Cops: Man Used Craigslist To Hire Rapist

(AP)  A North Carolina husband used the online advertising service Craigslist to enlist a man to rape his wife in the couple's home, police said Wednesday.

The 25-year-old Kannapolis man faces first-degree rape and other charges. The Associated Press, which generally does not identify victims of sexual assault, is not naming the man to avoid identifying his wife.

His wife called 911 early Sunday morning and said a man with a knife raped her in the bedroom of their home in Kannapolis, about 25 miles northeast of Charlotte, authorities said. Her husband was in the room, police said. Their two young children were also home, but were unaware of what was happening, authorities said.

The husband sought someone in the ads to come to his home and have sex with his wife using "scare tactics," police said. It was without her knowledge or consent, police said.

Authorities are still investigating the identity of the man who attacked the woman and it wasn't known if the husband paid him to do it. The woman was not seriously injured, but was treated at a hospital and released.

Investigators turned their suspicions to the husband after his statement didn't add up and because there were no signs the attacker broke into the home. The husband was jailed Wednesday on $200,000 bond.

"We share the public's horror that such a crime was committed, and our heart goes out to the victim," said Craigslist spokeswoman Susan MacTavish Best.

The online classified site had been criticized for its "erotic services" section, which Craigslist agreed to do away with last month after a Boston medical student, deemed "the Craigslist killer," was charged with killing a woman he met on the site.

A Kansas City, Mo., man was sentenced last month to 29 years in prison for raping a woman who advertised in the section.

New form of entertainment the criag list, be as diabolical as you want. How can anyone advertise for rape of wife and be legal, and Craig List which publish it must be liable for the incident and criminal charges should be brought against Craig list. After all crime is a crime and helping a criminal do a crime is a crime. One cannot advertise sex with a second party without consent of the second party. Without permission of second party how do they advertise.

Craig list certainly not innocent and they must watch what they allow on their site, or face the consequences. It is absolutely liable for person

I agree with you also, but I do not feel that Craig's list is at fault. This type of thing has gone on for year's. If he had not found the guy on the list, he would have found someone somewhere to do it. Thank Christ that she was able to get to a hospital and report the incident before he could have talk her down. Then again it sounds like he was pretending he was not there.

This is a trick that people play to gain control over another. I am surprised that he didn't step in half way through to 'save' her, and be her 'Hero" for life.

Craigslist is a wonderful site - a pity that like any popular site, it's abused by some. But I've used it recently to get a new roommate - everyone who has contacted me has been a good person, I've gotten the best candidates from Craigslist.

The nice thing is that with everything so trackable, it'll be easy to prove the case.

This is a sick act and Both men need to answer the courts! No person has the right to rape or hurt another person ever, no excuses please! The punishment should fit the crime, and I'm sure there are alot of convicted men waiting for guy's like these to arrive so they can repay there debts (now this is just in their minds) for crimes they did.

CBS is so into getting "Craigslist" that they would continue to label anyone commiting crimes using the sight as dubiously Craigslist.....
My advice to the authors of the story is to go look at other websites and quit harassing one particular site......I'm sure they'll find some other people doing the same, but these guys have it out for Craigslist.......

So you're saying the U.S. is crime-free north of the Mason-Dixon line? May I remind you of the Craigs List killer in New England.
