Missouri Professor Wants To Lead Sudan

By
CBSNews
(AP)  A University of Missouri history professor is retiring and hopes to run for the presidency of Sudan.

Abdullahi Ibrahim has taught history at the University of Missouri for more than 15 years, but now he's retiring to return to his homeland, and, he hopes, to get elected as president of the African nation.

Ibrahim announced his candidacy for president last year while he was there on sabbatical. Sudan has been led nearly 20 years by a military dictator.

Ibrahim is 67, and had been a political activist in Sudan in the 1960s.

Sudan has been embroiled in civil wars since 1956. Its western Darfur region has gotten global attention because of a conflict that has included the rape, torture and displacement of hundreds of thousands of Sudanese citizens.

Gee I was hoping that having a black/white president would end the racisim or at least make it more paletable. Guess not huh Enjoy Life 63? I am a white senior citizen who is really enjoying President Obama and family in the White House. To bad many of you can't for what ever reason. He's doing a great job, I am very impressed.

What a statement! I believe you know him?
Well, in fact I don't believe anything that someone on a comment site will tell me about him/herself. But still: You sound like you have been harrassed by this man. Otherwise: shut up!

It's a "tough" country to lead---I wish him luck! I hope he's prepared for it---I'm guessing the political process is a LOT more "cutthroat" there than it is here!

If he gets elected, I hope he can get the Sudan going in a positive direction---they waste too much time there warring and killing!

Nothing like some white folks easing their guilty conscience. BTW, Obama is half white, too and not just black.

Does being Native American that 'voted' for Obama count for anything? Or are you just bashing 'White eyes'????

I am another white senior citizen who is very happy to see President Obama in office. He is doing an outstanding job with the horrible mess he inherited from the previous administration. So I second what jenkins501 wrote, though human nature being what it is, I don't think we'll see an end to white racist writings or rantings in our lifetime, sadly.

On the subject of this news article, I wish Mr. Ibrahim a great deal of luck in a country that desperately needs some decent leadership.
