250 Inmates Injured in Prison Riot

(AP)  More than three dozen inmates were released from hospitals Sunday after being involved in a racially motivated riot that badly damaged a Southern California prison and forced the lockdown of nine others.

The riot that erupted Saturday night sent 55 prisoners to the hospital and injured more than 250 inmates in all, officials said. Thirty-eight inmates were treated and were expected to return to the California Institution for Men in Chino, east of Los Angeles, by late Sunday, said Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation spokesman George Kostyrko.

Most of the injuries were considered minor to moderate, including stab wounds and slashes. One inmate suffered a serious head injury, Kostyrko said. However, none of the injuries were considered life-threatening.

No staff members were injured in the disturbance, the largest since December 2006.

As many as 80 officers responded to the riot, which involved some 1,300 inmates in seven dormitory-style barracks. A fire that ignited during the chaos caused significant damage to one of the buildings, prison spokesman Lt. Mark Hargrove said. Prison officials couldn't say how the fire started.

Authorities believe the riot was prompted by tensions between black and Hispanic prisoners.

"It appears we had some southern Hispanic gang members targeting African Americans," Kostyrko said.

Officers used pepper spray, wielded batons and shot foam projectiles to remove inmates who had barricaded themselves inside the medium-security facility during the four-hour uprising. Police officers and firefighters also were called to help subdue the inmates. Eleven hours later, prison officials had cleared out the facility of disruptive inmates.

The outbreak occurred at a reception center that accepts new inmates and parole offenders being processed to be housed at the prison and sent to other facilities in the state, officials said.

Prison staff became aware of a plan to carry out a riot Thursday night, Hargrove told the Riverside Press-Enterprise. The prison was placed on a modified lockdown, which included feeding inmates in their cells and restricting movement around the property. That lockdown continued until Saturday when the riot began.

Still, the inmates were able to inflict serious damage to the facility and one another. Most of the barracks are currently uninhabitable, and inmates have been relocated to other parts of the prison.

Curt Hagman, a state assemblyman for the district that includes Chino, believes the riot was a "coordinated attack."

"They all knew what they were going to do in starting a big brawl," Hagman told the Press-Enterprise. He added that inmates used improvised weapons and broken glass to stab each other.

The prison has about 5,900 inmates; it was designed to hold 3,160.

All 10 prisons in Southern California were put on lockdown as a precaution and visitations have been suspended because of the melee, officials said.

Man is convicted of crime. Man is sentenced to 20 years. Man is taken to jail. Cell door is opened. Man is put in cell. Cell door is closed. 20 years later cell door is opened. Man is let out. When did the riot occur?

Yes,jetranger7 I am a 2 x Vietnam Vet and I can tell as other Vietnam Vets can that some of these criminals were converted and were great warriors. I am not saying that prison ahould not be hard. I am saying we need a way of stopping young men and women from become criminals. This starts from the parent and the school working together to help our kids turn from crime and embrace eduaction. Teaching to use their skills for good not bad. You don't have to have a brain to fire a gun, but a lot of these guys running these gangs are not dumb. Some could probable be CEO's of top 500 companies. take a moment to read this article; http://mondediplo.com/1998/07/14prison . 1975 prison population 380,000. Now 5.4 million....what happen? After you read the Article Imprisoning the American poor", thens lets finish this discussion. I am trying to make you and anyone else that is reading that the problem can't be solved with just chain gangs. BOSSCASH77

Sorry Boss Cash - if your NOT pleased with what I have to say, but I'll stick to my Guns !! Your living in an Era long ago, when things were different and the amount of Drugs coming into the US were not what they are today, and the money to be made, Today these punks are ruthless, and not all that are here are US citizens, many are foreigners, and a lot of that money made from drug sales gets funneled back to terroists groups, back when you are talking about, we didn't have going on then what we do today, as far as the gang activity, You can't continue to be nice to these types of degenerates and expect them to just comply because you show compassion,, meanwhile were wasting millions of dollars on these degenerates who treat our courts and prision system as a joke, its a game to them, they go in and come back out and go back in within just a few months after being out for more serious crimes ! We've all seen this argument before years ago about reabilting these criminals, it'll never happen, and back when you were talking about, this country had jobs to offer, now all our decent jobs are sitting in MEXICO and CHINA, so violent Crime is up, and serving in todays Military or starting up the DRAFT is NOT the answer, your just a Pawn for the Rich to use you to play their games and profit from it, as we've all read how the US Military and the VA's across this country have deserted those who've served,,fighting for this country- The military doesn't need these types of Degenerates causing problems in the platoons, as we've seen lately in many IRAQ situtions, and read about. You committ a serious Crime- such as car jacking- Rape - Drive by Shootings, Selling large quanties of drugs, Money laundering, etc, you need to be taught a lesson, NOT givin an Air conditioned Prision Cell a TV and all kinds of Visitation privilages and books and magazines to read, and all kinds of FREE time to loaf and do as you please such as getting tattoos etc,, You need to work, and become so tired you can't stand- they could help keep the prisions up and the road ways clear of weeds, and dig trenches with a shovel for better water drainage Tax Payers Dollar, with to much free time in prision figuring out how to imtimidate other inmates and guards.. with their candy ass scare tactics,, make em work Hard Labor- 18 hours a day, put that frustration into Labor something usefull, Why should the Tax payers have to foot the bill for their lazyness and don't give a damn attitude !!! CHAIN GANGS were a great deterent back in the day,, but too many Special Interest Groups who were near sited thought we could be soft on criminals and offer them milk and cookies and evertything would be just peachy- well it isn't working and never has- our prision system has become a joke, and these guys get to work out, at a gym, watch TV, read books, play games, go to school,,, and if you disagree with what I have to say - TOUGH- go tell it to the parents of the daughters they murdered, or the wife of the husbands they killed, or the mother of the child they shot dead in a drive by shooting--- tell your philosophy to them see if they'll buy it !

This is for jetranger7. I listen to your words and I ask myself what USA do you live in. There is something wrong with our prison system. We keep spending tax payers money to build more prisons verses trying to spend the same money to find a way to keep people out of prison. Why does a person decide to sell drugs rather then to go to school to learn to become a pharmacist or Rob a bank in stead of becoming a banker? This is the questions we need answers to. Every child is born innocent of bad decisons and wrong doings. What happened to them to cause them to chose crime over college. Food for thought: one big mistake our government made was stopping the draft. If you check your statistics you will find out that during the draft period. There were less gangs and the prison population was down. Why? Because between the ages of 18 and 25 young men were drafted to serve their country. Now listen! They got out of Los Angeles or New York, were stationed in another part of the US or overseas. They got to see other cultures and live in other parts of the USA. Most never went back to their city to live. They grew with no peer pressure,no Gangs. Get my point. Man we are all born winners. Sometimes we need a little help to bring the winner out of us. This one is for you
jetranger7. When you speak negative, you are sending negative vibes into the world. When you speak positive, you send positive vibes into the world. What I am trying to say is if you really want change than become a part of the solution not the problem.....BOSSCASH77

I'd love to be the Warden of a Federal Prision,, remember the movie with Paul Newman, where he was on a "CHAIN GANG",,you can bet, they will tow the line with me or else - I personally don't give a flyin rats ass what any Special Interest Group thinks, I'd have all my inmates in a "Chain Gang", up everyday at 5:00am, and ready to work by 6:00am,, till Dark at 9:00Pm, they'd get 30 minutes for dinner and 30 minutes for a shower and its Lights Out get ready for tomorrow- Repeat the process everyday 7 days a week !! If any of you try to escape or cause a fight with another inmate - My Deputies will Fire 1 Warning Shot Only, to Stop and then its Shoot to Kill - NO Exceptions- No Excuses - No Rhetoric ! If this type of punishment doesn't please You while your in here, than maybe you'll think about that before you Join a stupid gang or committ a serious crime like car jacking or stealing a car or armed robbery or even murder and rape !! Anybody caught raping another inmate shall be givin 5 full years in Solitary Confinement, with NO windows - No TV or Radio, NO books or magazines, NO Mail and No visitations from family members or friends and you will NOT be allowed out of your Solitary Confinement for 5 full years, after you've been medically castrated ! Don't like it- Tough ! Any Inmates caught giving Tattoos will be subject to arrest and forfeit all privilages of seeing any family members for 24 months and immediately sentenced to solitary confinement ! All other will work on the "Chain Gang", wearing a Black and White Striped Uniform with Big large letters on the Back for your Crime - if yoyur a Rapist - you'll wear that on your back, if your a child molester then you'll wear that on your back, if your a murder - you'll wear that word on your back, and if Your a Gang Member I have something really Special for you Degenerates - you'll wear the words "Mickey Mouse Club" on your back !!!! Glad everybody understnds I don't play games - NOW I want everybody up at 5:00am sharp, dressed and ready to go with youir work tools by 6am and Chained together by 6:15am,, Failure to do so will result in you being marched into a box car and the Gas turned on - Have a good Day !

In Japan, the prisoners are given BARE CELL, and are made to sit upright ALL day long on a hard table. That's it. If they don't they get physical punishment and no food.
I have seen these shows on MSNBC. What a tough job the guards have, as the prisoners "have their rights" and seem to have all sorts of potential weapons, inter communication, and gangs, animal behaviours, where does it say that they can have anything in their cells ? allowed. What the heck we need here is the chain gang or the japan approach. Not what we have now.

Too much Free time on their Hands is the problem,, and the Tax Payers are paying for it needlessly,, 1st thing I'd do especially for those with Violent Behavior or gang activity - is bring back the "CHAIN-GANGS" - Chain them all together and shackle their ankles together with one another and put them to work out in or around the prision compound with weed whips, in the heat and cold,, 18 to 20 hours a day for their entire sentence, or making little rocks out of big rocks 18 hours a day,,, this will wear them down and make them to tired and give the low lifes something else to think about, its called sleep and food, and get ready for work tomorrow again - Repeat the process all over again,,, and if you don't like it in here than Quit doing crimes and joining stupid ignorant gangs and you won't have to be on the "CHAIN-GANG" - other wise if your going to be in a Gang and committ crimes,, you'll be on the "CHAIN-GANG" under heavily Armed supervision with orders to Shoot to Kill if need be - end of Discussion - NOT Debateable !!! Bring back the "CHAIN GANGS" HARD LABOR for these degenerate prisioners Immediately - NO-MORE work outs or watching TV's Hard Labor- 7 days a week,, 18 hours a day !!!!! Californians should demand it , before you end up with a whole prision escaping into your communitys and raping and murding your daughters and wives,,, CHAIN GANGS & HARD LABOR is whats needed to wear them down and keep them tired !!!!

I work in a prison. Part of the problem are people thinking all inmates in prison are degenerates. The majority of men and women in prison are people who made some bad choices. I know no one wants to hear this but the answer may be education and habilitation. NOT rehabilitation. The majority of these people have never been taught the right way to live. Chain gangs may be a good solution. It will certainly occupy them and tire them out. There is not enough to do in prison and no money to provide anything. I have been in this profession for a long time and very few get out and rape and murder your daughters. And the ones that do will anyway. It just too bad we cant give them a test to see if they will re offend.
Its too bad we dont spend all the money we are spending on prisons trying to find a way to keep these people out out prison.
