is well below the approximately 8.8% that would result in the absence of the plan."

They don't hate America hungry1968-16. They hate somebody who promised unemployment wouldn't go over 8% and in just a few months it is 9.7%. They hate somebody that said he could do the Public Option without a tax increase and now can't come up with any plan to pay for it without a tax increase. They hate somebody who campaigned on getting America out of the war in Iraq and now says that even after August 2010 there will still by 50,000 in Iraq and ever increasing in Afghanistan. They hate somebody that spoke of Bush's debt for our children and has increased the national debt more each month than any in history and now we see that national debt will double under Obama and that is without the Health Care Bill.

America hates failure and that is all we are seeing.

All the lies that you spew, don't do ANYTHING to give you credibility. Do you realize that?

He didn't "promise" that unemployment wouldn't go over 8%. I defy you to post that link. (I'm AMAZED how an estimate from a report, becomes a "stated promise" to you Fox News lemmings, just because an out of touch talking head said it's true.)

Where is the "tax increase" that you're speaking of? YOU are the only person calling for it.

Obama NEVER said that we were going to completely withdraw from Iraq. He said FROM THE BEGINNING that we would have some troops there long term, just not in a combat role.

And you can cry all you want about the deficit, but $350 BILLION of it is from Bush's TARP bank giveaway, and another $260 BILLION is for the continuing wars -- one that should have never been started, and the other should never have been forgotten / ignored. Funny too how you keep claiming how the deficit is exploding, all while MOST of the stimulus money hasn't even went out yet.

Would you like to post links to prove any of your lies, or are you going to do like jsd330, and just expect me to believe it like you do, because Fox News made it up, and you believe EVERYTHING they fabricate?
