Better Summer Buying -- Through Timing
(CBS)
Getting the best deals this summer may all be a matter of timing -- knowing what to buy, when.
Amy Goodman, a senior editor of All You magazine, shared pointers on The Early Show Wednesday on taking advantage of retailers' sales this season.
Goodman told Early Show co-anchor Maggie Rodriguez that, in June, swimsuits, summer clothing and lingerie are all on sale, as well as tool and tech items for grads and for Dad, for Father's Day.
"This is the time of year to get Dad his favorite things to get out there in the yard and working," Goodman said.
July is the month to get fit, according to Goodman, who says you can get a deep discount on gym memberships. She explained that it's a slow month for gyms. She said this is the best time for you to get a couple free weeks or free month, or even a discount on your overall monthly payment. She added it's a good time to get a membership because of the recession, too, because gyms are still trying to reach their membership quotas.
Another summer steal in July is furniture. Goodman said the changeover to new merchandise in preparation for fall is done in July, so it's a good time to pick up the old models, which will likely be on sale.
August is the final hurrah for all the big yard equipment, Goodman said. You can get great deals, she pointed out, on air-conditioners, lawn mowers, and other yard equipment.
August also means back to school, which means fall fashion, school supplies, computers, and camping equipment will also be on sale, according to Goodman.
With school supplies, she recommended buying your general supplies early, and waiting for the rest until teachers give advance lists of supplies kids will need. Goodman said by waiting, you can get deeper discounts as the month progresses.
With also recommended holding off to buy computers, saying buyers should wait until a new model has been advertised to get last year's model at a better price. But thazt method's not just for August. Goodman said there really isn't a set time to get the best deals on a computer.
As the camping season ends as cool weather comes in, the deals heat up on camping equipment. Goodman said August is a good time to buy for your Labor Day trip, but also for stocking up for next year.
