New Nixon Tapes Show Watergate "Game Plan"

(AP)  Fateful moments from the Watergate scandal that destroyed Richard Nixon's presidency are brought to light in a new collection of papers and tape recordings from that time.

Materials released by the Nixon Presidential Library on Tuesday show aides trying to head off a U.S. constitutional crisis and save a presidency after Nixon fired the Watergate special prosecutor and forced out the two top Justice Department officials in October 1973.

That crisis is known as the Saturday Night Massacre.

A memo from that episode, by Nixon adviser Kenneth Cole, outlines a "game plan" for survival.

The idea: Convince lawmakers that prosecutor Archibald Cox wanted an "unending crisis of the body politic" and needed to be removed. That did not work.

I was a young man during Nixon's two terms and even though I was a Democrat, I voted for him both times. Why? The times demanded a hard nosed and hard man as President.

Even though Nixon was a "crook" he did have many great accomplishments. If Watergate had not happened, he would be ranked in the top 10 Presidents.

All of the above notwithstanding, the great mystery of the day was, why did not Nixon burn all of the tapes and claim national security when the word got out of their existance? Had he done that, all of the GOP Senators/Representatives plus many Democrats would have gone along with that. For some unexplained reason(s), he kept them and they eventually became his downfall. BTW,many prominent folks in his "inner circle" did urge their destruction very early on. He should have listened to them.

This reasoning is one of reason the US is a declining power. Cover-ups will be the destruction of this nation. May the Lord help up from these people.

To destroy them would have been worst then getting caught because in the end it would have come out and that is against the law as well.

I too liked Nixon but all the good he did was over shawdowed by the wrong. And you can not make up for it, plus Nixon was smart but he was so afraid that every one was plotting against him that was his downfall.

I mean look he won by a landslide and yet he still though everyone was out to get him. What a waste!

You would we think that after Nixon, we would still believe in conspiracy theories.

But we don't and neither does the mass-media, when that's how they caught Nixon, a couple of journalists had a 'conspiracy theory'.

It's one of the British's faovorite accomplishment; to marginialize conspiracy theories so they are free to conspire all they want .

It's disgusting, we have no alert-system within ourselves to wake us up to the NWO and 'globalization', British-style 'free trade', BIG BANK BAILOUTS, and worthless derivatives and credit-default swaps.
