When It's Not So Black And White

(CBS)  As soon as President Obama was asked for his opinion about Henry Louis Gates' arrest, the details in the case were destined to get pushed into the background. Suddenly the story took on a separate existence.

All it took was for the president to go off script, dunning the Cambridge police for "acting stupidly," and you knew where this was heading.

Michelle Malkin had a fit assailing the "anti-police bigotry of the Left." The National Republican Congressional Committee, quick to spot a potential wedge issue, issued this declaration: "The president was slow to point out any wrongdoing in the wake of the Iranian election and his administration was quick to force through a failed stimulus plan even though they 'misread' the economy. This is certainly a questionable rush to judgment coming from a president who hasn't exactly been quick to call out unconscionable behavior by a merciless foreign dictator." For good measure, Little Green Footballs accused President Obama of playing the race card.

Had he been able to press the rewind button, President Obama doubtless would have chosen his words about the Cambridge police more wisely. Too late for that. But the rest of his comments shouldn't have upset many apple carts. What he offered was a very conventional assessment of police interactions with minority communities.

"The fact that blacks and Hispanics are picked up more frequently, and often time for no cause, casts suspicion even when there is good cause. And that's why I think the more that we're working with local law enforcement to improve policing techniques so that we're eliminating potential bias, the safer everybody's going to be."

Pretty boilerplate stuff. Yet remarkably, that was enough to set off a torrent of outrage, real and manufactured, one that eclipsed what was ostensibly the real story of the evening: the administration's proposals to reform the health care system.

In the YouTube era, when everyone is potentially a news stenographer, no video or audio clips have surfaced to help establish what actually happened on the evening of July 16. Unfortunately. Because that leaves us to rely on the testimonies of Gates,, the two policemen, police report J.P. Crowley and Carlos Figueroa, and Lucia Whalen, a neighbor, who was watching from the sidewalk.

But this is America, where despite the election of an African American, the question of race still looms large. So like characters in the Japanese movie, Rashomon, your vantage point invariably colors how you interpret what went down. That accounts for the competing narratives. One plausibly can make the case that this is not "black versus white," so much as "cop versus someone the cop wants to order around." The problem in this case isn't so much one of racism as it is one of police attitudes and rules of engagement.

By all accounts, Cambridge Sgt. James Crowley is a stand-up officer. Turns out that he taught a class about racial profiling at the Lowell Police Academy. What's more, he also gave mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to Reggie Lewis after the Boston Celtics' star collapsed in 1993 during an off-season basketball practice. At the time, Crowley was working as a police officer at Brandeis University. Hardly the second coming of Bull Connor.

For his part, Henry Gates is a distinguished professor at Harvard. More than most, he is familiar with the black community's history with the police. What went through his mind as the officer, checking out a burglary call, ordered him outside? I can't pretend to stand in his shoes but with the two men squaring off toe to toe was also two hundred years of American history.

ENOUGH ALREADY.....LET'S STAY FOCUSED ON A HEALTHY AMERICA!

The news should report on the war and keeping Americans safe by closing the borders.
What about the news that a great portion of the high cost of healthcare is due to the free healthcare for illegal immigrants.
What is news now-a-days?
American jobs are shutting down everywhere and even the layman knows that jobs are needed for a strong economy. How doe we pay taxes when we are not employing our own citizen?

Do you really believe that you couldn't get assistance because you're not Black, Indian, or Hispanic? Most state/federal assistance programs have income requirements. Perhaps the reason you can't get assistance is because you're over the maximum income. You have a home, in many states that alone will disqualify you. Your assets would likely exceed allowable assets, since you are a home owner. I can sympathize with you and many others are in the same predicament, but your situation shouldn't be a reason to resent other ethnicities. They don't make the rules.

So you were stopped for legitimate reasons, that doesn't mean that others aren't stopped for any reason other than their appearance. I was once stopped a block from my home. The officer claimed that I was speeding, though I'd just taken off from the light two seconds prior to being pulled over. Had I been driving a Porsche or other performace car, his claim might have been believable. In the end, he let me go without issuing a citation for speeding. Though I can't prove why I was stopped, I suspect it was because I was driving a car with 30 day tags and perhaps he thought it might be stolen. Guess I fit a profile. I produced my license and registration and he told me to slow it down as he walked away. In his zealous pursuit, he overlooked an obvious infraction; I wasn't wearing my glasses although I had a restriction on my license for glasses. I have many more stories I could share. Try being stopped in your neighborhood because you dared to greet someone and shake hands and then be accused of distributing drugs. It happened to my ex, also a block from home. When I went to pick the car up from impound, there was an open beer, yet he was arrested for narcotics distribution; no mention of the legitimate charge. Had I not insisted that he get a copy of the toxicology report, he would have done time in prison. The so-called evidence they had did not exist. The toxicology report had the name of a white female, which someone in the department had crossed through and written my ex's name on. It happens whether or not you and others believe it does. It's not playing any 'race card', it's a legitimate experience. Because it hasn't happened to you, doesn't mean it isn't real. We've never seen God, but doesn't mean he isn't real either.

Professor "I'll see your mama outside" Gates was the "racist" in this unfortunate incident. Our 10-year-old son once dialed 911 on a lark. We wound up with three police officers with drawn weapons in our home. Yes, we promptly showed our drivers's licenses as ID. [And, we were impressed with the fast response.] It was a lesson our son didn't ever forget. Gates was arrogant and belligerant. The police were responding to a valid 911 call reporting a suspected burlery [Gates and his driver were seen breaking into his own home]. If it had of been a real burglury and the police didn't respond, then Gates would have had a justified complaint. Neither Gates nor Obama have contributed to improving race relations in our country in this sorry episode. Both should be ashamed or their racial prejudice and bias.

All the president would have had to say is "I have my personal opinion, but the topic is health care here-- next question." I think that's in essence what president Bush would have done?

Half black or white, he is still your president and mine, so get over the color and deal with it. True enough the cops had a job to do, but my point is when he did tell him who he was, and there was someone with him telling them who he was how come it didn't just end there? And for the concerned neighbors, to me that sounds a little bit crazy, I don't know how long he has been living there but Im pretty sure they have seen him before going in and out of his home, but on this day he didn't look the same, so they decide to call the police because they were concerned, yeah right. Either way the situation went too far and the police needs to reevaluate their training.
