Sonia Sotomayor is confirmed by the Senate as the next Supreme Court justice with a vote of 68-31. Nine Republicans voted for her. The confirmation makes her the third woman and first Hispanic to serve on the court.
July 13, 2009
Sonia Sotomayor's Senate Judiciary Comittee confirmation hearings begin. The panel approved her on July 28, voting 13-6 in favor with only one Republican, Sen. Lindsay Graham, joining the Democrats to support her.
May 26, 2009
President Barack Obama nominates Sotomayor as the nation's first Hispanic Supreme Court justice, praising her as "an inspiring woman" with both the intellect and compassion to interpret the Constitution wisely.
