Obama to Meet with Gates and Crowley

(CBS/ AP)  President Obama will meet with Dr. Henry Louis Gates Jr. and Cambridge Police Sgt. James Crowley at the White House on Thursday, CBS News has confirmed.

The meeting, which has been rumored for the past few days, comes as scrutiny intensifies over Crowley's arrest of the prominent black scholar and Harvard professor.

"This is about having a beer and de-escalate," White House press secretary Robert Gibbs told reporters Tuesday morning, CBS News White House correspondent Mark Knoller reports.

Asked if the meeting was about race, Gibbs said, "one never gets away from it."

The White House meeting is scheduled for Thursday at 6:00 p.m. Eastern Time. Gibbs said it will likely take place at the picnic table outside the Oval Office, next to the White House swing set. Crowley is expected to bring his children, and Gates was also encouraged to bring family.

Crowley, who is white, arrested Gates, who is black, after an investigation into a suspected burglary found no burglars but escalated into a heated exchange between the men at Gates' home. When Mr. Obama said last Wednesday that the police had "acted stupidly," the national debate over racial profiling become so fierce that the president had to intercede again on Friday to get the public's attention back to his health care agenda.

Thus did a brief afternoon encounter turn into an ardently debated conflict in which other Americans drew their own conclusions about racial bias, proper deference to police and a president's appropriate role in a local law enforcement matter.

Mr. Obama phoned Crowley, who suggested the three men sit down for a beer at the White House. The president said he liked the idea, and Gates reportedly concurred when Mr. Obama phoned him next.

Appearing on CBS' "The Early Show," Rev. Jesse Jackson said that Thursday's meeting should be bigger than the meeting of men caught in the national spotlight.

"It's a big subject for a small meeting," Jackson said. "If Rosa Parks and James Blake, the bus driver, had met at the White House and did not deal with the issue of the accommodations, it would have been personal and not politics. And so, this issue of Dr. Gates being a victim of excessive force and bad judgment is a much bigger subject."

"This is a teachable moment," Jackson said, for America to address the issue of profiling. "Racial profiling is deadly, it's costly, expensive and really bad for your health."

Gates is an elitist snob who apparently enjoys playing victim for tha camera. Point blank... He should of followed the officers instructions and cooperated without losing his cool.

Overall, this situation is rather pathetic that in that it has drawn this level of attention from both the media and the goverment. Now you have to ask yourself, either there is a problem with racism, there isn't, or is it peoples self percived perception of racism. Such perceptions have a nasty way of making a non-issues into real issues rather quickly.

This is situation a prime example...

Ah it is nice to see the three Irish Tenors getting together again. They are even doing it the old fashioned way... a scuffle, a beer and a friendly chat. All is well in the world.

So you have professional law enforcement officer that is an expert in profiling. He has professional training in being able to take verbal abuse. He is going to meet with two men (I would assume in private for some of it) one of which that has control issues. Throw some alcohol into the mix and that should be a interesting meeting. I wonder if the CIA still has expertise in electronics hey Ms Pelosi? Obama and the Dems are making friends all over the law enforcement community.

911 TAPE RECORDING that referees to a BREAK IN that embarrasses a president. OH WOW history repeating itself? Where is the press outrage? Oh that's right, most of em voted for this guy. Wow being an independent is so liberating.

Well I don't know about the rest of you but I'm impressed...he's ended the wars, overhauled health care, resolved the financial crisis. Right. RIGHT. That would be the only way he'd have time for this B******T.

This meeting is stupid. There is no need for this meeting. It is just a photo op so the press can take pictures of the white and black man making nice while POTUS smiles. I thought the POTUS remark was stupid, this is even stupider. Beer? I agree that alcohol is a drug just like pot. Do you really want your kids to see pictures of two men drinking beer in the White House? Is this what you think defines our country? This is as bad as GWB and his Nascar Dad image. What happened to us?

You have to consider the source and ignore the republican extremists. They'll claim forever now that simply because the president addressed a social evil in this nation such as racism, that he is a racist. But all the blogs show the the southern white republicans are the real racists. They HATE Obama only because he is black.
