World's Oldest Mother Reported Dead at 69

Cause of Death Unknown for Maria del Carmen Bousada, Who Gave Birth to Twins at Age 66

  •  (CBS/AP)

(AP)  Spanish newspapers say a woman who was believed to have become the world's oldest new mother when she gave birth to twins at age 66 has died. She was 69.

The newspapers El Mundo and Diario de Cadiz reported Tuesday that Maria del Carmen Bousada died on Saturday. She gave birth in December 2006 after undergoing in vitro fertilization.

Diario de Cadiz says her brother, Ricardo Bousada, refused to disclose the cause of death. The newspaper says Bousada was diagnosed with a tumor shortly after giving birth.

Bousada said in an interview with a British tabloid in 2007 that she lied and said she was 55 in order to skirt the age limit for single women at the California fertility clinic where she got treatment.

This is truly a sad story, that these kids are left without a mother. This is why God had menopause, so old women would not be fertile anymore. This was a selfish act on her part. This was once again an act of Medicine , not a gift from God. Is she any different from Kate Gosslin or Octomom, who use Medical treatments for fame or fortune. They are pathetic ! They definitely need to look into these doctors who perform these kinds of procedures. Also, she came into the US to get this done, not even Spain would do it ! These mentally ill women are coming out of the woodwork to bare children and it needs to be stopped! Octomom, Kate Gosslin, Maria del Carmen...... the list goes on and on...

At the age of 66 she has already reached retirement age. Social Security anyone? By the time these little tikes reach their high school graduation she would have been 84. And a whopping 88 when they graduate a 4 year college. Just who exactly would be footing the bill for all that? Good grief.

You know, I understand fully the need to produce a child or two, doing the whole parenting thing and all that. But kids are not cheap, nor are they easy to keep up with during those toddler and pre-school years. Also, how does a parent 3 generations removed keep up to date on the real world kids grow up in. That can be hard enough for parents only 1 generation different in age to their offspring.

If this woman really wanted kids that bad, she could have gone through big-sisters or adopt a grandchild programs. How sad that these two little ones are now orphans. Who raises them now? How are they supposed to understand that their mother was quite literally old enough to be their great-grandmother?

Even 55 is old but if you can handle the task, go for it. Myself, I could not and I would think that it is a young woman's job. One who can keep up. But that's just my opinion of how I would feel. She obviously wanted them and got what she wanted. I had my kids at a young age and they are grown now but think I'm old and I'm only 50. She was a grand mom that's for sure but look at Sarah in the Bible's Old Testament; she was about 75 when her and Abraham begat Isaac amd Abraham was even older than her.

Fertility treatments for a lady in her late 60s -- puh-lease! Even if she lived to 90, she would not be able to be there for the kids into their early adulthood. As a parent of a 22-year-old, I can say that this is an important time for parents to be available to share experience in everything from post-college career decisions, relationship-family decisions, and simple concepts like learning to live on your own. Now these 3-year old twins will not have their mom for the rest of their lives. I feel that was an irresponsible decision for this woman to make.

I don't agree with her decision to become a mother so late in life, but you can't guarantee that ANYONE will be there for their grown children or even young children. People die no matter how old they are.

Poor children. What was the stupid woman thinking? I'm so tired of all the nutjobs thinking kids are their toys. Octomom, John and Kate and now this dingbat. Some people should not be allowed to breed.

How dare anyone judge this person, who just wanted to start a family in her 60s ! She had a right to be the person her passion dictated, no matter what. No matter what. How do I explain this ? When the desire to stop dating, settle down and get serious hits, it may not be at the same time for every person. For her, it was in her mid 60s. That is her choice, and I personally RESPECT that feeling and decision. For the kids, why, heck, they are flexible and can live in many ways, with expectations and learning from an older parent even better ! Studies show that no matter what happens to kids, what parents decide to do, move, up root, etc, those kids will be OK. Sure.

What a stupid, selfish, stupid woman to have children when she's already 66. Well, it happened, she's dead. Now who will raise the children she so irresponsibly brought into this world? Now they are motherless.

Why don't you breeders just STOP!? Or is your sick cumpulsion to bring children into this world so strong, you can't make a smart decision? Adopt!

Adopt WHAT? Someone has to MAKE the children for you to adopt them. Check a textbook, it's true, I swear!

Since when is 69 years old "new"?
by averjane July 15, 2009 12:51 PM EDT
She's the oldest mother because she gave birth at an old age not because she is the oldest mother alive. If that were the case, there would be people posting comments that their mother's are 100 years old which some are.

They check ID to buy beer but not for fertility treatment? This is why there's an age limit. Now...who is going to raise the 3-year-old twins?
