Do Obama's Job Creation Numbers Add Up?

By
Wyatt Andrews
(CBS)  President Barack Obama has made it his goal to create or save hundreds of thousands of jobs during this economic downturn, and this week he said his administration is well on the way to doing it.

But, do his numbers add up? CBS News correspondent Wyatt Andrews offers a reality check.

It seems to be the presidents favorite number these days - those 150,000 jobs he says are clear numeric proof that his national stimulus plan is working.

It sounds like a claim the administration has actually counted up those jobs

Here's the reality. Those 150,000 jobs are a guess, based on a 16-page White House document, which uses what's called "macroeconomic methodology" to give the president a formula for the jobs that should be created, not a tally of jobs actually created.

"There's no way that an economist, no matter how good, can say, 'This stimulus package created this many jobs,'" said Maya MacGuineas, an economist and president of the non-partisan Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget. "It's just a jump that you can't make with any certainty "

Then there's Mr. Obama and Vice President Joe Biden's claim that the stimulus has "already saved or created" a certain number of jobs - basically an assertion that in the 150,000 jobs, there are also jobs that have been saved, workers that have not laid off.

But the reality is you can't count layoffs that don't happen.

"It would be absolutely impossible to measure with any precision how many people have kept their jobs," MacGuineas said.

The president's top economic adviser readily agrees those 150,000 jobs come from an estimate. So why does the president present the figures as fact?

Because, she argues, the economy is recovering, and the estimate is based on history.

"When you have a tax cut like we've had, when you have the kind of spending changes like we've had - traditionally that's created a large number of jobs, so that's where we're getting that number," said Christina Romer, chair of Mr. Obama's Council of Economic Advisers.

Clearly the stimulus is creating jobs and preventing layoffs, but how many jobs can be traced to the stimulus will be part of the president's legacy. One day he might be proven right. Right now, that's an estimate.

"macroeconomic methodology" also known as "wedontknow whatthehellweredoing"

Tell me would any of you fly on a plane or ride in a car that was created using the mathmatics estimating that is used to figure these numbers for jobs? Talk about hocus pocus and funny math all rolled into one. These people will spin their words to where they can not only not be wrong they can never be challenged for validity. Much like government annual report on the amount of illegal drugs confiscated off the street. They usually say something like "we got 23% of the drugs entering the USA". Oh really 23% huh and you know this based on what since drugs are illegal and you have no real idea of the actual amount that we even sent. Talk about pulling numbers out of thin air and your backside. $100 for anyone that can tell me what 42% of the number I have in my head is between 1 and 1000000000000. Please it is getting ridiculous and insulting the way they use numbers today. Always consider the source and what they stand to gain. Then also keep in mind these are the same geniuses that are calculating how much we will save with Universal HC and how to fund SS and get rid of the deficit and tighten the spending belts. What loon from either of the 2 sides of the isle actually believes that? Wake UP!

oh, I know. These are jobs at McDonalds and other fast food outlets. Great jobs, great careers for all the liberals. These places you don't need any intelligence.

Well, if you are sitting in the GLASS BOWL of Washington, D.C. it might appear so TO HIM. But, those of us in the rest of the country KNOW how large the lunch lines are getting and how many city councils are RAISING taxes and utilities' bills to stay afloat. We also know in our state the unemployment compensation budget will run out by end of August...never happened before in history of the state. SO, DO THE JOBS' NUMBERS ADD UP? NOPE, not any more than the EMPTY promises. Duh?

Wyatt Andrews, where in the Republican dirty pond water were you when Bush and Cheney were spittin' out one lie and distortion after another. I never read one report by you questioning anything about Bush propaganda.

Amazing how all the newspapers and news networks are all of a sudden "journalists seeking the truth."

What you all our is a sorry pack of shameful cowards who bowed to eight years of a Republican administration that dictated the news to all U.S. media. Save for some very brave people like Ms. Rhodes and Ms. Huffington, there was no serious questioning of the Bush policies and actions by prominent U.S. media. Your lack of backbone during those eight horrific years will be in the History books, my yellow tinted "journalists."

The Republican CEOs and top 1% have shipped all our manufacturing jobs to China, all our computer jobs to India, and they hire illegals through subcontracting for everything else!

What are Republican's plans for creating millions of new high paying American jobs?!?!?!?!

Where are the jobs? I know so many qualified people out of work right now and our liar leader says that he is saving jobs. What a crock! Nice going Dems! And that's right; alot of you won't admit that you voted for him. I totally understand. His salvation is that he has always talked a good story. That's definitely one thing that he has over Bush. He keeps himself in the news singing his own praises and the stupid media eats it up.
