(CBS/AP)  The Jackson family issued a statement Saturday to People Magazine, conveyed by family patriarch Joseph Jackson. In full, it reads:

"In one of the darkest moments of our lives we find it hard to find the words appropriate to this sudden tragedy we all had to encounter. Our beloved son, brother and father of three children has gone so unexpectedly, in such a tragic way and much too soon. It leaves us, his family, speechless and devastated to a point, where communication with the outside world seems almost impossible at times.

We miss Michael endlessly, our pain cannot be described in words. But Michael would not want us to give up now. So we want to thank all of his faithful supporters and loyal fans worldwide, you - who Michael loved so much. Please do not despair, because Michael will continue to live on in each and every one of you. Continue to spread his message, because that is what he would want you to do. Carry on, so his legacy will live forever.

In addition, Joseph Jackson wishes to personally convey: "My grandchildren are deeply moved by all the love and support you have shown for them and their father, Michael Jackson."

Joseph Jackson & Family"

Earlier Saturday, the Rev. Jesse Jackson said that Michael Jackson's family wants an independent autopsy to determine the cause of the King of Pop's death.

The family told Jesse Jackson about its wishes while he spent time with them during the past two days, the reverend said in an interview with The Associated Press.

He said there were unanswered questions surrounding the death, including the role of the personal cardiologist who was with Michael Jackson when he died.

The Los Angeles County coroner's office performed an autopsy on the singer's body on Friday but deferred a finding on the cause of death pending further tests that could take more than a month.

Coroner's officials said they released Michael Jackson's body to his family late Friday night. Jesse Jackson did not say if an independent autopsy had been arranged.

My statement to his fans: he will never again molest any young boys. How can anyone be a fan of a child molester?

man, what's going on here. dogging each other like that. life is way too short too be bitter at one another. yeah, it's sad of michael's passing, but that just shows us that no matter whom you are, we all pass away. no matter of celebritism, wealth, race, etc....its inevitable. we should just wish the parents/family condolences about their lost and forget about the whys and the what if's. that won't bring him back. we're all going to die, some of us are just going to have more fun getting there. besides were just passing through, it's God's call when it's our time. we can't stop it, money, power, fame can't stop it. so instead of crapping on someone who has passed away, lets focus on being civilized, caring human beings and respect the family. to each and every family that looses someone they love, because someone dies every minute of each day, while as the cycle goes, one is born. there are more important things too be pissed off at or worry about. like for instance, what kind of world will we leave our kids?, what are we teaching them? why is there war? why is there the homeless?, why is there hatred? why is there still racism? why can't we just love and get along? so, peace out to each and everyone. my condolences to michael jackson's family. may he rest in peace and may we live each day as trying to fix it, care about it. ty

Elizabeth Taylor said about the passing of Michael Jackson, "My life feels so empty." How many other people, fans, and gawkers who didn't share anything close to their relationship are claiming they feel the same way? May MJ rest in peace...he was truly a world class performer.
Nobody's talking about the elephant in the room: Why was there a cardiologist attending to Mr. Jackson at home when he collapsed and died?
This is very odd.

Dear Jackson Family,
I truly am sorry for your lose. I lost my father in April and I still miss him. I miss my father's voice. I am legally blind and so I heard Michael and his family on the radio when I was a teen in Maine. I do see some in one eye, I am 54. I like most of his music. He was gifted. He was loved by millions . I know this is a sad time for you all.
Love and prayers, Barbara M age 54 Seattle

Whether it evokes pity or scorn from all of you, Jackson was insane, and probably criminally insane. No reasonable person uses plastic surgery to change his race and make himself look like Peter Pan. Even Quincy Jones in an NBC interview said he just didn't understand why Michael would change himself so radically, and why all the pictures in his house were of blond, blue-eyed boys.

Elvis was just as rich and famous as Jackson, but he was not insane, so you can't say that fame (or we) drove him to it. He wasn't a victim of anything but untreated mental illness. Had he not been rich, he surely would be in an asylum. Sorry to have to tell you this.

Oh and by the way, pop music is shallow, soulless crap, and the best pop singer in the world is by definition in the bottom ten percent of musicians as far as talent goes. It's a little like being a Country star.

Jackson changed his appearance, so if to you that means he "changed his race...", then it only proves that you subscribe to an illusion as being something real, and therefore no more "sane" than you regard Jackson.

Elvis also died with large amounts of physician-prescribed drugs in him, just as Jackson apparently did, and also lived as a recluse, so your comparison is just as delusional as the first statement.

Anyone who develops the ability to attract big money is soon surrounded by sharks and parasites, examples abound from music, sports, politics and business, and no one has survived un-scarred by the actions of such people. You condemn those who fall victim to an environment you cannot even begin to understand, or create, let alone survive.

As for pop being "soulless crap" as you put it, it is your fault.

You did not support live music, you did not spend money on music that was not "soulless", and there is a lot of it out there. You might have even bought stock in companies who select only the lowest common denominator of music to promote. You listened to radio and and watched TV stations that refused to allow actual artists to promote their work, even those who refused to play music if the band was not of a particular ethnic background. You responded to the advertising on such outlets, thereby justifying the practices of such entities.

Now you dare to post a complaint about the quality of artistry?

Don't forget, at one point, Miles Davis was "pop", as the word is short for "popular", and if you wish to include Jackson, who created his work with the likes of Stevie Wonder and Quincy Jones as "soulless" then not only have you no idea of the meaning of the word, and will find almost an entire planet that disagrees with your arrogant assumption.

To albert571

I am an independent music producer, composer, and musician, and have been for most of my 51 years, with works published in many countries around the world, so I believe myself qualified to post this reply to your ignorant post.

Michael was a gifted artist, who was separated from his brothers by promoters who could earn more profit from him as a single, and also because without his brothers to watch over him, was easier to manipulate and control.

But as far as talent goes, when you can sing melody and/or harmony, and play an instrument while dancing even halfway as well as any of the Jacksons, then and only then are you even remotely qualified to speak on the matter of talent.

It is your obvious lack of understanding about what went into the Jackson 5's performance preparation, what work each had to do to master their roles as part of a team that changed modern music, that reveals you to be basically an unlearned person commenting on that about which you have no knowledge.
Until then, best not comment on that which you obviously do not understand

My gosh, how old is Joe now, 80-something? I wonder if he feels any guilt for being so harsh when the boys were growing up?

What a nasty and thoughtless thing to say, albert571, at a sad time like this. My heart goes out to the Jackson family, and especially to his 3 children. Michael was one of a kind and he was taken much too soon.
