Jobless Grad Sues NYC College

(AP)  A New York City woman who says she can't find a job is suing the college where she earned a bachelor's degree.

Trina Thompson filed a lawsuit last week against Monroe College in Bronx Supreme Court, The New York Post reports. The 27-year-old is seeking the (Canadian) $70,000 she spent on tuition.

Thompson says she's been unable to find gainful employment since she received her information technology degree in April.

She says the Bronx school's Office of Career Advancement hasn't provided her with the leads and career advice it promises.

Monroe College spokesman Gary Axelbank says Thompson's lawsuit is completely without merit.

The college insists it helps its graduates find jobs.

I read somewhere from a blogger who is an employer. He said that he would not hire a college graduate saying he or she is be too expensive and lacks work experience. This is the same story heard all over the World these days. Yet, I believe that our NYC College graduate is very well articulate and can perform any job very well.

The problem is not the College failure to provide her with a job upon graduation. The problem is Globalization which had caused economic upheavals worldwide, especially in industrialized nations like ours. People lose their jobs or cannot find new employment anywhere, whether they just have a high school diploma or a college degree. For over a decade, companies big and small, multi-national corporations shredded jobs in the US to pursue unskilled, illiterate, but cheap labor in places like Mexico, China, and India.

I currently live in San Jose CA, and I have seen a lot of Latino illegal workers and IT Indian employees on Visas. High-tech companies in CA laid-off many American IT employees so that they could move their operations overseas or brought foreign workers to the US.

For our college graduate, I will suggest that she writes to her elected official to describe her situation and starts suing companies she has applied for job discrimination.

Has to be a lib, only one of them would think they have an entitlement that obligates everyone else to help them through life because they are too lazy to do it themselves.

Actually, she must be a conservative because she disputes the value of an education.

She paid of knowledge..that' what she got.
I graduated with a Math Sci degree back in the Bush 1 years...
It was 8 months before I got a job in my field. Until that point..I worked in factories...I didn't whine about it.

The nice part is that while I was in school..I worked..which gave me something USEFUL to put on my resume. And I graduated without college loans...so there.

If she really wants a job..the military is still hiring

Of course by suing her school she immediately dropped herself to the bottom of the pile for anyone who might hire her. Think about it, would you knowingly hire someone who you know, for a fact, will sue over almost anything? Imagine if you offer her a job, she does poorly, and gets passed up for promotion?

A college education is a complete sham! I'm $60,000 in college tuition debt and I've been out of school since 1993. I don't have a career, I have a job... one that doesn't pay very well, although, I do get by. Trying to find a job right after college was difficult. Company's wanted at least 5 years work experience; working internships, you don't get paid. Some family members who completely skipped college are earning more than I. A college degree doesn't guarantee a good paying job. It's a sham!

Did anyone else catch that the damages she seeking ar in CANADIAN DOLLARS?!?!?!?

Why is she seeking a foreign currency if she is alleged to be a NYC woman???

If she is a citizen of Canada, complain to your own country why there are no jobs available, it is not the responsibility of a USA School to find employment for you! Its called write a resume and complete applications?? The school is not going to arrange for interviews for your dumb butt! You need to do some work too!

Since you appear to be such an idiot Ms. Thompson, I will help you ...

Go to your computer, turn it on (wait for it to boot up), open an internet browser like, Internet Explorer (yeu know the funny looking blue "e" that should be on your desk top), type in www.monster.com then in the search field type "Information Technology" and the location to keep it simple type "New York City" then click the search button and BAM!!! you will see a listing of several hundred jobs in this field! Pick one and submit your resume! Oh you may need to go for an interview and answer questions, but don't let that throw you!!

To poor little Trina, GROW UP!! Just because you graduated does not mean you are guaranteed a job, you do have to make an effort to seek out a job!

maybe the college should be sued - for graduating someone like this with no common sense or concept of self responsibility. what a joke! every employer should put this person's name on the "beware - do not hire" list.

She should be repremanded for taking the court's time. But, she isn't asking as much as the lawyer that wanted millions for his pants from the dry cleaners.

I'd like to see some fresh out of school lawyer take this case and win. That way everybody would make a name for themselves.

Going to college and then being able to get a job, any job, isn't a right and certainly isn't guaranteed. How stupid was this woman to come to the conclusion that just because she has a degree automatically gets her a job in her field? Maybe she should try flipping burgers like a lot of well-educated other college graduates do to survive. Colleges offer job placement services, but again there aren't guarantees. She sounds also very dense not to be aware of the current economic situation. Hey, maybe she's losing out to other higher skilled and intelligent job seekers. Sounds to me like she's just another bottom-feeder trying to get her money the easy way and an even greater bottom-feeder slug of attorney representing her.
