Unlikely Foods Pack Antioxidant Punch

Vegetables are known to be a great source of antioxidants, but new research suggests some foods you might not think of are packed with disease-fighting antioxidants, such as whole-grain cereals and snacks, such as popcorn.

Antioxidants reduce inflammation and stress on cells to help prevent or slow the process of cellular aging, CBS News medical correspondent Dr. Jennifer Ashton explained on "The Early Show" Wednesday.

Ashton said, "Antioxidants were known to be in fruits and vegetables, green tea and red wine, but this is the first time researchers have measured the antioxidant content in these foods, finding they're full of them."

The University of Scranton (Pa.) study by Joe Vinson, a professor of chemistry, found almost all whole-grain breakfast cereals and many common, grain-based snacks contain substantial amounts of polyphenols, a form of antioxidants that is thought to have major health benefits. Ashton said antioxidants are linked to benefits for many health issues, from heart disease to cancer.

Ashton explained some cereals with raisins, in addition to the whole-grain content, were the highest in antioxidants. The researchers also found that cereals with added cinnamon or cocoa also had high rates of antioxidants due to the polyphenols in cinnamon and cocoa.

Ashton added, "You want to make sure that you choose cereals that don't have a lot of extra sugar, and artificial ingredients that will counteract the good of the antioxidants."

As for snacks, popcorn had the highest antioxidants, followed by whole grain crackers.

Ashton said popcorn -- as long as it's not loaded with butter -- is a good source, Ashton said.

But can these foods and snacks replace fruits and vegetables?

Ashton said "no," adding the key is a balanced, well-rounded diet.

"Though this research found that whole grain products have comparable antioxidants per gram to fruits and veggies, they are often different kinds and you should eat a wide variety of healthy foods," Ashton told CBS News. "Sorry, you still need to eat your vegetables."

Quoting a ten year old Swedish study is like saying the Earth is flat, because the Catholic Church said it was so in 1489 (Not in the Thomas Friedman sense). In science today, ten years is a thousand. Many studies have come out in the years since and said the opposite. Anti-oxidants fight not just cancer but many other problems, including heart disease and inflammation. Must be why my CRP is so low. Hurray for popcorn.

Popcorn destroys your teeth and gums.

I tried drinking green tea once, but it bothered my stomach. I don't know if it was the caffeine, or the acid that's in it. (I don't drink tea or coffee.)

What you eat and drink is your own choice, but we could reduce health care costs with a healthier population. No sense giving all our dollars to doctors, hospitals, drug companies and insurance companies. Think of all the well being those dollars could provide if used wisely instead of feeding the greed of a few.

I drink green tea all the time and eat whole grain cereals every day.
I also eat popcorn once in a while and eat veggies and drink orange juice so I guess I am covered on this issue.
Doctor? Haven't been to a doctor since I was a teenager (over 20 years ) and I haven't been sick in over 10 years (one cold 11 years ago ).
Green tea is good for you and since I started drinking it I have never felt better.
I drink and eat those foods because I like them not for health benefits.

Functional foods have caught the attention of people in the U.S. Foods as drugs have been used through out the age of humans. Nature has provided us with what we need and drug companies want to put it in a pill and make billions of dollars. Many of the drugs have come from plants and get patented for a licensed monopoly. What a country....

Unfortunately, the value of antioxidants in preventing cancer has been largely discredited by a large Swedish study approximately ten years ago. On the other hand, if it makes you feel like you're doing something proactive, then take them.
