Palin Vs. Letterman: Getting Nasty

By
CBSNews
(CBS)  On Monday's "Late Show with David Letterman," the comedian came out swinging, saying, "One awkward moment for Sarah Palin at the Yankee game. During the seventh inning, her daughter was knocked up by Alex Rodriguez!"

It turned out that many people took offense at the joke, especially the Alaska governor and former GOP vice presidential candidate and her family.

In a statement, she said, "Laughter incited by sexually perverted comments made by a 62-year-old male celebrity aimed at a 14-year-old girl is .. disgusting."

On Wednesday, Letterman tried to quiet the controversy, joking, "I am hardly a celebrity. I am 62, yes!"

He insisted the joke was targeted at 18-year-old Bristol Palin, a single mother, and not 14-year-old Willow Palin, who was the Palin daughter at the ballgame.

"These are not jokes made about her 14-year-old daughter," Letterman stressed. "I would never, never make jokes about raping or having sex of any description with a 14-year-old girl."

Aside from that remark, Letterman was unapologetic about having fun at Palin's expense.

Still cracking jokes about the Sarah Palin issue, huh Dave?

Yes, there he goes making fun of the "Fire David Letterman Rally", citing the top ten things overheard at the event.

As far as I'm concerned, nothing is off limits for this man when it comes to cracking a joke and any apology he made was as thin as paper and worth about as much.

By doing what he did it allows him to try and gain points back with a laugh. He doesn't really care about the Palin joke issue. And he just proved it.

Letterman is as low as they come.

Obama took his 11 year old daughter to a Yankee game and during the seventh inning, "his daughter was knocked up by Alex Rodriguez." FUNNY??

No, because the joke doesn't make sense as none of Obama's underage children got pregnant, nor do the Obama's children have hipocritical parents who teach abstinence, except in their own familiy.

Letterman has never been funny...and yes he has always been a donkey; but Sarah Palin knows herself he wasn't referring to her 14yr. old...she just wants some attention. She needs to find a more useful way to get. All she wants is sympathy from people.

Since Letterman claims he knew that the joke was tasteless and unacceptable BEFORE he ever told the joke, why did he tell it in the first place?

The answer is simple. He is an unclassy, bitter liberal that can't stand the traditional values that Sarah Palin represents, and he wanted to strike out in this joke to be mean and make her look like a fool. He was doing his best in that joke to tarnish her public persona.

Remember, 2012 is coming and he knows she will be coming back with more power than ever.

PALIN 2012!

I do not doubt that she loves her children. I think that her ambition leads her to use them for her purposes. I mean she could have made a less theatrical condemnation and kept Willow out of the equation. This way she publicized her daughter. Something a mother would not do

I'm going to repeat again what I've said many times before! What is she supposed to do? Lock them in a closet?

You don't even know the constitution of the United States! If you did you'd know that public figures have the same rights as anyone else! Sarah Palin and Bristol did not give up their constitutional rights when they became public figures!

Well the Supreme court has already decided this issue in New york v Sullivan, in which the defendant has to prove actual malice on the part of the reporting person. So it seems like I am correct.

No,mrzerato, you are not correct because saying that someone had sex with someone when it's not true, even when you are joking, is malicious! When "comedians" tell that kind of joke they know very well that they are harming someone's reputation. They tell them deliberately to bring that person down and ruin their reputation! Letterman and all the rest of the late night "comedians" know exactly what they are doing and it's time they were called on it!

Something else that is malicious, too, is the constant, relentless comments that people write in these comment boards claiming that Trig Palin is Bristol's child when they know very well that it's a lie and the ugly, filthy names that she's been called! That is also slander and libel and it's been published! Anything that is written online is published because it has been made publicly known!

No they are Sarah's daughters just as much as Bristol is and she loves them just as much as you love your children! Also their names are Willow and Piper! She also has two sons. Their names are Trac and Trig and they are more than just background to her too!

So, pirate lady, did you come on here and call for Jay Leno's firing when he made essentially the same joke, during the campaign?
Posted by nanc12 at 1:06 PM : Jun 15, 2009

I should have and so should all of the rest of us conservative republicans! I'm going to say again that the late night so-called "comedians" need to be reined in and their slanderous "jokes" should be stopped! They have gone too far! They have crossed the line. Their "jokes" hurt people! They've crossed the line over to nothing but slander, libel, and insults! Joking on camera about a entertainer or polititician's children is especially low and wrong! They should be fired immediately for that and then be pulled up in court and made to prove in court what they have said!

They are stage props used by Palin to campaign. Just the background for her.
