Dozens Killed In Western Afghan Battle

(AP)  A battle in a militant-controlled region of western Afghanistan killed 30 insurgents and nine Afghan soldiers, while a roadside bomb in the country's north wounded an Afghan governor, officials said Saturday.

Violence elsewhere in the country killed 17 others, part of a spate of attacks that killed 56 people over all.

The battle in Badghis province began Friday and continued into Saturday. Afghan troops supported by international forces killed 30 militants in the Bala Murghab district, a region where the Afghan government has little control. Nine Afghan soldiers died in the battle, and four "disappeared," the Ministry of Defense said. The ministry did not elaborate.

The roadside bomb detonated on the main highway in Kunduz province, and shattered glass slightly wounded Gov. Mohammad Omar, said his spokesman, Ahmad Sami Yawar. He blamed the "enemies of peace and security," a phrase that commonly refers to militants.

Taliban and other militants often target Afghan officials. Northern Afghanistan was once thought to be a peaceful enclave unaffected by rampant Taliban violence in the country's south and east. But militants have increased attacks in the area in the last two years as the insurgency has spread across the country.

President Barack Obama is sending an additional 21,000 U.S. troops to the country this summer to bolster the roughly 40,000 already there.

In other violence, five militants were killed in an operation in the Musa Qala region of southern Helmand province on Friday, the Interior Ministry said. Six militants were killed during a battle with police in the western province of Farah on Friday, said Raouf Ahmadi, a police spokesman. Two would-be suicide attackers were shot and killed in Herat, also in the west, on Friday, he said.

In Kandahar province - the spiritual birthplace of the Taliban - a roadside bomb killed four civilians on Friday, said deputy provincial police chief Abdullah Khan. Militants lay bombs in hopes of hitting Afghan or NATO forces. But most bombs kill or wound Afghan civilians.

Russia could not have forgotten how the Americans taught mujahiidins how to skin Russian soldiers alive. It wont be long before Russia is going to be with Afghans.

The Afghans could never have won that war on their own. If not for American intervention, Afghanistan would be a former Soviet puzzle piece, tossed aside when the Soviet Union fell.
In other words, worse than they are now. Posted by DizzysDaddy

AS I SEE IT --- Mike "Mainer Mike" Brown, The AS I SEE IT Guy.

I see what your saying, DizzysDaddy, but the Afghans were the ones who fought off the Soviets. Sure they had help from America. But they defeated Russia, they did the dirty work.

And I'll bet any money that they would have forced out the U.S.S.R. even without our help, because Afghans don't stop fighting.

Battles in Afghanistan will never end. Heck, the Soviets, who ruled this war-torn nation with an iron fist in the 80's, couldn't fight off the insurgents. So why should the American public think that our military can do it?

Wouldn't it have been nice if George Bush actually thought of this before we invaded?

Intelligents and people of conscience should note that sometimes called "militants", "insurgents" "Talibans" and even "freedom Fighters" not too long ago are simply indigenous people who are rising to protect themselves from invaders, occupiers, angels of peace, and brutal regimes. This is a war against indigenous people of a land, the Common Man. Those people have inheritant sense of duty to protect their lands from "invaders and corruption." It is no different if Russians with arms and "hangover" came in to rural areas of America looking for fugitives, and Minutemen rise up in arms in apparent intoxication in the name of patriotism.

It is cowardice to prize oneself by bombing people in their mudhouses, and deceptive and self-delusional to paint the picture as some sort of "Angel of Peace Operation."

"You are fighting in dark, though with flashlights, but against invisible men."

Sorry. liberals, Charlie Wilson did his meddling prior to G.W. Bush. Charlis Wilson was the man who set things up for the Taliban. Bush was the man that liberated Afghanistan from the Taliban. If Charlie Wilson had kept his nose out oft, most likely the Russians would have the situation under control.

War with North Korea is inevitable. Americans LOVE war! This country cannot function unless it is at war. The World is our enemy.

"Magnificent! Compared to war all other forms of human endeavor shrink to insignificance.
God help me, I do love it so! I love it m
