Parker, Broderick Welcome Twin Girls

Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick are the proud parents of twin girls delivered by a surrogate mother, a publicist said Tuesday.

The girls were born Monday afternoon at an Ohio hospital, publicist Simon Halls said. Marion Loretta Elwell Broderick weighed 5 pounds and 11 ounces (2.5 kilograms), and Tabitha Hodge Broderick weighed 6 pounds (2.7 kilograms).

Hodge and Elwell are family names on Parker's side, Halls said.

"The babies are doing beautifully and the entire family is over the moon," Halls said in a statement.

Jennifer Moss, author of "The One-in-a-Million Baby Name Book" and founder of BabyNames.com, weighed in on the babies names, giving Marion Loretta Elwell a C-minus grade and Tabitha Hodge an A.

"It's interesting that they used the traditionally male spelling of Marion, rather than the female spelling Marian," she said. "Either way, it's a very dated name from the early 20th century and has not come back into style for either gender. The name Loretta is from the same time period. They did, however, keep in line with the current trend of using family surnames within baby names, Elwell and Hodge both being branches of the Parker family tree."

Whitney Walker, co-author of "The Perfect Baby Name" and a consultant for ThePerfectBabyName.com, gave both twins names a D grade.

"Marion and Broderick both have R sounds, and Tabitha and Broderick both have B sounds, which helps make them more memorable and pleasing to the ear. Marion and Tabitha both have prominent short A sounds to tie them together a bit, too," Walker said. "But those middle names don't help. We're all for honoring ancestors with middle names, but the whole string has to flow together, so perhaps they should have picked some feminine first names from the family tree instead."

Finally, Bruce Lanskey, author of "100,000-Plus Baby Names," gave Marion a B-minus and Tabitha a B.

"Marion has two middle names: Loretta and Elwell. Tabitha only has one: Hodge. If you have kids, you know that they can complain all day about something they think isn't fair," he said. "In my opinion, giving one twin two middle names and the other twin only one middle name is a decision that produces an asymmetrical situation that may not sit right with the girls - or with people who read the birth announcement."

Parker, the 44-year-old star of the TV show and film "Sex and the City" had complained last month to "Access Hollywood" that the surrogate's telephone and computer had been hacked into, and that the woman had received threats.

Authorities are also investigating whether two Ohio police chiefs burglarized the surrogate's home in the eastern Ohio town of Martins Ferry so they could sell photos and other information to a tabloid.

The burglars were allegedly after "pictures, phone message, all those things" at the home of the surrogate, Michelle Ross, a law enforcement official told The Associated Press last week, speaking on condition of anonymity because no charges had been filed.

Earlier Tuesday, CBS affiliate WTRF reported that the babies were born at East Ohio Regional Hospital in Martins Ferry, Ohio, and that Broderick and Parker were at the hospital with the surrogate. A spokeswoman for the hospital would not comment Tuesday on reports that the twins were born there.

Parker and Broderick, her 47-year-old husband and fellow actor, confirmed in April that they were expecting twins via a surrogate. They also have a 6-year-old son, James Wilkie Broderick.
