The crash came two years after aviation officials reported faults with the plane, an Airbus 310 flying the last leg of a journey from Paris and Marseille to Comoros, with a stop in Yemen to change planes. Most of the passengers were from Comoros, a former French colony. Sixty-six on board were French nationals.
Khaled el-Kaei, the head of Yemenia airline's public relations office, said a 14-year-old girl survived the crash. And Yemen's embassy in Washington issued a statement saying a young girl survived and was taken to a hospital. It also said five bodies were recovered.
There were earlier reports that a 5-year-old boy survived. El-Kaei said that was not known and the airline had lost contact with its office in Comoros because of bad weather.
Yemeni civil aviation deputy chief Mohammed Abdul Qader said the flight data recorder had not been found and it was too early to speculate on the cause of the crash. But he said the wind was 40 miles per hour (61 kph) as the plane was landing in the middle of the night.
"The weather was very bad," he said, adding the windy conditions hampered rescue efforts.
The Yemenia plane was the second Airbus to crash into the sea this month. An Air France Airbus A330-200 crashed into the Atlantic Ocean on June 1, killing all 228 people on board, as it flew from Rio de Janeiro to Paris.
The Comoros is an archipelago of three main islands situated 1,800 miles (2,900 kilometers) south of Yemen, between Africa's southeastern coast and the island of Madagascar. It is a former French colony of 700,000 people.
In France, school vacations began this week and many on the plane were heading home to visit.
CBS News correspondent Elizabeth Palmer reports that the jet went down in deep water about nine miles short of the East African coast.
Gen. Bruno de Bourdoncle de Saint-Salvy, the senior commander for French forces in the southern Indian Ocean, said the Airbus 310 crashed 21 miles from the Moroni airport.
French aviation inspectors found a "number of faults" during a 2007 inspection of the plane that went down, French Transport Minister Dominique Bussereau said on i-Tele television Tuesday.
In Brussels, EU Transport Commissioner Antonio Tajani said the airline had previously met EU safety checks and was not on the bloc's blacklist. But he said a full investigation was now being started amid questions why passengers were put on another jet in the Yemeni capital of San'a.
An Airbus statement said the plane that crashed went into service 19 years ago, in 1990, and had accumulated 51,900 flight hours. It has been operated by Yemenia since 1999. Airbus said it was sending a team of specialists to the Comoros.
The A310-300 is a twin-engine widebody jet that can seat up to 220 passengers. There are 214 A310s in service worldwide with 41 operators.

A crisis center was set up at Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris. Many passengers were from the French city of Marseille, home to around 80,000 immigrant Comorans, more even than Comoros' capital of Moroni.
Some French Comorans insisted that their earlier warnings about the airline's safety weren't heeded by authorities.
Stephane Salord, the Comoros' honorary consul in Marseille, called Yemenia's aircraft "flying cattle trucks."
"This A310 is a plane that has posed problems for a long time, it is absolutely inadmissible that this airline Yemenia played with the lives of its passengers this way," he said.
"Some people stand the whole way to Moroni," said Mohamed Ali, a Comoran who went to Yemenia's headquarters in Paris to try to get more information.
Thoue Djoumbe, a 28-year-old woman who lives in the French town of Fontainebleau, said she and others had complained about the airline for years.
"It's a lottery when you travel to Comoros," said Djoumbe. "We've organized boycotts, we've told the Comoran community not to fly on Yemenia airways because they make a lot of money off of us and meanwhile the conditions on the planes are disastrous."
Christophe Prazuck, French military spokesman, said a patrol boat and reconnaissance ship were being sent to the crash site as well a military transport plane. The French were sending divers as well as medical personnel, he said.
French President Nicolas Sarkozy "expressed his deep emotion" about the crash and asked the French military to help in the rescue operation, particularly from the French islands of Mayotte and Reunion.
Yemenia airline officials say the 11-member crew was made up of six Yemenis, including the pilot, two Moroccans, one Indonesian, one Ethiopian and 1 Filipino. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

Lufthanza plane reportedly catches fire after emergency landing

Yemeni families gathered at the Sana?a Airport Friday night over news that a Lufthanza plane caught fire due to emergency landing at Frankfurt International Airport few minutes after taking off from the same airport.
The incident resulted in the flight delay from 09:00 pm on Friday until 01:00 am on Saturday (local time), said sources at the Sana?a Airport.
A Lufthanza plane, A330, which was en route to Addis Ababa and Sana?a, had to abruptly land again due to a technical fault, some passengers who arrived on board another plane told NewsYemen.
The front tries of the plane exploded and the plane started sliding on the ground and then a small fire caught the plane, but firemen could put it out, said a passenger.

people cannot access their dead bodies is very sad, i am not supporting the yemenia crew bodies only but i am also talking for the comorans also. after all, all are humans and what must be going through with their families.
just imagine the pain of all those families desperately trying to get information about dead bodies and mind you from far away, who can give them information, nobody, because french are trying to pull time to hide their truth.
as what exactly is happening there with search rescue teams is they are denied access to the area where dead bodies are. today 9 days are completed. very sad - Reply to this comment

i didnt know how to get it here as i am not computer expert but i want the world to know that first find out the reason for crash then talk, what is the real cause nobody knows but all technical, mechanical, human, mistakes are speculated including tarnishing the image of the company? why? because of poor 3rd world country? why not airfrance judged the same way as even it fell into the sea ? why their pilots are born with blue blood because they are white skin, and blue eyes? when a company is flying for 40yrs without accident, and it crashed in no time eu tarnished their image. right or wrong.
when yemeni officials got the reports that french are not allowing divers to go close to the sight of dead bodies, and reason there was a french military vessel who shot the aircraft even if by mistake then they should say it openly. why not. its so easy to blame others but difficult to accept their fault because of what, big country france, airbus, or politics? some people wrote here stupid pilots-dead people? its very sad. why they are not humans their families are not crying now?

He affirmed his country's keenness on boosting the brotherly relations between the two countries, confirming that the airplane accident will not affect the two countries' ties and joint cooperation.
A Comorian official told the London based al-Sharq al-Awsat newspaper that they are not ruling out the possibility that the Yemenia Airbus 310 was shot down with a missile, ensuring that the French Ambassador in Moroni told some top Comorian government officials that there were French Navy vessels performing maneuvers in the area of the accident a day before the plane crash. He also accused French navy authorities of intentionally driving the rescue teams away from the accident area.
President Sambi drew the audience?s attention to the issue that France is not showing enough cooperation for the rescue of survivors, recovering bodies, and cleaning up the wreckage from the plane at a meeting held by the Comorian government?s rescue teams yesterday at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

- Moroni is a notoriously difficult airfield to fly into, especially at night. The airport is at sea-level on the West side of a skinny island, with a 7700' mountain just to the southeast of it and a 3600' one to the northeast.. There is no published approach to Rwy 20, just an VOR/DME/ILS for 02. At night there are very few ground lights, a true 'black-hole' with part of it being the volcano mentioned.
Moroni. The approach into runway 20 is anything but a straight in approach. There is no such thing as a 10 mile or even 5 mile straight in approach because of the hills to your left. You are doing a visual approach from right base and constantly turning to align yourself with the runway and only the last mile or so are you actually completely aligned with the runway. Because of this, my company has designated Moroni as a 'difficult airport' and we are only allowed to fly there.
Moroni at night is a very dangerous thing to do. The risks involved are too high and the services available are very minimal. The non-precision app at night is a ridiculously difficult approach in good weather.
The Yemenia pilots operate out of very difficult airports in tough conditions on a daily basis, Sanaa their home base can be a very tough place to operate a wide body jet. I would not assume that their pilots skills were lacking.
Any pilot flying that approach in bad weather at night would have a much higher risk of dying than is acceptable.
The airline I flew there with pulled out of Moroni 5 or 6 years ago because of those dangers, thankfully!
What ever the cause of this crash, hopefully night flights into that place will be stopped by all airlines.
Good, those folks on the Comoros can stay on their miserable islands and lump it. Yemenia seems to have a reasonable safety record up to now...so all this knee-jerk nonsense about this accident is just that....nonsense.
Within few hours from the crash French authorities are brave enough to judge about technical defaults of the Yemenite airplane and the EU announces publishing of a worldwide black list of airlines. I am wondering why there were no similar statements immediately following the crash of Air France airplane a month ago, where all signs indicated technical default of the airplane as a reason of the crash. If the technical check conducted in 2007 at the airport of Paris resulted in a number of serious defects, why the airline was still allowed to enter EU airports? Either the airline was not checking properly its fleet and it should be kept away from the EU, or the defects were not serious at all and the French officials should keep their mouth shut.

if yemenia was bad airline and not to forget only airline going to moroni, then they are stupids to still go on this airline they should have made the same show what they are doing now to stop the airline, and requested air france another crash airline to take them to moroni.

- An accident like this is tough to call.
Another Airbus down, another planeload of people dead.
But was it because it's an Airbus, or because the pilot was pressured by the greedy airline company to attempt a landing in "howling winds????"
Was it greed? Or was it Airbus?
Let's just scrap ALL Airbus aircraft. AND scrap all greedy companies.
