Sources: Tenet Killed Cheney's CIA Program

(AP)  Former intelligence officials say ex-CIA Director George Tenet terminated a secret program to develop special hit teams to take out al Qaeda leaders in 2004 but the plan was later resurrected by Tenet's successor, Porter Goss.

Several officials say Tenet ended the program in 2004 because the agency could not work out the practical details to put it into use during its first three-year incarnation. All spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter.

Current CIA chief Leon Panetta told the congressional intelligence committee members in June that he had canceled the program after learning of its existence. Panetta also told lawmakers that former Vice President Dick Cheney initially directed the CIA not to inform Congress about the effort.

Why would Cheney "order" CIA not to disclose plans to kill AlQaeda operatives to Congress ? This is easier to sell than waterboarding, after all. Especially, if it was just considered and not implemented and there was no need to tell Congress anyway ? What could be the reason to specifically order them to keep it secret ? Why did Cheney have to be involved in this ? Either this is completely stupid or there is something else.
These "assassination plans" look like a smokescreen to me.

I suppose if we had kept our eye on the ball in Afghanistan to begin with, instead of being distracted by a country that had nothing to do with 9/11, we might have blown through the Taliban to get to OBL and destroy Al Qaeda once and for all.

But, we did get distracted, and we did contract out the coup de grace at Tora Bora to local warlords.

The 14 year old grandson got his bullet the old fashion way. He earned it. When the Navy SEALs breached the door of the room he was in he pointed an AK-47 in there direction. When you point a weapon at a SEAL entry team during CQB the usual result is that you get shot. If he wanted to live he should have dropped his weapon and surrendered

It cannot be wise to go around the world killing those politically opposed& their families;they may just respond in kind-the big shots sending their kids overseas have the biggest exposure.The 14 year old grandson of saddam,dead at US hands was a terrible thing.Panetta is showing all republicans are not as stupid as Bush & Cheney -the party can return ,WITHOUT the whaco stuff.

How is Leon Panetta a liar?

Cheney started the program, Tenet terminated it, then when Porter Goss took his place, he reinstated it. Being terminated by Pinetta recently.

If Tenet canclelled the program in 2004, and Panetta told congressional leaders in June that HE cancelled it upon learning about it, what else would you call it?
