Poll: 1 In 4 S. African Men Admit To Rape
(AP)
South Africa's Medical Research Council says that more than a quarter of men it surveyed admitted that they have raped a woman.
South Africa has the highest number of reported rapes in the world. Most experts say this is a result of its violent past and the legacy of apartheid, which often forced men to live in single-sex hostels away from their families.
The survey said that some 27 percent of men interviewed said they had raped a woman, and that half of these had raped more than once. Nearly one in 10 took part in gang rapes.
Political parties reacted with shock Friday to the findings, saying the government must do far more to tackle rape and other violent crime.
