Photo Essay Henry Louis Gates Jr. Accusations of racial profiling in the arrest of the Harvard professor have stirred controversy
Beck made the statement during a guest appearance Tuesday on the "Fox & Friends" morning show. He said Obama has exposed himself as a person with "a deep-seated hatred for white people or the white culture."
His remarks came during a discussion of Obama's reaction to the arrest of Harvard University scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr. Gates is black and was arrested for disorderly conduct by a white policeman over a misunderstanding about a break-in at Gates' home.
An Obama spokesman, William Burton, said the White House had no comment on Beck.
Beck's statement was challenged on the air by Fox host Brian Kilmeade, who noted that most of the people who work for the nation's first black president are white.
"I'm not saying he doesn't like white people," Beck said. "He has a problem. This guy is, I believe, a racist."
Beck wondered, during the discussion, what other president would immediately jump on the police for their actions in the case. Obama said in a news conference that he believed the police acted stupidly in the case, but later backtracked from the statement and invited Gates and the police officer, Sgt. James Crowley, to the White House for a conciliatory meeting later this week.
Bill Shine, Fox News senior vice president of programming, told the TVNewser Web site that Beck had "expressed a personal opinion which represented his own views, not those of the Fox News Channel. And as with all commentators in the cable news arena, he is given the freedom to express his opinions."
Racial controversies are hardly new to presidents. In 2005, entertainer Kanye West said during a telethon after Hurricane Katrina that President George W. Bush "doesn't care about black people."
Beck, also a radio host and best-selling author, was an immediate hit with Fox News Channel viewers, starting in January when he made the jump from HLN (formerly CNN Headline News).
Beck didn't speak about the racial comments on his own daily Fox show Tuesday.

- Obama a racist?
Well, there is his pastor who is a Black Theologist(Obama sat in his church for decades).... I suggest all research Black Theology.
There is the professor friend as well(who openly hates whites).
Obama seems to be surrounded by radical friends. Radicalists are always full of hate.
Obama is a a typical politican- lair, racist, and believes people are too stupid to demand more than the gist of his policies. The color of his skin does not make him immune to criticism of his policies, actions, and social life. This is America. I am bi-racial... and I think he is a poorly disguised racist. If I can say it- YOU CAN TOO!
He is NOT any better than the last president. A president should be free of criticisim- or we would live in Iran or Russia.
By the way- ANYONE notice Obama un-doing the Bush policies that degraded our rights to privacy and such? NO?! He is just as bad or even worse then Bush- dont lie to yourself in order to be politically correct. AND NO PARTY SHOULD TOUCH THE CONSTITUTION! Amendments to such should be much longer than some Smucks term in office. - Reply to this comment
- All of us reading this article shall someday be known as the generation that lost free speech. My God, you can't say anything today without offending someone. When did everyone get so sensitive? It is all the whining cry babies in this country that will be responsible for the fall of the United States of America. I hope your happy.

- There's a few things here. One, we supposedly have free speech. It is not about inclusion or diversity, it is about the right of any citizen to say anything they want. If people believe, then they will follow, if not they'll vote with their feet the other way. If you want your say, the other guy gets his too.
Second, I have never heard of Glenn Beck before today. I haven't had cable in 8 years and I don't think I've missed much. But I have heard of him now. And now I'm curious about the entire interview and the rest of what was said. Thanks to everyone getting fired up, you've given this guy a whole pile of free advertising. You could have just let him fade into the night and die a slow, quiet network death. But not now. You've given him wings.
Finally, I find the arguments about which way the networks lean humorous. Try reading the BBC, Reuters and other world news agencies and start finding out about what is happening in and with our country that isn't reported by ANY of them. It is truly shocking. While people argue over network political leanings and a network talking head, they're missing the real substance of what is happening in our country and the world. Time to wake up people. - Reply to this comment
- Glenn BEck has finally shown his true colors. The country as a whole is more important than party affiliation! By making comments against a young vibrant president all he stands to do is divide this country.
As least the advertising executives many of whom (are most likely republican) had the decency to stand up and not advertise in his slot.
Even they realize that this type of attack on a new PRESIDENT does not help the UNITED STATES. I used to like Glenn BECK AND thought he wAS PRETTY fair but now I know that he is not genuine. Needs to probably apologize in public to the President and maybe if the president forgives him he can gain back some of his reputation. - Reply to this comment
- I already knew Obama was a racist. Obama's own WORDS, his association with Rev Wright's church for 20 years, his own words while reading from his Dreams of my Father book, (audio from 1995). Commenters stating Glenn Beck is a racist, why? Because he's telling the truth? Did anyone actually watch the WHOLE PROGRAM with all of the audio/video of OBAMA and the information that lead to his conclusion that Obama was a racist? No, liberal bloggers and news media had just the one statement, that Glenn Beck stated Obama is a racist. OBAMA IS A RACIST!!!!!!! You brainwashed people call everyone who disagrees with Obama's policies as racist. It will be a long 4 years. I can now believe the Mayan calander ending Dec 21, 2012---1 Obama Presidential term. Oh yeah, and Obama also mentioned he "sought Marxist Professors"...those were HIS OWN WORDS; of course ppl like Chris Matthews "tingle up my leg" and all of the other medial outlets that did not expose this Marxist are all traitors. You have willingly sold this country down the river. Welcome to the USSA; and btw, remember Newsweek's cover: "We are all Socialists now" that's okay with you ppl. Where's Macarthey when you really need him.

- Why is this even a news story ? It is bad enough that Glenn Beck gets a platform to spew his lies and hatred. Now he gets a story about his lies and hatred ? This guy is an idiot and should just be ignored. Evidence of his idiocy: how about these two direct quotes -
"Obama has exposed himself as a person with 'a deep-seated hatred for white people'..."
"I'm not saying he doesn't like white people," Beck said.
Gee, talk about the dumbing down of America! Ignore this charlatan. - Reply to this comment
- Alas. Crowley and Gates are embarking on a research and teach-a-thon. We will see a transmutation of the whole subject without Obama's additional involvement, which won't be a bad thing. Remember Crowley teaches police courses on how to avoid racial profiling. Gates is a professor by profession. Their roles have found them by happenstance or God, whichever you wanna believe.

- I remain in disgust at just how dishonest our important political debates have become. Is this really my country?
Honest discourse and opposing opinions do not bother me. It keeps us sharp and creates healthy debate. But what the (mostly) far right is doing is simply dishonest. The politicians prostitute themselves so as to endear themselves with those that can keep them in power. I believe they will say anything.
Examples...
- The birthers: It's all arm-flailing until last night when "most House Republicans voted yea to a resolution honoring the 50th anniversary of Hawaiian statehood, which included language recognizing Hawaii as Obama's place of birth". -- The Atlantic
- Health reform: the Republicans repeatedly note studies from the "prestigious" Lewin Group, a company with a direct interest in the status-quo. Lewin Group is an Ingenix company. Ingenix is wholly-owned subsidiary of UnitedHealth Group, one of the largest managed health care and insurance companies posting gross profits of $18 Billion in 2008. Both Ingenix and UnitedHealth Group were, according to Wikipedia, investigated for fraud and "option backdating". The American Medical Association (AMA) claimed the data Ingenix used in their studies were "remarkably lower than the actual cost of typical medical expenses". This provided a basis for insurance companies to pay less for medical services.
- Health Care Reform Opponents: "it will kill old people".
- The McCain Campaign: "Obama's hangin' out with terrorists".
- Blenn Beck: "Obama" (our half-white president raised by a white woman) "is a rascist".
- Bush Presidency: "WMDs! - Reply to this comment

- @berkley_skirt_wearer,
Many black americans are "mixed race" but that doesn't mean that they're not black. It's funny to hear racists try to proclaim that Obama isn't black to disqualify any pride the black community may have in him as a black man.......
Racists like yourself will always see milestones and accomplishments made by minorities as a threat to your own social status......
