Top gifts for dads
sure, no dad would mind if you picked up a large-screen HDTV or $2,000 surround system for him. However, chances are that's not quite in your budget. So instead of making a list of dad's ultimate dream picks, we decided to go with something a little more plausible and keep things relatively affordable. However, that doesn't mean there isn't an HDTV on the list. It's just not a 52-incher.
Logitech Harmony One universal remote
The relationship between man and remote control is a complicated one. Logitech's One may not be quite as good as the fantasy clicker featured in Adam Sandler's "Click," but it's our current Editors' Choice for universal remotes.
Monster Turbine earphones
Monster's AV cables may be overpriced, but its Turbine earphones are a decent value. With a combination of impressive bass and clarity, they may be the best in-ear headphones for $150.
Sony PlayStation 3
Dad needs a Blu-ray player and the kids need to graduate from the Wii. Buy a PS3 and everybody stays home happy (except Xbox 360 fans).
Canon T1i
We always have trouble deciding whether we like Canon or Nikon dSLRs better--and we probably never will decide. If dad already has some Nikon lenses, go with the Nikon D5000. However, if he has Canon lenses--or no lenses at all--think about the T1i. Canon's new dSLR is its first entry-level model that also shoots HD video.
Kodak Zx1
Yeah, we know, Flip minicamcorders is kind of ruling the category at the moment. But Flips are for sissies. Real dads want a more rugged YouTube-friendly model so they can film their off-road adventures--or just not worry about dropping the thing and breaking it. Like the Flip UltraHD and MinoHD, the Kodak Zx1 is an "HD" model that features rechargeable batteries. You do you have to supply your own SD memory card, however.
Lenovo S10 4231 (six-cell battery)
In the Netbook realm, a lot of folks are partial to the HP 1000, but I happen to be fond of the S10, which now features an updated model with a longer lasting six-cell battery.
Samsung SyncMaster T240HD display
Here's the dilemma. See, Dad's got this little computer room where he slips away and does some work. But he also needs to do a little gaming and maybe watch some TV. This is where Samsung's SyncMaster T240HD comes in. It not only has lots of connectivity options for your gaming consoles, but it's also got a built-in HDTV tuner and it's an excellent computer monitor--all for a decent price. That said, if you can afford it, step up to the 26-inch version, the T260HD.
