Salmonella Fear Sparks Massive Beef Recall

(AP)  A Fresno-based beef company is recalling hundreds of thousands of ground beef products because of concerns it may be linked to an outbreak of salmonella.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service says Beef Packers Inc. is recalling 825,769 pounds of ground beef produced between June 5, 2009 through June 23.

The recall announced Thursday says the beef products bear the establishment number "EST. 31913" printed on case code labels.

The beef was distributed to retail distribution centers in Arizona, California, Colorado and Utah.

The USDA says because the beef was repackaged under different retail names, consumers should check with the store they bought beef from to determine if they've purchased any recalled beef.

I thought this story might be about recalling all the beef made for McDonald's over the last two weeks, because of that woman who fell into the processing machine and was there for a couple of days without being noticed.

Another damned food recall a month and a half late.
I've already been sick just about that time too...

Private industry cannot be trusted to do the right thing, not in health care, food production, supporting troops . . . The wingnuts insist that markets will take care of every problem. We have to have regulatory agencies, inspectors, and enforceable laws. We can be a civilzed country or become China. It costs money. Want clean food? You gotta pay, because the industry has never minded the store and will not do it. Read Sinclair Lewis.

Raise what you eat and eat what you raise.

Well, they've busted the unions out of the meatpacking industry and replaced the workers with minimum wage illegal immigrants.. A bit of feces in your burger is just one of the unintended consequences.

Bad idea, salmonella in chicken is almost expected, and a certain % allowable. The smart thing to do is learn how to properly store, handle, and prepare (cook) meats to lessen the chance of becoming sick.
