Militias Regrouping in U.S., Report Finds

(CBS/AP)  Militia groups with gripes against the government are regrouping across the country and could grow rapidly, according to an organization that tracks such trends.

The stress of a poor economy and a liberal administration led by a black president are among the causes for the recent rise, the report from the Southern Poverty Law Center says. Conspiracy theories about a secret Mexican plan to reclaim the Southwest are also growing amid the public debate about illegal immigration.

Bart McEntire, a special agent with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, told SPLC researchers that this is the most growth he's seen in more than a decade.

"All it's lacking is a spark," McEntire said in the report.

It's reminiscent of what was seen in the 1990s - right-wing militias, people ideologically against paying taxes and so-called "sovereign citizens" are popping up in large numbers, according to the report to be released Wednesday. The SPLC is a nonprofit civil rights group that, among other activities, investigates hate groups.

Now law enforcement authorities are urging the public to be vigilant, reports CBS News correspondent Bob Orr.

"If you have an individual who is consistently talking about taking up arms against innocents, against government, that should be a clear red flag for people to take action," said CBS News homeland security analyst Paul Kurtz.

Last October, someone from the Ohio Militia posted a recruiting video on YouTube, billed as a "wake-up call" for America. It's been viewed more than 60,000 times.

"Things are bad, things are real bad, and it's going to be a lot worse," said the man on the video, who did not give his name. "Our country is in peril."

The man is holding an AR-15 semiautomatic rifle, and he encourages viewers to buy one.

While anti-government sentiment has been on the rise over the last two years, there aren't as many threats and violent acts at this point as there were in the 1990s, according to the report. That movement bore the likes of Timothy McVeigh, who in 1995 blew up a federal building in Oklahoma City and killed 168 people.

But McEntire fears it's only a matter of time.

These militias are concentrated in the Midwest, Pacific Northwest and the Deep South, according to Mark Potok, an SPLC staff director who co-wrote the report. Recruiting videos and other outreach on the Internet are on the rise, he said, and researchers from his center found at least 50 new groups in the last few months.

The rise also coincides with skyrocketing gun and ammunition sales, reports Orr.

The militia movement of the 1990s gained traction with growing concerns about gun control, environmental laws and anything perceived as liberal government meddling.

The spark for that movement came in 1992 with an FBI standoff with white separatist Randall Weaver at Ruby Ridge, Idaho. Weaver's wife and son were killed by an FBI sniper. And in 1993, a 52-day standoff between federal agents and the Branch Davidian cult in Waco, Texas, resulted in nearly 80 deaths. These events rallied more people who became convinced that the government would murder its own citizens to promote its liberal agenda.

Now officials are seeing a new generation of activists, according to the report. The law center spotlights Edward Koernke, a Michigan man who hosts an Internet radio show about militias. His father, Mark, was a major figure in the 1990s militia movement and served six years in prison for charges including assaulting police.

Last year, officials warned about an increase in activity from militias in a five-year threat projection by the Homeland Security Department.

"White supremacists and militias are more violent and thus more likely to conduct mass-casualty attacks on the scale of the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing," the threat projection said.

A series of domestic terrorism incidents over the past year have not been directly tied to organized militias, but the rhetoric behind some of the crimes are similar with that of the militia movement. For instance, the man charged with the April killings of three Pittsburgh police officers posted some of his views online. Richard Andrew Poplawski wrote that U.S. troops could be used against American citizens, and he thinks a gun ban could be coming.

Almost two months later an anti-abortion rights protestor gunned down a Wichita doctor in a church, reports Orr.

The FBI's assistant director for counterterrorism, Michael Heimbach, said that law enforcement officials need to identify people who go beyond hateful rhetoric and decide to commit violent acts and crimes. Heimbach said one of the bigger challenges is identifying the lone-wolf offenders.

One alleged example of a lone-wolf offender is the 88-year-old man charged in the June shooting death of a guard at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington.

Sometimes it is the highest act of patriotism to take up arms against your government. My Family has been involved in taking up arms against the federal government three times in the last 120 years. It was always to protect other people and their property. It never got our family a single thing. All three times right won out. And I guess you wonder why this wasn't in the history book beside the other bull you learned? Because the people don't write history. They were not a militia, just neighbors running to a neighbors aid. In history the militia have usually been the good guys. You should be more afraid of the Southern Poverty Law Center than any Militia.

Ok, normally I don't comment on these articles..I just ignore them, but I just can't take it any more! People..READ YOUR HISTORY BOOKS!! Militias are the good guys, Timothy was NEVER in a militia..he went to ONE metting and THEY KICKED HIM OUT! As for Militias being hate groups..or rascists, guess what..they are not valid for militia status due to the fact that real militia groups are inherently open to all comers..just so long as you're a LEGAL citizen of these United States, you join a group..you leave your ego, political veiws and such at the door. However the problem is that the media spouts off their veiws..and everyone agrees with them..because the media's NEVER WRONG! I have NEVER met a Militia group that's rascist towards any color or idea. As for being anti-gov..that's a lie..we like the idea of how it SHOULD be ran..if it was going right..we wouldn't be ticked off..hell..we wouldn't care if the Pres was purple..but guess what..they don't CARE ABOUT US! Hey..we might be that so called *1%* Not the first time that We the People were outnumbered like that..first revolution..not everyone wanted to fight..but we did and won. Reading these comments almost makes me not want to fight for this country..but when it comes..I will..because I live this country..even if it's populated by zombies who obeys their masters. Also be careful who you call names..alot of these militia folks are Military vets that has alot of fight left in them.

That's my rant..Good luck America..we NEED IT!

More Obama administration lies to scare the sheeple??

Remember that Department of Homeland Security (DHS) "report" warning of the danger of domestic terrorist attacks by right-wing extremists? With only a few exceptions, major mainstream media outlets uncritically repeated the report's assertions, which were allegedly based on credible intelligence from official sources.

It was left to a conservative non-profit, Americans for Limited Government (ALG), to file a Freedom of Information Act request for the documentation used by DHS to prepare the report. And guess what ALG found? Instead of intelligence reports, DHS used unverified allegations and speculations it found on the internet.

DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano's researchers liked one particularly apocalyptic web site so much that they cited it 11 times in their report. This site - called "What It Means" - often warns that the world is about to end, as with this recent headline: "Deaith Star Pandemic of 2009-2012: End of Age Begins."

So McVeigh was an unverified threat? Von Brunn is a figment of Napolitano's imagination? David Duke doesn't exist? The KKK really is a "benevolent" organization?
So what if DHS used "unverified allegations and speculations it found on the internet." I don't care if they got their information from Dilbert comic strips, the observational evidence of the right's danger to American values and institutions is undisputed. If anything, Nappo understated the threat.
I did a little research on ALG and they aren't above using questionable sources, spin doctoring and dissemenating outright lies as gospel truth. I take anything they say with as much salt as you appear to with DHS.

Things the "militias" should take very careful note of:

The Obamanator won this election by a small but significant margin. In the racist cauldron that is America today, it is noteworthy that a Black man was even considered for nomination, let alone selected as the Democratic contender and even less alone elected president. That this happened has far more to do with the shambles Bush/Cheney made of this country than any qualifications Mr. Obama could bring to the table or any moderation of a White dominated society that is still ambivalent about Black wishes to join it.

There are millions of us, far FAR more than the numbers of angry right-wing agitators, whose livelihoods - even our lives themselves - depend on Obama's success. We, or at least I, feel that these para-militaries, weekend warriors, militia wannabees and other fringe agitators who are committed to his failure present a clear and present danger. A lot of us are also armed and many have had military training as well. Even I spent some time in the Coast Guard before being thrown out due to medical issues.
I know how to use a rifle and can learn how to use a handgun....

I don't normally talk like this - and don't like to - but while the teabaggers, Brownshirts, "militias" and other right wing frass consider Obama's success at healtcare reform and other social projects a threat to their liberties - however that may be defined; I consider their success at thwarting him through violence and imtimidation a threat to my LIFE. Trust me here folks, because this is important....I am NOT the only one. And to those who are militia members or who support violence and disruption to achieve what they could not accomplish at the ballot box last November, consider....There are a lot more of "us" than there are of "them".

To those who are considering violent overthrow of our institutions as the best or only alternative to resolve your issues...Don't. There's no need to go there. And there are plenty of us who will fight back.

Don't like the Health Care proposal? Fine. Read the dam' thing and point out what needs revision. Complain to your senator or representitive. Write to your governor. Even show up at Town Hall meetings and voice your opinions. But do not disrupt those who are genuinely seeking information. Do not use verbal or physical violence. Do not make vague threats of revolution. And especially do not use the Health Care initiative as the linchpin to return America to the dark ages of the Bush Administration.

Bart McEntire spoke of "a spark". While I agree with a previous poster that a lot of the noise generated by the right wing loose screws is just that, I also remember McVeigh. And von Brunn. If such a spark ignites and the neo-cranks do go on their rampage, that violence WILL be answered in kind....Regardless of how much I may disapprove.

No one wants a civil war. We went through one a century and a half ago and it had killed more Americans than any conflict we've been in since. A peaceful resolution to such concerns as voiced over healthcare reform as well as other initiatives is preferrable to violence. It is far preferrable to igniting a firestorm that could destroy this nation.

The fact remains that state militias are an intragal part to not only our national constitution, but our state constitutions as well. The militia are our police force, National Guard, and "able bodies citizens.."
My state constitution states: The militia of this state shall consist of all able-bodied male citizens between the ages of eighteen and forty-five, except such as are exempt by laws of the United States or
of this state. The organized militia shall be called the "national guard of New Mexico," of which the governor shall be the commander
in chief.

Articles like this one, who group militias with hate groups (as if they are one in the same), has directly distorted the truth about who the militias really are and has turned them into groups that people fear. Why? Why fear your neighbors, your family? Because CBS news told you to? Is there one single article anyone can find where a militia group was responsible for some horrible tragady?

Fear the actual hate groups, fear the lone wolfs, but do not fear the militia. For in a time of great need, it may be us that you depend on.

Taking a page out of Baby Bush's play book, this BS is Obama's WMDs and should be exposed for what it really is.

After reading all of these comments I am amazed at what some people actually believe. Sure there are alot of militia running around in the woods with the beer can in one hand and a gun in the other. But there are also alot out there who are serious and training properly. One of my "friends" is retired Army Ranger. No beer gut,no rebel flags,no racist attitude. He believes in the USA and everyone in it no matter the color or religion. He believes it is his duty to be prepared to defend this country at ALL times-thats what the militia is for. To all you fearmongering nay'sayers out there-if another war was to break out like say-WW3?-you would be grateful there were so many patriots out there to defend your right to live. Beer guts or not.

It is amazing that anyone, especially CBS or a not-for-profit legal group would investigate the activities of ordinary citizens. Just a few years ago, many were complaining that King George was infringing on our liberties. Now King Barry is the decider and many are saying the same thing. Surely the truth lies somewhere in the middle. More amazing is that this not-for-profit group that is supposedly looking out for "our" civil liberties seems to think that TALK about taking up arms against the U.S. government is too radical and even criminal. Talk is just that until there is an overt action. Our founding fathers knew the best way to keep the government in line with the will of the people was to arm the people against tyrants and dictators. All the votes in the U.S. mean nothing if they are not counted...

"Talk is just that until there is an overt action."

And keeping an eye on someone is just that, too, which is what the SPLC and ATF are doing. No one has denied these people the right to talk.

Those who live their lives in a dream will wake up one day to find that nothing in their life is real.

Militias have a way to create their own wishful reality.
