Real Reasons Miss Calif. Got The Boot
(CBS)
Carrie Prejean got another message from Donald Trump on Wednesday -- a message many have heard before her: "You're fired!"
Carrie Prejean, the reigning Miss California was let go, according to Trump, because she "failed to honor her commitments" to the organization.
Prejean, known for her controversial comments on same-sex marriage during the 2009 Miss USA competition, has appeared in headlines time and again, from her partially pageant-paid breast implants to semi-nude photos that surfaced.
Trump, in a press conference in May, publicly stood behind Prejean and kept her on as Miss California. But now, he's changed his mind.
On The Early Show Thursday, Keith Lewis, the executive director of Miss California USA -- who says he asked Trump to let Prejean go, and the new Miss California, Tami Farrell, discussed Prejean's departure.
Lewis told co-anchor Julie Chen Prejean missed "tens and tens" of appearances and was "difficult to work with."
Lewis said Prejean told competition officials she couldn't attend events because she had other things to do, and declined to appear in Hollywood.
"We came to a meeting of the minds in New York; we said we were putting it behind us, we're moving forward, we were going to get back on track," Lewis said, "and that was really far from what happened."
Lewis called Prejean's relationship with pageant officials "combative."
Prejean told entertainment Website TMZ.com she was "shocked" when she learned the news of her dismissal, and said she thinks the political debate is to blame and that pageant officials wanted her out.
But Lewis told Chen the decision was based entirely on her not being available for appearances.
"It was just very difficult for us, and we tried to meet halfway, and it was obvious that wasn't going to happen," Lewis said. "And finally, there was a point when the organization really had to stand up and say, 'You know what? It's time for us to move on and get back to the business of beauty." '
Lewis told Chen he hadn't heard from Prejean personally. He said everything was happening through attorneys.
Lewis said her appearances for the anti-same-sex marriage group National Organization for Marriage "kind of created this controversy."
He said Prejean didn't seem to want the crown.
"I think if you tell your boss, 'I'm not gonna do the job, I'm gonna do whatever I want, you can't tell me what I'm gonna do,' I think that you expect that you're boss is gonna say to you, 'You know what? You're probably not supposed to be in this job anymore." '
Farrell, the runner-up who took Prejean's place, said she's ready to assume her title, and "is honored to represent California."
When Chen asked her what she's going to be doing differently than Prejean, Farrell said she's going to be making the appearances. She added she even filled in for Prejean when she missed some dates.
Lewis told Chen he thinks Prejean is going to be successful in whatever she chooses to do, and the pageant is going continue to be successful, largely due to the spotlight Prejean helped put on it.
