Feds: Spike in Female DUIs "Disturbing"

(CBS)  There is an increasing trend among women driving under the influence of alcohol, according to a new study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and data from the FBI.

Statistics from the FBI show that arrests for women driving under the influence increased by nearly 30 percent (28.8 percent) over the 10-year period from 1998 to 2007. Over that same decade, DUI arrests for men decreased by 7.5 percent, although the total number of men arrested during the period outstripped women by about four to one.

"Impaired driving is an issue that cuts across all segments of society and, sadly, the number of arrests of women driving under the influence is on the rise," said Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. "This is clearly a very disturbing trend."

The NHTSA study confirmed the FBI statistics showing that impaired driving by women is becoming a national safety issue, according to a statement by the Department of Transportation. The NHTSA analysis shows the number of impaired women drivers involved in fatal crashes increased in 10 states, and remained flat in five states - despite an overall decline of 9 percent in all drunk driver crashes in 2008 from 2007.

On Wednesday, LaHood kicked off a nationwide anti-drunk driving campaign that will continue through the Labor Day holiday weekend. The annual crackdown is intended to reduce the tragic toll caused by impaired drivers, nearly 12,000 fatalities in 2008.

I don't know how often women give out sexual favors to get out of traffic violations, nor do I know anything about women wanting to not work and just be a leech their whole life.

Instead, I am very interested in hearing how many men vs women drive, what are the actual stats out of how many women drive vs how many of them are being arrested for DUIs. Every time I get on the road I hardly ever see male drivers, almost all women drivers which I feel reflects something more in the population demographics rather than how many of them are drunk while driving.

Here is the bottom line on what is driving women to drink more. Most women feel they are entitled to a marital Free Lunch Program. The number of women expecting a Free Lunch Program is much higher than the number of men who have the capacity to provide a Free Lunch Program. And of those men who are capable of handing over the Gravy Train, there is now a much smaller percentage of them who are WILLING to cough up the free Gravy Train. Therefore, there are now far more women who must support themselves. For a growing number of self-entitled women, the strain is getting to be too much to bear.

MorganBarber44,

You are correct AND another thing to consider is the fact that many women are so in love with their cell phones and People magazines that they don't look up to see what's coming next and have no idea about what is really going on in this world...so they get upset when they don't appear on TV or become famous because they think that it just happens without any effort...They just prefer to get married, then divorced and earn their pay that way...

Noooooooooo, it's just that women are just not getting away with it anymore.

Soon they'll say there is a spike in female crimes and it will again just be that they aren't getting off so easy anymore.

it's more than a 10-1 ratio of men-vs-women in jail but it's more like 7-1 on actually committing crimes.

it's a fact that women have always gotten off very easy when committing crimes. (just say it was your BF's and you'll go free)

Actually, whether women were getting off easy is still a matter of opinion. This new data may simply demonstrate a new movement underway among women. They may no longer be willing to risk unwanted pregnancies in order to avoid prosecution when stopped by America's highway patrol troopers. Just to be fair, a decrease in the arrests of men may reflect something of a "preference" reversal.
