(CBS)  Have you ever wondered what your fragrance says about you? Your fragrance can leave an subtle message with others, so how can you manage what impression you're making?

Style and beauty expert Jenn Falik, came on "The Early Show" Monday, with some tips on how you can make the impression you want with tips on how find a signature scent that smells right just for you.

But why is your scent so important?

Falik said your olfactory sense is directly related to the part of your brain that deals with emotions. Fear, anxiety, depression, anger, and joy, she said, all emanate from this region of the brain.

"Smells can and do evoke strong emotional memories and events," she said. "The smell of suntan lotion almost always brings you back to memories of the summer or a great vacation. Wearing a fragrance that expresses your individuality will inevitably create a lasting impression."

Scent can also alter your mood, Falik said.

"The whole premise behind aromatherapy is to use scents to alter your mood," she said.

Lavender and vanilla, she said, are stress relievers, while citrus is an energizer, and musk creates a sensual mood.

And early fall is a good time, according to Falik, to buy a new fragrance. Why?

Fall is peak time for fragrance launches, she said, and it tends to be the time when we all start looking for a new scent to set the tone for the season.

Falik said, "We are updating our look for a fresh start, so updating our fragrance is a natural extension of creating who we want to 'be' come September."

However, the prospect of braving department stores and navigating through a sea of "spritzers" isn't an attractive idea for some people. What are some alternatives?

For great deals, Falik suggested FragranceNet.com, a leading online retailer of discounted genuine brand name fragrances.

She said, "(They) can help you decode your signature scent and provide viewers with the best fragrances to attract a mate, ace an interview and more."

Falik explained four categories of fragrances and offered her suggestions for each type on "The Early Show":
