North Korean Ship Turning Around

Report: Kang Nam, Under Threat Of U.N. Resolution, Changes Course

(CBS/AP)  The North Korean ship Kang Nam has turned around and is heading back toward the south coast of China, reports CBS News national security correspondent David Martin.

The ship, which left a North Korean port on June 17, is the first vessel monitored under U.N. sanctions that ban the regime from selling arms and weapons-related material.

It is currently in the vicinity of the Parcel Islands 100 miles off Vietnam, Martin reports, adding that there is no specified reason as of now for why it has changed course.

"With still no long range missiles on the launch pads and no time to get them ready for a July 4 launch, it would appear the temperature is being lowered," Martin said of North Korea's threats to launch missiles at Hawaii on the U.S.'s Independence Day.

"If the ship is on its way back, it would mean that Resolution 1874 is taking effect and causing the North to retreat," Kim Tae-woo, vice president of the Korea Institute for Defense Analyses, told the Korea Herald.

The United Nations resolution requires member nations to request permission to inspect the cargo of ships suspected of carrying banned goods.

The U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Susan Rice, said on CBS' "Face the Nation" that Washington is "following the progress of that ship very closely." Rice would not say whether the U.S. would confront the Kang Nam.

North Korea has said it would consider any interception of its ships a declaration of war.

On Monday, Myanmar's authorities told the North Korean ambassador they
won't allow the Kang Nam 1 to dock if it is carrying weapons or other banned materials, a Radio Free Asia report said.

Myanmar authorities also told the ambassador last week that they would search the ship if its enters its waters, the U.S. government-funded RFA reported Monday from Washington, citing an unidentified senior diplomat from the Southeast Asian nation.

Completely agreed. Notice how NK wouldn't come near us with Bush in office? It was easy for them to say they didn't like us, but nothing like this.

Looks like Obama's world apology tour of "I'm sorry for my country, I don't really like em either" speeches- did not work.

Normally, I would say that ignorance is bliss. Not in this case. Because of the ignorance of people like yourself and YOUR president (I do not consider him my president) this whole country is in a world of trouble, and not just by NK. And- before you start Bush-bashing- this country started to go downhill because of the decisions that Clinton made while he was in office. Now, it's only getting worse because your president thinks spending money is a good idea in a recession.

Personally, I believe the only reason why Obama got elected is because the Republicans were busy working (keep up with me-I know "working is a hard term for you to get, Sky) to support millions of people on welfare (cough-democrats-cough) and you people had nothing better to do because you're worthless life suckers who think everything should be given to you.

AT LEAST- Bush had enough balls to defend this country while "King Obama" is only trying to give it away. I think the only reason he wouldn't consider helping the people in Iran is because he agrees with dictatorship.

And please-"we lost" we lost what? What the hell do we have to lose that you democrats haven't already taken from us anyway? Bunch of babies- I have a four year old that does ask for as much as you people do.

And next time you're near a paper or not near liberal-democrat-extremist.com, look up what most of your "democrats" think of him now-

Your comments are beginning to reek of rancid ignorance. I travel a fair bit and the only difference i notice now is people are more likely to smile at you and less likely to spit on your shoes when you mention where you're from.

I repeat sir, you have lost the game....
Its not about you :(

THE BOTTOM LINE

Obama has done NOTHING to accomplish whatever victory this is.

It happened because of pressure applied by OTHER COUNTRIES.

The world has already lost respect for Obama. Now we are just a beggar nation run by a wimpy clueless boring nerd.

If you travel outside the USA lately (a rare luxury for us common folk anymore), if you mention the USA they just say "United who?"

Hey Joe - I think you were on TV last night. Law & Order was about bare knuckle fighting in NYC. I'm sure I saw you in the crowd cheering 'em on.

OK Obama the amateur; Stock market up 1000 pts this quarter (that's 12.5% up compared to 50% down with Shrub); Chrysler out of bankruptcy GM headed that way as opposed to being ceded billions by Shrub; Publicly owned bonds from Citicirp making 7.5% interest as compared with Shrubs gifts to AIG $100 billion and counting; Unmployment still growing, yes, but at a slower rate than under Shrub; Iraqi security forces taking over Baghdad months before Shrub would have let them; More soldiers in Afghanistan where Shrub should have left them. Peaceful, non-invasive outcomes with NK and Iran, Shrub would tried to influence the election outcome in Iran and paid off NK as he gave than $25 mil last year. The US, once again recognized as a positive influence round the world, as opposed to the biggest danger to peace or a total laughing stock under Shrub..... I could go on.

I'm sorry to compare everything to your Fuhrer's recors but it's so easy to show vast improvements over the last six months. Anyway you all compared everything Shrub did to Clinton - of course lying all the time. Overall, compared to Shrub, Obama is a paragon of virtue and intelligence, but he's not the Messiah.

@ darthcheney345 i'm pretty certain this is the point at which you lost the game sir....

Sounds like you're allergic to facts.

I notice you didn't mention a single one.

I have ready many stories concerning the Kang Nam 1 and I have not seen one word concerning the capture and boarding by North Korea (NK) of the USS Pueblo.

The NKs not only took the ship, which they still have, but killed some of the crew, the remainder of the crew was held prisoners and where released after a good deal of torture.

Based on the above, I believe we have every right to capture any NK ship we can find, especially now that NK has renounced the Korean War Truce.

The USS Pueblo you refer to was built in 1944 as a U.S. Army cargo ship.

In 1966, she was transferred to the U.S. Navy, after which she was converted to a spy ship. In 1968, she was captured by North Korea while operating in the ocean off the coast of North Korea.

No U.S. vessels were sent to defend the Pueblo; President Johnson's excuse was that he was "asleep" so he didn't know the Pueblo was under attack until it was too late. The Pueblo was captured by four ships and a number of Mig-21 jet fighter planes.

The crew was captured and tortured, and the ship remains in the posession of North Korea. It was the only U.S. ship to be captured since 1941.

All on a Democrat's watch.

Sound familiar?

-------------

On the morning of Jan 20, the market opened above 8200.

Today it closed below 8500.

That's less than 300 points.

Oh, I get it. You're trying to ignore how much the market DROPPED after Obama took office.

So, as long as the market dropped, that was Bush's fault.

Obama didn't take effect until the market went up.

ROTFLMAO!

Obama should just make a deal with China: We look the other way while they take over North Korea. They have the best chance of getting it done with the fewest casualties and *everyone* would be soooo much better off than they are now.

Well maybe not Mr. Bad-Hair-Day; but the rest of the North Koreans would be lots better off. Of course, China probably doesn't want the liability.

>the reason why China would continue to deliver every shipment North Korea wants to make is because they have no reason not to.

They have a reason not to - it's a problem they don't need. Most of their trading partners are on the other side of this so why annoy them? There's no up side for them to transship this unless NK comes up with a lot of money.

"I have to admit that I am impressed. Over the years, I cannot think of any other time in which I have seen North Korea back down quite as obviously as they are now."

Maybe the ICBM fired from California early Monday morning with three dummy warheads that hit a target Southeast of North Korea had something to do with it.
Just a thought.

N Korea is just responding to pressure from the OTHER COUNTRIES that still project an image of strength.

The US has a stash of about 9600 nuclear weapons. That's gotta project something without saying a word. Maybe Obama doesn't want to act like Bush did.

================================

I can and will "LOL" you because of the most thoughtless statement I have seen on this article. The claim never was made that Obama made 'any' of the over 9600 nukes we have. Being the President Of the USA he just "inherited" these 'convincers' along with the massive economic meltdown and wars that bushie II passed along.

I see another of President Obama's "weak appeasement policies" as Limbaugh and Hannity call it has failed.
You Obama haters just can't get a break can you? You always looking like clueless right wing parrots and lemmings.
LOL
Rational people realize that no matter how well President Obama does his job you people will spew lies and hate and live in some right wing fantasy world of hate and racism so go ahead and spew.

I agree with the poster who said China offered to take the "cargo" and deliver it themselves to circumvent the UN sanctions.

Obama has been played the fool again.

"Obama has been played the fool again."

Wouldn't that depend on what China does with the cargo???

Now watch the Obamabots try to take credit for it, as if Obama had anything to do with it.

N Korea laughs at Obama.

N Korea is just responding to pressure from the OTHER COUNTRIES that still project an image of strength.

We lost our membership in that club on Day 1.

That's enough out of you kim.

I have to admit that I am impressed. Over the years, I cannot think of any other time in which I have seen North Korea back down quite as obviously as they are now. And somehow, I just can't wrap my head around the idea that Mr. Kim did it to make Obama look good. No... Obama basically ignored Kim's squirrelly little azz, depriving him of the benefits he expected from his latest temper-tantrum.

My only real concern is for those two female reporters NK is holding hostage. I would not be surprised if at least one of them gets shot trying to escape.

Void_Master - Thanks for joining the fray. I agree completely, and yes, those who are of a praying mind, should be adding those two ladies to their lists.

I'll speak to my mother about that prayer request. Generally speaking, the quickest way to a drought is for me to pray for rain.

Maybe I should pray for Kim Jong Il's health -- hehehehehe.

That's exactly what Shrub would have done, and if there's anything that would actually get NK actually using its sabers it would be a dumb move like that.
