Mike Tyson's Daughter Critically Injured

Boxer's 4-Year-Old On Life Support; Strangled By Cable On Treadmill

Former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson arrives at the premiere of the documentary feature film "Tyson" in West Hollywood, Calif. on Thursday, April 16, 2009. Tyson's four-year-old daughter was critically injured in an accident involving a treadmill in his Phoneiz, Ariz. home, May 25, 2009.  (AP)

(AP)  Former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson's 4-year-old daughter is on life support after she was found with her neck on a treadmill cable Monday, Phoenix police said.

Police Sgt. Andy Hill said the "tragic accident" happened Monday morning at a Phoenix home when the girl's 7-year-old brother found her on a treadmill with her neck on a cable attached to the exercise machine.

The boy told the girl's mother, who had been cleaning in a separate room. The mother took the girl off the cable, called 911 and tried to revive her.

Responding officers and firefighters performed CPR on the girl as they rushed her to a nearby hospital, where she was in "extremely critical condition" and on life support, Hill said.

"Somehow she was playing on this treadmill, and there's a cord that hangs under the console - it's kind of a loop," Hill said. "Either she slipped or put her head in the loop, but it acted like a noose, and she was obviously unable to get herself off of it."

Hill said Tyson was in Las Vegas when the accident occurred but flew to Phoenix immediately after learning of the accident.

Tyson could not immediately be reached for comment. Calls to three of his representatives were either not returned or went unanswered.

Hill said everything in the investigation pointed to the incident being an accident. "There's nothing in the investigation that revealed anything suspicious," he said.

Hill said he had never seen an accident exactly like the one involving Tyson's daughter, but added that children have accidentally choked themselves on curtain cords in the past.

"When a child gets on life support it takes a while for a family to work through that process, deciding what to do," he said. "There still is hope for the child to come out of it."

He added that responding to calls involving children is an officer's most difficult duty.

"Those are the things that stay with you in your career," he said. "We always home for a miracle - not to have the worst happen to a child."

Your initial comment could, in fact, be taken as one of, if not the, stupidest post(s) ever on this particular CBS News Forum. The reasoning is simple. By conflating the tragedy that attends the imminent death of a 4-year-old child by "accident" or "misadventure," with her father's history of violence and criminal activity, in the Biblical sense of the quote, you have failed to display any understanding of the prevailing heuristic in this milieu, not once, but twice!

Therefore, Novamba takes the point and you, Sir (I assume) are indeed, stupid.

I AM JUST HAPPY MIKE WASN'T THERE BECAUSE IF HE WERE THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN PENNED ON HIM SOMEHOW, SOMEWAY. HE DID THE BEST THING BY NOT RESPONDING TO ANY QUESTIONS VIA HIMSELF OR HIS REPRESENTATIVE BECAUSE HE KNOWS FROM PAST EXPERIENCE HOW TWISTED PEOPLE ARE. I PRAY FOR YOUR FAMILY. THE SINS OF WHO FATHER YOU MUST MEAN MIKE TYSON REAL FATHER, DON'T FORGET HE WAS ADOPTED.....

It's a shame that karma has chosen this route. Four years old? I wouldn't leave my four year old alone. Nope, she even comes when I go to get laundry, use the rest room, get the mail etc. It's called parenting. There is a huge awareness campaign about kids and strangling. I guess he was off raping someone or biting someone to notice. I hope this little one recovers but back to him? I shudder at the thought.

You take a 4yo with you when you go to the restroom.... at home,as well? If so, then YOU are the one we should be watching out against. That could be considered indecent exposure in the presence of a child.

I can only imagine that either you have only one child and do nothing else all day, or that you are not telling the truth. Another possibility is that you have your child so cowed that she will not move without your permission.

Freedom and the innocence of our children is all that we really have left to treasure. The person who said :sins of the father; Well I guess if nothing never ever happened to them thier father must have been perfect. I know only of one perfect man that ever walked this planet. WE hung him on a cross. The Lord picks his flowers in his own way. I used to think in combat , that a lost man has nothing to lose so fkem kill them all . And i did my best to do just that. I wonder everyday why Im still here . The life expectancy of a door gunner was 9 days. I was one for 24 months.

The Mike Tyson I remember is the shy kid... 19... very soft spoken and eager to please fans. That Mike is still in there. I wish him and his daughter well and hope she recovers quickly from this tragic accident. I will be thinking of Mike and his family.

Your ignorance shows the problem with Public Education and the Bell curve (Nuff said? Sheesh!).

Let me dumb it down for you...

"The sins of the father" = **** rolls downhill

Oh dear. Illuminos, I believe you have failed to shed any "light" on the situation (despite your name) with your final tautology. I don't, in fact, get the impression that Novamba necessarily made a bad showing on the Bell Curve or, indeed, needed it to get through public education.

Your initial comment could, in fact, be taken as one of, if not the, stupidest post(s) ever on this particular CBS News Forum. The reasoning is simple. Truly tragic news. Thoughts and prayers go out for the young girl, Mike and his family.

I say the new movie 'Tyson' only last night, and saw him in the movie play-boxing with her when she was about 2. (She won.) You could tell he really loves her and his kids.

May she recover to 100%, quickly.

what the hell is wrong with you people? accidents happen as this one surely was... that cord I have seen many times at my friends houses and thought to myself that this was an accident waiting to happen, sure enough it did... Please respect this family and not try to put them through judgment. Not everything is always a crime. take care all and remember life is precious lets love one another and put the past in the past...

I am saddened to read this
and also must wonder if this is actually accident.
Something does not ring true in this story line.
I hope the male child is not following/modeling
his daddy's seething rage and hatred of the feminine.
sibling rivalry the hard way ?

Let's not jump the gun andad mouthing Mike, He is no saint but on the other hand he's had a tough childhood and did a compleat turn about and I think he's done as much for the sport as some of the other greats! I hope Mikes daughter is as strong willed as her father is and god gives her a chance at liveing a good long productive life, please give this child your prayers and the hate mongers that infest these comment boards need to take a heartfelt break. If Mike is reading all these comments I hope he knows there are still Tyson fans that that know the real Mike!

Children six and younger should be supervised constantly and never allowed to operate any machinery without an adult present.
