Baltimore PD to Cite Phelps for License

(AP)  Baltimore police say they'll cite Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps for driving without a license and failure to establish residency in Maryland state.

Phelps was in a car accident late Thursday, but police say it wasn't his fault. They do say he presented them with an expired Michigan driver's license afterward.

Phelps wasn't fined but will have to appear in court.

Baltimore Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi says the driver of the other car, Amanda Virkus, will be cited for failure to obey a red light and causing an accident. Those citations carry a maximum penalty of a $180 fine and three points on a driver's license.

Phelps lived in Michigan between the 2004 and 2008 Olympics. He moved back last year to his native Maryland.

The big news media outlets cannot report on anything of value to the American people. This story on Michael Phelps is one of them.

This story is another example in a long list of stories of why the quality of American journalism is in serious decline.

Phelps is a very accomplished individual, but I think, in this case, he needs to address the lack of a current license in the state in which he resides, as per the law. He is certainly never been the only one to be confronted by this type of issue.

However, the news media are being ridiculous when they make this a "story". I wonder if they know how absurd they look reporting on such events?

I agree!!!! The media loves stuff that feeds the gossip pages. Not one of them can swim two laps with him and be on the same lap as he, at the finish. So since they can't beat him there they will beat him to death in the press. The JERKS. He would have paid his fine and gone on with his life like every other Joe in this country but the MSM couldn't resist a no-story that hurts someone. (Nevermind Phelps, I will pay it for you) Get with the CBSnews.com IT staff, I will give them permission for you (only) to send me the bill or contact me

Phelps is such an adolescent that he can"t manage to maintain a current driver's license?
