Texas Cops Stunned Silent by Baby's Murder

(AP)  The scene was so gruesome investigators could barely speak: A 3½-week-old boy lay dismembered in the bedroom of a single-story house, three of his tiny toes chewed off, his face torn away, his head severed and his brains ripped out.

"At this particular scene you could have heard a pin drop," San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said Monday. "No one was speaking. It was about as somber as it could have been."

Officers called to the home early Sunday found the boy's mother, Otty Sanchez, sitting on the couch with a self-inflicted wound to her chest and her throat partially slashed, screaming "I killed my baby! I killed my baby!" police said. She told officers the devil made her do it, police said.

Sanchez, 33, apparently ate the child's brain and some other body parts before stabbing herself, McManus said.

"It's too heinous for me to describe it any further," McManus told reporters.

Sanchez is charged with capital murder in the death of her son, Scott Wesley Buccholtz-Sanchez. She was being treated Monday at a hospital, and was being held on $1 million bail.

The slaying occurred a week after the child's father moved out, McManus said. Otty Sanchez's sister and her sister's two children, ages 5 and 7, were in the house, but none were harmed.

Police said Sanchez did not have an attorney, and they declined to identify family members.

No one answered the door Monday at Sanchez's home, where the blinds were shut. A hopscotch pattern and red hearts were drawn on the walk leading up to the house.

Sanchez's aunt, Gloria Sanchez, said her niece had been "in and out" of a psychiatric ward but did not say where she was treated or why. She said a hospital called several months ago to check up on her.

"Otty didn't mean to do that. She was not in her right mind," a sobbing Gloria Sanchez told The Associated Press on Monday by phone. She said her family was devastated.

Investigators are looking into Sanchez's mental health history to see if there was anything "significant," and whether postpartum difficulties could have factored into the attack, McManus said.

Postpartum depression and psychosis have been cited as contributing factors in several other cases in Texas in recent years in which mothers killed their children.

Andrea Yates drowned her five children in her Houston-area home 2001, saying she believed Satan was inside her and trying to save them from hell. Her attorneys said she had been suffering from severe postpartum psychosis, and a jury found Yates not guilty by reason of insanity in 2006.

In 2004, Dena Schlosser killed her 10-month-old in her Plano home by slicing off the baby's arms. She was found not guilty of reason by insanity, after testifying that she killed the baby because she wanted to give her to God.

Sanchez's neighbors expressed sorrow and horror Monday at the grisly killing.

Neighbor Luis Yanez, 23, said his kids went to school with one of the small children who lived at the house. He said he often saw a woman playing outside with the children but didn't know whether it was Otty.

"Why would you do that to your baby?" said Yanez, a tire technician. "It brings chills to you. They can't defend themselves."

Allen Taylor, another neighbor, said "once she gets back in her right mind, she's going to be devastated."

I believe it's quite possible that the woman is possessed. Given the barbaric, calice, and bizarre nature of the murder, it's hard to believe that something very dark did not have a hand in it. As someone else commented, it screams evil. I wouldn't be surprised if some people diagnosed with psychological disorders such as schizophrenia are actually possessed, or partially drawn into a darkness that most of us don't see. I really don't know; it is a theory though. Maybe she isn't, but I can't imagine a mother doing THAT to her child of her own free will, even if she isn't mentally stable. I guess only she and God know...

Postpartum depression and psychosis is serious condition that affects between 8 - 20% of women after pregnancy, especially the first 4 weeks. It is necessary to seek medical attention to treat postpartum depression.

You may have a higher chance of postpartum depression if you:

Are under age 20
Currently abuse alcohol, take illegal substances, or smoke (these are also serious medical health risks for the baby)
Did not plan the pregnancy or do not want the pregnancy
Had a mood or anxiety disorder prior to pregnancy, including depression with a previous pregnancy
Had something stressful happened to you during the pregnancy, including illness, death or illness of a loved one, a difficult or emergency delivery, premature delivery, or illness or abnormality in the baby
Have a close family member who has had depression or anxiety
Have a poor relationship with your husband, boyfriend, or significant other or are unmarried
Have financial problems (low income, poor housing)
Have little support from family, friends, and a significant other
Previously attempted suicide
Received poor support from your parents in childhood

IT SO NOT:
a geographical specific illness, there was the lady in San Francisco that thew her children from the Golden Gate Bridge, the lady in Pittsburg Pa that put the baby's head under the wheel of her car and back over it, pulling forward and backing several times and the lady in North Caroline that drove her car into the lake and drown her kids.

IT IS NOT:
a religous disorder, even tho people describe the voices as angels, or devils or whatever. They could just as well say the voice I heard sound like butch Sam from the market. He told me what freaking ever.

IT IS NOT:
A government plot to kill all the babies in the US or an experiment to see how far to push a brain to snap.

IT IS:
a HORMONAL/CHEMICAL INBALANCE, which can be corrected with medication. Should be diagnosed by blood work. Should be reported by family and other care takers!

This is not a joke people! This is a problem that can be solved. We spend billions to research tick turds, but not this? The children are our countries future. This is the a large cause for child abuse and infant mortality. Lets find a cure!

This woman is just sick and disgusting. I honestly almost vomited when I read the article on yahoo news. She needs to be tortured and left to die, she doesn't deserve a quick death she deserves a slow and painful death. And if they don't put her to death they at least need to cut her f***ing ovaries out while shes awake and with no pain killers so she can never conceive again. And I'm tired of hearing the same old "the devil made me do" bull s***, its just some lame ass excuse for people to not own up to what they did.

Seriously... how can you blame Texas when you know crazy people live in every community in the world. This could have happened anywhere! I myself am religious (believe there is a God) but that's my right and I respect those who choose to not believe as well. Did the devil make her do it? There are many probable explanations but i do not believe that is one of them. I myself worked with this woman (Otty) at one time. She's just another person who could have been from or moved to any state or country. Texas doesn't think its okay to kill regardless of mental state. Most of us would like to see her shot for what she did!

Oh, and you amigo... You get mad when you see religious signs promoting Christianity. I bet you'd smile if you saw a billboard that said, "we have wayy too many saits for this and Saints for that. Jeesus for this and Geesus for that." Which makes YOU a how u say hypocrite.

And (Texas haters) if you think Bush is crazy well your not alone. Many of us Texans think America needed a better president. But, you cannot blame his mistakes on Texas. Its just too bad there wasn't a better candidate.

Lets focus on the real issue... a crazy b**ch went berserk and killed an innocent little baby. She ruined several peoples' lives and has brought horror and heartache to her family and those who have heard this story. She deserves the death penalty regardless of where she's from or where she lives.

SENDING HER TO JAIL IS NOT THE ANSWER,INSANITY ISNT EITHER. ITS GETTING HELP FOR SINGLE MOTHERS THAT DO NOT SEE NO HOPE FOR THE FUTURE. EDUCATION IS KEY EVERYONE IS SCARED OF THE TOPIC SEX BUT EVERY KID NOW IS HAVING IT, HIDING AWAY FROM THE FACTS IS NOT HELPING. I KNOW SHE ISNT YOUNG BUT SOME WOMEN DO NOT HAVE THE MENTAL CAPACITY TO HAVE CHILDREN. PLUS SHE WAS IN AND OUT OF A CRAZY HOUSE. THEN PEOPLE DO NOT BELIEVE IN ABORTION. PEOPLE DONT WANT THE GOVERNMENT TO INTERVENE BUT WE DO WHAT WE WANT LIKE IF WE LIVE ALONE IN THIS WORLD. BABIES HAVING BABIES, WOMEN KILLING BABIES, PEOPLE SPEEDING ON HIGHWAYS/STREETS LIKE THERES A FIRE OR THE WORLDS ENDING, PEOPLE ROBBING, KILLING, RAPING ETC. THERE ARE SO MANY RULES/REGULATIONS BECAUSE WE TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THIS WORLD AND OUR FREEDOM. YES WE ARE FREE BUT WE HAVE TO RESPECT OTHERS HELP OTHERS. EDUCATION IS THE KEY. MILLIONS PLAY THE LOTTO AND THEY SAY THAT A PERCENT OF THAT MONEY GOES TO SCHOOLS????????? YET THERE CUTTING TEACHERS. WE NEED TO STEP UP LIKE HUMAN BEINGS AND HELP AND NOT LOOK OUT ONLY FOR YOU BUT TO DO THINGS BECAUSE WE CARE. THAT GIRL NEEDED HELP THEY PROBABLY GAVE HER SOME PILLS AND SENT HER HOME. GUESS WHO WON THERE THE DOCTOR AND THE INSURANCE. ME ME ME THATS HOW WE WROK HERE. IF THEY WOULD HAVE SPENT TIME WITH HER TIME TO ACTUALLY HEAR WHAT SHE HAD TO SAY, MAYBE THINGS WOULD HAVE BEEN DIFFERENT. GIVING SOMEONE PILLS IS NOT HELPING. MAY GOD BE WITH ALL OF US!!!!!!!!

This event is a sad and sick comment on some of the views people in this country hold about many things. "The devil made her do it" is as a convenient excuse as is "insanity" or "post-partum depression." But, the fact is we do not know why this woman did what she did and it is unlikely that we will ever know. What we do know is that this woman had some history of mental illness and yet we as a society did not consider whether or not she was fit to be a mother in the first place or should have been allowed to take the baby home from the hospital to raise it. We assume that all people have the right to bear and raise children regardless of their fitness and ability to do so. We know from hard and horrible experience that a great many people should never be allowed to have children or to raise them. Our society refuses to look at the issue of whether or not an individual or a couple has a right to bear children and raise them in any way they can. That right is not in the constitution of the USA, but we assume it is a "inalienable right" as mentioned in the Declaration of Independence even if the mother to be is completely unfit to raise a child, or if the father to be is unwilling or totally unable to help raise or support the child. I remember an article not too long ago about a man who had fathered 23 children by nearly as many different women and was spending his life in various jails for non-support. Yet we did not and we do not question the right of any individual to be the parent of a child or to raise that child until it is often far too late for us to save that child from a life of abuse, crime, poverty or mental illness. Our Children's Welfare Services are vastly underfunded and badly managed and as a result far too many children are neglected, abused or even killed because of the inaction of our society to ensure the welfare of the future generation of Americans. This article needs to be a wake up call to everyone that we have a responsibility to ourselves to ensure that every child born in this country is raised properly and given the best that we can give that child in order to secure our own future as a nation and as a people. Please remember that as we age the children born now will take over our country and run it, and if we do not raise these children with due diligence and care, then the nation we all have come to love and be proud of will not last much longer. Our nation's future is our children and it is up to us to make sure that they are raised with the best interests of all people in mind.

While I agree that all children should be raised as well as they can, I have to wonder who you think is the appropriate person or people to determine what raising the right might be.
