Obama: Changes Will Make People Healthier

In a prime time press conference Wednesday night, President Obama said he cannot guarantee that health care reform will not bring about any changes in how patients receive insurance or care. The changes that occur, though, should be for the better, he said.

"Can I guarantee there are going to be no changes in the health care delivery system? No," Mr. Obama said. "The whole point is to try to encourage changes that work for the American people and make them healthier."

Mr. Obama said decisions about what treatments deserve to be insured should be made by doctors and medical professionals.

"That's not how it's working right now," the president said, adding that insurance companies often make those decisions now.

The president also touted the proposal for a government-sponsored insurance plan, or "public option," as a way to bring about positive changes and keep costs down.

"There had been reports just over the last couple of days of insurance companies making record profits... and premiums are going up," Mr. Obama said. "What's the constraint on that? ...Well, part of the way is to make sure that there's some competition out there."

The president's press conference followed days of aggressive promotion of his health care agenda in television interviews and online. In tonight's address, Mr. Obama tied the country's economic future to health care reform.

(Read Mr. Obama's full prepared remarks here.)

"Let me be clear," Mr. Obama said tonight. "If we do not control these costs, we will not be able to control our deficit. If we do not reform health care, your premiums and out-of-pocket costs will continue to skyrocket."

The president acknowledged, though, that Congress is held up figuring out how to pay for reform.

"Before we talk about how to pay for it, let's talk about what needs to get done," Mr. Obama said.

The president said many Americans have concerns about how the proposed changes will affect their lives. In fact, the public has grown increasingly doubtful Mr. Obama can accomplish his goals, including health care reform, a recent Associated Press poll found.

However, Mr. Obama promised Congress has already agreed to some key points: Those with health insurance already will have more more security and more stability, he said. Furthermore, he said, the government will stay out of people's health care decisions, out-of-pocket costs will be limited and preventive measures like check-ups and mammograms will be covered.

Congress has also already agreed to establish an insurance exchange for individuals and small businesses, the president pointed out, and insurance companies will not be allowed to deny coverage for people with pre-existing conditions.

The president pointed out that he expects two-thirds of the bill to be paid for by re-allocating money already in the health care system more efficiently.

He said he is open to ideas from Congress on how to cover the rest of the cost, but he added, "I don't want that final one third of the cost of health care to be completely shouldered on the backs of the middle class."

Mr. Obama said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's proposal to tax families making more than $1 million a year meets his principle of keeping that burden off the middle class. He also said it is potentially possible to fund even more than two-thirds of reform by identifying more waste in the system.

CBS News Chief White House Correspondent Chip Reid asked the president what sacrifices beneficiaries will have to make in order to cut costs in Medicare. The president has proposed leaving Medicare payment rates up to an independent body of experts.

"It's not going to reduce Medicare benefits," Mr. Obama said, referring to the cuts that the commission would likely propose. "What it's going to do is to change how those benefits are delivered so that they're more efficient."

He related how the the pharmaceutical industry agreed to find $80 billion in cost savings "because there's probably even more waste than $80 billion in terms of how the drug plan in Medicare is administered."

On a day when bipartisan negotiations for health care reform continued to unravel, Mr. Obama stepped up his rhetoric against Republicans.

"I've heard that one Republican strategist told his party that even though they may want to compromise, it's better politics to 'go for the kill,'" the president said. "Another Republican senator said that defeating health reform is about 'breaking' me."

The president repeated his earlier message that "this isn't about me."

"This debate is about the letters I read when I sit in the Oval Office every day, and the stories I hear at town hall meetings," he said. "This debate is not a game for these Americans, and they cannot afford to wait for reform any longer."

The president said he has been "frustrated by some of the misinformation" coming from Republicans, though he appreciates efforts to cooperate from Senators like Chuck Grassley and Olympia Snowe. He also acknowleged that not all Democrats are happy with the legislation so far, but their concerns are being considered.

"This is part of the normal give and take of the legislative process," he said.

I'm just curious why more news is not being reported about the truth of the policies That president Obama is trying to

implement that will be so very harmful to our nation.
The healthcare bill will not allow people to keep their private health care even if they want to.
The private insurance companies will be put out of business because they will not be able to compete and they will be

outlawed from accepting any new clients.
It will lead to doctors quitting because they are not paid what they are worth which will lead to less doctors with more

load.
That will lead to inferior care and long lines and waiting lists.
As an example Canada's average wait time to see a doctor is 18 weeks.
My wife's appendix burst 15 years ago, and if she would have had to wait more than three days she would have died.
This bill will lead to rationing of care based on age and or hereditary factors.
The science czar wrote a book where he espouses population control through mandated abortions which are in the bill, and to

top it off this guy believes that babies up to 2 years of age can be aborted.
There are clauses in the bill containing class issues that will favor minorities and the poor over others.
The CBO has stated that it will cost an extra 300 plus billion dollars more than what the president is telling us and will

lead to massive fraud.
All of that plus the fact that the more the government digs into the private sector the more freedom we lose.
America is supposed to be a republic with proud enterprising citizens that believe in pulling their own weight and taking

care of each other because we want to, not because we are forced to.
Now either the president is deceiving us or he is trying to ruin our nation on purpose.
The question is, do you want freedom or do you want to deprive others of theirs for your own interests?

Friends, this is scary, please read the bill.

One day all Americans will wake up to realize that you're paying for the uninsured, underinsured and the insured anyway. Just your insurance company is making a very good profit and that is what everyone seems to ignore. Working for a health insurance company, I should know. The insurance companies and hospitals will make sure everyone is covered. That is why we are charged so much for procedures to be done. Also, that is why insurance companies doesn't cover everything. Have to leave room for the coverage of the un-insured and the company's profits. The last sentence is just my opinion though.

The only affordable ins I can get is for exclusions for pre-existing conditions, for which I have many. My conversion polidy costs me $1266 a month.... (no prescriptions and I have to co-pay $200 per diem for 1st 5 days of hosp. stay (ea. time I'm in the hospital. I get $1277 for s.s. How does one do this?

You dont need to be a ward of the state though, and have others pay for your healthcare. We all want reform of the health COVERAGE system. The government is not the answer though.

Americans, you can do a lot better than this. You are following a bunch of people who say "well Canada does this, or the UK does that." Who cares what they do in their countries?? We are Americans...we do it our way, and our way has almost always led to us being the best!

We are made up of all of the people who said "you have a king, you have a government, you have rules...I am outta here!!" Our motto has always been, right from the beginning, that government is a necessary evil and that the government that governs best, governs least. We used to know about things like tyranny, Constitutional limits, liberty. Thise things were almost always in our political conversations. They were out guiding lights.

Now, we talk about "fairness", or "universal", or "class". What has happened to us? Why have we turned into a nation of girlie-men? What happened to the American rugged exceptionalism, the one that took us to the moon, that conquered the Axis powers, the one that brought about almost every technological advance in the 20th Century?

What happened to our ethics, where we knew right from wrong? Why have we not demanded those same ethics out of our leaders, as we used to? How have we lost sight of the fact that not only are social welfare programs illegal according to our Constitution, they are immoral? How did we lose sight of the fact that those programs are nothing but organized theft?

How did we get to the point where instead of going down the street to help our neighbor who was laid off or injured or house burned down, and offer what we have to help make them whole again...instead we demand politicians take care of them...as we ignore the plight of our neighbors? How did we get to the point where lawyers i nWashington no better how to take care of our neighbor, than we do?

Karl Marx was right. Our society will not fall apart because of outside forces. No nation on Earth can challenge us militarily. No one can threaten our existence without their existence being terminated in the process.
No. The enemy is within, and it is ourselves. We have become complacent. We have allowed demagogues and power brokers to take over, telling us "dont worry about it...sit there on your couch and enjoy. We'll take care of this." And they do so as our money, our property and our freedom slowly slips away.

This is no longer America, and no longer holds the promise that America has always held. As was said during last Fall's campaign, we have become a nation of whiners! We demand, we protest, and we complain. No wonder the world hates us! Not because we are so strong militarily. Not because we have such a high standard of living. No, instead, the reason the world hates us is that we walk around acting entitled, full of arrogance.

There is a difference between pride and arrogance. There is a difference between confidence and entitlement. We have lost sight of those differences.

This healthcare debate is a Waterloo. It may be President Obama's, or it may be America's. We are no longer a capitalist society. We are no longer a constitutional republic. We are transitioning to something else.

Any historical and political scholar can tell you where we are headed. What we are doing is nothing new. What we have done to this nation for over 100 years is the rule, not the exception. That is why we are currently the oldest continuous government in the world right now. It is because governments always destroy themselves. Tyranny ALWAYS returns.

Our Founders tried to set up a platform with which, if we are vigilent, would hold the forces of tyranny at bay. At the close of the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia on September 18, 1787, a Mrs. Powel anxiously awaited the results, and as Benjamin Franklin emerged from the long task now finished, asked him directly: "Well Doctor, what have we got, a republic or a monarchy?" "A republic if you can keep it" responded Franklin.

We have not kept it. We are drowning i ndebt. Everyone now receives some kind of compensation from the government. The Federal government is now without limits. We have begun the process of decline.

I wish I were hopeful that Americans will see the decline, and change course. But the political and historical ignorance of the American public is staggering. We just no longer know better.

In the end, it will probably take great pain, and some courageous leaders in that pain, to lead us back to liberty. No leaders of that sort have materialized.

I pray that the Lord would not wait to long to help provide us the way back.

Mortarman, I listed to Obama for a couple minutes last night, and I was struck by what he said....The subject/question was about the plan fining people for not having insurance....he said, "there will always be those who don't get insurance, get in an accident, then have to go to the hospital and then we have to pay for them." actually complaining that he has to pay for someone who doesn't have insurance, justifying the fine for people un-insured....he has a problem paying for this one guy's hospital visit, but has no problem with US paying for EVERYONE'S healthcare and hospital visits.....the absolute cluelessness of even the President, boggles my mind.....or is it me who doesn't understand what I just said ?
by Mortarman29 July 23, 2009 10:53 AM EDT
No Joe, you have it right.

Who says we have to pay for the 23 year old kid who is a college student, decides he doesnt want to pay for health insurance right now ("I'm healthy"), and gets hit by a bus, as the president said? Why do we have to pay?

Isnt it his responsibility, and that of his family? If he is stupid enough not to cover himself, then he should have to pay for his mistakes. Not the rest of us.

Actually, if the 23 year old knew that no one would pick up the bill if he got sick or hurt, then I think he would probably not take that chance and buy the insurance.

Unless he is a compete idiot.

But, the liberals want us to continue our nanny state. Make things safe, fair, universal for everyone. What a crock. You cant make things safe without taking away liberty. You cant make things "fair" or "equal" (meaning fairness/equal in result, not fairness in opportunity)without lowering people to the lowest commom denominator (you cant get everyone to succeed at the level of the best, so we bring the best down to the level of everyone else). And you cant make things universal without destroying liberty and destroying innovation and success.

Unfortunately, this is our path, unless folks demand we stop immediately and turn around back in the right direction. I dont see that happening anytime soon.

UH...NO...LET'S TALK ABOUT HOW TO PAY FOR IT BEFORE THEY PASS THE BILL...BECAUSE THEN IT'S TOO LATE!

This President thinks everyone is stupid. He is very arrogant but tries to act like he is a nice guy and down to earth. I did not vote for him and I am trying to support him--I just cannot. His ego will destroy him.

Does everyone want to have their medical records in the hands of the Federal Government ?? That will be the case, if this welfare-care bill gets passed.....then, in my opinion, the next step is to tax you or limit care, according to your records or pre-existing conditions.
