(CBS)  Jon Gosselin, star of TLC reality show "Jon & Kate Plus 8," is apartment hunting, according to Gawker.com -- without his wife.

Gosselin reportedly spent Friday looking at apartments in New York City's Upper West Side. Gawker reported Gosselin checked out an apartment at Trump Place, owned by mogul Donald Trump.

But as CBS News correspondent Terrell Brown reported on The Early Show Monday, the space he is said to have seen is a small, luxury apartment, rumored to cost $3,200 a month with only 700 square feet of space.

So, can eight kids really fit?

"Where are they all going to sleep?" said New Yorker Zach Rebeckoff. "How could you fit eight kids in a one-bedroom?"

Jon's apartment hunting comes after the Gosselins publicized a major announcement for fans last Wednesday. In a 30-second promo for a special, hour-long edition of the TLC show slated to run Monday night, Kate says the two of them have made some "life-changing decisions" that will affect their famous family, adding she hopes the choices will "bring each of us some peace."

So does this all spell the end of Jon and Kate's 10-year marriage?

TLC isn't revealing what the news will be, but there are reports it could be that the couple is separating or divorcing.

"Sources and family members have told us that Jon, for months now, has been living in the garage apartment, and that they were very interested in having separate lives," Natalie Thomas, US Magazine deputy news editor, told CBS News, "...So now sources are telling us back at home that he is looking for a new place, and that he will be moving out."

The ongoing questions about child treatment and the show may be even more unsettled if Jon decides to take up residence in the small apartment.

This "announcement special" is offensive. Divorce is a rotten horrible thing, and TLC and these two clowns, who are failures as parents, are going along with this circus. Tears for the kids, they're the true losers. And don't think for a minute that any Kate + 8 show will be a representation of single motherhood. With all the handlers, nannies, and money, it will be a total sham.

I appreciate your opinion but to say that they failed as parents is pretty harsh. I have failed as a parent many times, now I do agree that the kids are the ones that lose. I believe where the couple failed was in their marriage. Many of us marrieds with children forget that the family starts with the husband and wife. I am so sad because I wanted that family to with their struggles one at a time. And you know, they had nannies, money, and help from others to make their marriage priority, but instead they settled for the "me" instead of "Jon & Kate" therefore they failed as a couple.

I believe I speak for many in America when I say 'Who cares what you guys do to yourselves. You can both jump off a cliff because you are an embarassment to real mothers and fathers everywhere. You are both self centered and selfish individuals who used the media to promote your wily ways.' It is clear the only ones who have suffered are those dear kids. If I had any ability, I would have your children removed from your custody until you two children get your act together. Shame on you for using (prostituting and pimping) your children for your own financial gain.

Good Ridance John and Kate I am so proud of putting your selves first and trying to make things work for the kids and family. I hope this show is canceled, this would be the best thing for the kids.

Maybe Jon is going back to work in the city. He would be crazy to commute to the city, therefore, an apartment. He has said he wanted to go back to work. I bet the show has opened up doors for him as far as job offers. Perhaps Kates book tour is coming to an end and it a great time for him to further his career.....

Jon and Kate what on earth are you thinking? There is a little nation to be looked after, they need both parents for this huge undertaking, and they need parents who know and understand them. I sure hope they don't separate and especially not divorce!! I'm sick of hearing how the adults need to be happy for the sake of the children. Well damn it suck it up and stay together for the sake of the children and find your happiness in parenting, marriage, family and hard work!

Where is the church family in this? Oh I sure hope their closest friends keep this couple accountable to work things out and give all they have for the sake of family. Really who in their right mind is going to accept Jon or Kate with all the kids?? If the original couple has had their troubles, what makes them think that a third party will help the situation. "If" there are other people involved they are fools and only wanting the fame part and have taken advantage of the situation. Ha! the grass is always greener on the other side. I can't imagine Kate staying calm the first time her lover boy disciplines her children. Can you? And Jon really can he handle all the kids all day for days. Don't think so. Jon and Kate, grow up and do it for the kids! and go back to the original plan for better or for worse till death do you part. Then at that point the kids know it was death and not the confusion of a premature death ... divorce.
