Photo Essay Singin' Susan Boyle Though she came in second place on "Britain's Got Talent," the singer has become a worldwide sensation
Her start was a little shaky, but Susan Boyle soon hit her stride singing "Memory" from the musical "Cats." She was clearly the people's favorite in the semifinals of the reality show Britain's Got Talent.
The competition ranged from the glamorous - violinist Su Son - to the bizarre - novelty act Darth Jackson that combines, you guessed it, Darth Vader and other "Star Wars" characters with the music of Michael Jackson.
But the result surprised no one: Susan Boyle again came out on top.
Six weeks ago, no one had heard of Susan Boyle.
Then a promise to her dying mother, led her onstage as a contestant on "Britain's Got Talent." Before she opened her mouth, she was just a frumpy Scottish lady.
Then suddenly she was a sensation - and that's putting it mildly....
Boyle has since attracted 60 million YouTube clicks.
As the youngest of nine children, who battled learning difficulties and never married, Susan Boyle has become - to her fans - walking, talking proof that anything's possible.
The sudden super-stardom fazed her a little at the outset. But Her friends say it hasn't gone to her head.
"Don't think you'll ever change Susan," one said.
In fact - it was a changed Susan we saw tonight. At least on the surface, with new hair, makeup and sequins. But underneath there was the same old down-to-earth lady from Scotland.
"I enjoyed every second, and I'd do it again," she told the judges.
She will do it again - next Saturday night for the grand finale and what Susan says is her dream - a chance to perform for the queen.

- She's got more guts than I do to take on the entertainment buisness. They are going to take her and try to change her bend her fold her until she is no longer regonizable.

- I was appalled when Mark Phillips referred to Susan Boyle as "DUMPY DIVA". Shame on him. She is a woman of worth and dignity and should be treated with the utmost respect

- Clowns...work hard and get some education. Then, you would appreciate her nomination.
Most Americans do not realized that immigrants have to work twise as much to get ahead. An then have more respect and loyalty for the US and it's institutions than the so called true Americans. - Reply to this comment

- Unfortunately, this will follow the same script as "American Idol" - she'll be the favorite all competition until it comes down to what everyone will refer to as "Susan Boyle and the runner-up" and shock the world when she loses to the gay glam-rock kid with the black fingernails.
What? You didn't think they were just going to let that runner-up stuff on "Idol" be it for him, did you? - Reply to this comment
- These phony "beauty experts" should leave her alone!

- I would rather read about Susan Boyle than some drug crazed freak eating his son's eyes or a woman drowning her 4 year old in the USA. She is living the dream and good on her! It is a talent contest not America's Next Top Model and Extreme Makeover for Pete's sake.

- Although I certainly hope Susan wins the talent contest, it's really a moot point. Some recording label ought to snap her up NOW and get busy on her debut CD. I'd certainly buy one. She's wonderful on so many levels and deserves every happiness. I do hope she is able to perform for the Queen.....I think it would be a night both her and Her Majesty would long remember. Cheers to you, Susan, from across the pond.

Since when did the rest of the world make the US responsible for preventing people from doing stupid things to each other? Hitler started off being Germany?s problem. But Germany soon made Hitler into everyone?s problem. No offense to the dearly deceased, but perhaps if your fellow citizens had stopped that maniac in time, your relatives might still be alive today. - Reply to this comment
- Susan Boyle's singing ability probably good enough to warrant some provincial stage musical roles. But after this ridiculous media hype is over she probably won't get them, because there are plenty of other women with voices just as good but who look better.

You are probably right. There was that Sandanavian guy who won the International Idol a couple of years ago, who was just as talented as Boyle, but unfortunately, even by his own admission, looked just like a troll. He never had a chance at a stage career either. - Reply to this comment
- hower4 How badly this speaks of you that you use this lady's moment of glory to be rude and insulting to all Americans. It's the only story we're interested in? How ignorant that is of you.
Idiot Americans? Remember, if it were not for the "idiot Americans" you'd be writing this in German. Fortunately, I know many people from the UK and know that people like you are the exception and not the rule. Hide yourself in shame, you are a despicable representative of a great nation.
Susan Boyle, good on you, lassie. May you achieve all of your dreams. - Reply to this comment
- hower4 this is a humann interest story... It's a feel good story. It is positive and nice. Maybe oneday you will learn to be positive and nice too. The only idiot I can see here is you! And as a fellow Brit, that makes me sad for you. Please get a grip!

Her talent is borne out of love.
You are beautiful.

- I just watched the segment on the virtual makeover. Wow, I'm flabbergasted.
H-e-l-l-o! Leave her be. Can't you tell that part of her appeal is how down-to-earth (and dowdy) she is. Yes, her singing is exceptional, but people embrace her too because of how out-of-the-mainstream she is.
It's fine to suggest she gets a makeover, but to conduct one LIKE THIS and without Susan's consent... doesn't ring right. No wonder so many women have poor self esteem issues, and are often traipsing off to plastic surgeons.
I am sure she is already being advised in this regard, and she'll do whatever she chooses.
Oh yeah... she's good... but you are only interested in making her BETTER... yeah, right. [Rolls eyes]. - Reply to this comment
