New York City is now the new road rage capital of the United States, according to an annual survey released Tuesday.

Miami had taken the title the previous three years. New York was ranked third in the 2008 survey. Following the Big Apple in 2009 are: Dallas/Fort Worth, Detroit, Atlanta and Minneapolis/St. Paul, according to AutoVantage.

Portland, Ore. was labeled the most courteous city, with Cleveland, Baltimore, Sacramento and Pittsburgh also in the top five.

Careless driving, such as tailgating or talking on cell phones, impatient and inconsiderate drivers were among the top reasons respondents said caused road rage.

The survey was conducted over telephone between Jan. 8 and March 24, 2009 and encompasses the responses of 2,518 participants. The margin of error is +/- 2 percent, according to AutoVantage.

No doubt, the drivers in Miami that had previously earned that title for them were NY drivers on vacation.

Come drive in TJ.

Was each city surveyed at the same time of day? I can tell you that 5:00 traffic (I've just finished work, now I can go home and relax) is a lot more relaxed than 6:00 traffic (I'm late, I'm hungry, I'm tired and my dinner is getting cold).

Maryland has a high population of drivers who are slow and drive stupid impeding and causing road rage, they don't seem to have any self realization or consideration. They will go slow in the fast lane on a two lane freeway, build up a line of cars behind them a mile long while the slow right lane actually goes faster than the passing lane, they are always not paying attention, talking on cell phone, smoking etc. They don't seem to get pass to the left and then move over. It is really very simple and leads to efficient traffic with good spacing.

Getting out of the left lane is a simple concept, but certain drivers just don't get it, most likely because they lack common sense and/or intelligence.

The big issue in Miami is more the blue hairs, the snow bird Canadians and tourists from South America who seemingly got their driver's license out of the cereal box. Honking horns in Miami? That went out years ago... All it took was a couple of honking-inspired shootings and everyone is pretty much quiet now.
Also, if the survey was conducted over the last six months or so, well, let's just say recession traffic patterns have eased congestion drastically, which one would think could be behind more relaxed driving conditions.

I agree with "armyoftwelve" I was in Boston for a week and the drivers there are awful! Horns honking constantly! People in their cars screaming at you! I couldn't wait to get out of there!

I still think Boston drivers are the worst.

I still think Miami is worse, I've never seen so many non-drivers. And I learned to drive in Manhatten.
