"Ten, 11, 12,000 people who had been arrested and gone through you know interrogation or questioning and things like that," Boucek told Martin.
"So they just swept up everybody?" Martin asked.
"There were a lot of people who were, yeah, detained," Boucek replied.
Asked if there is any real organization of al Qaeda left in Saudi Arabia, Boucek said, "There are no first or second tier level operatives in the kingdom. They've all been killed or captured."
"We have hard approach. We have soft approach. Basically developing some programs to prevent this ideology from spreading to the society," Hadlaq explained.
A demonstration of a SWAT operation put on for 60 Minutes by the kingdom's special forces was as close as we could get to the hard approach.
But then the Saudis took 60 Minutes inside a compound on the outskirts of Riyadh and allowed us to get a first hand look at the soft approach.
There we met Dr. Turki Oetayan, a western educated psychologist, greeting men fresh out of Saudi jails.
The men at the compound will spend months listening to lectures until Oetayan and his colleagues declare them free of the impulses which incited them to holy war.
"I was giving them a lecture about the emotions, how they understand anger. I was trying to say anger is not, you know easy to control, especially in their cases," Dr. Oetayan said.
It's very much like anger management.
And then there's art therapy - a surprisingly modern concept introduced by Dr. Awad al Yami into a very conservative society. Dr. Awad says art gives his students a chance to express feelings they're not ready to talk about.

- So called "terrorist". Are you kidding me? Where did you get your journalistic degree, Obama school for left-wing news casters? Why don't you journalist start feeling some bit of sympathy for the victims of 9/11 instead of the terrorist who took 5,000 innocent American lives? I can understand why Obama sympathizes with them, after all he has never hidden his love for the middle east, but if you are going to do a story, please don't insult the American intelligence by trying to portray these terrorist as victims. THEY ARE TERRORIST, AND IF THEY HAD A BAD EXPERIENCE IN GITMO, GOOD!!!! I COULD CARE LESS IF THEY HAVE THEIR BONES BROKEN, THEIR NAILS TORN OUT, OR HOOKED UP TO A DIE HARD BATTERY, IF IT SAVED ONE AMERICAN LIFE. WHY DON'T YOU AND THE REST OF YOUR LEFT WING NUT CASES CARE ABOUT THE AMERICAN PEOPLE? INSTEAD YOU WORRY AND HAVE SYMPATHY FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVE MADE IT THEIR LIFE LONG GOAL TO KILL AMERICANS. MY ONLY HOPE IS THAT WHEN THEY ATTACK US AGAIN, AND THEY WILL THAT THEY GET AS MANY LIBERALS AS THEY CAN GET, BECAUSE YOU ARE THE ONES WHO WANT TO GIVE THEM THEIR FREEDOM, AND THEIR RIGHTS, SO THEY CAN GO OUT AND KILL AGAIN. YOU PEOPLE ARE JUST PLAIN STUPID!!!!!

- It is fascinating how these Muslims are using the very techniques advocated by Christ in dealing with your enemies and having so much success with them. A 10% recidivism rate is an incredible success. The US recidivism rate from US prisons is around 60%

- Obama can use some of our stimulus funds to help these poor political prisoners establish a life in the US. A bribe of a few million dollars should help keep them from wanting to attack us again.
Maybe he can work out a payola deal with Osama to keep us safe.
Obama is the reincarnation of Jimmy Carter and we will pay the price before his term is over. Terrorists will run all over wimps. - Reply to this comment

- Still sounds more like rewards than re-education to me. Houses, cars, and expensive weddings. That is not re-education that is a bonus.

- Reeducating Osama Bin Laden's Disciples.
I say reeducate with a Predator drone overhead.
For all the bleeding hearts say we made them into terrorists because of their treatment, well I guess they are now terrorists, and we need to take them out. - Reply to this comment
- Rehabilitating prisoners to civilian life... too bad they don't practice it here.

- cant believe this,if these detainees(in saudi) are given all this luxury the cars, homes and education etc ..then why cant we give the same treatment to our inmates look at our prisons..and mental health facilities ......yet we preach human rights to other countries
by the way whats the crime rate in saudi. (activities not related to terrorism) - Reply to this comment
- NO, but some real benefits from such wealthy employers as the Waltons might be beneficial for America, since the taxpayers are SUBSIDIZING the WALLYWORLD workers with food stamps, Medicaid, heating subsidies, etc...etc...etc....
Not to mention the huge subsidies that cities give the Waltons for bringing such a wonderful anti-American business to their fair city, by removing all their taxes so that the taxpayers have to pay more!
they are talking about you fools

This is a post about reeducating terrorists, and you are talking about Walmart? See what I mean about your absurd logic? You're not even close to the subject at hand.
I'm sure you're a nice guy in person...(maybe?), but that doesn't work when you have to type your thoughts onto posts on the Net. Slow down, get a grip, and try again. - Reply to this comment
- It seems Pythoncharly doesn?t lack from MSM reeducation or indoctrination. Moron!

- pythoncharly,
Nobody takes you serious, if anyone reads your crap it's like rubbernecking an accident scene. Your logic is absurd, you don't convey your ideas intelligently, basically you come across like a psychotic loon.
If you want people to even think of listening to you, you need a COMPLETELY different approach (I SHOULD USE ALL CAPS SO YOU UNDERSTAND). - Reply to this comment
- Almost 20% of US voters still have not been able to be "re-educated" -should we start with these?
- Reply to this comment
- Is "education" possible in order to avoid "re-education" - - Maybe lots of innocent folks would still be alive if there was a mental preparation for less "hate" - - maybe offspring should be taught more about a "world" instead of "kill" who you don't like.
Give 'em a job, house, car, and anything else they think they need because they were hatched into existence and maybe they won't get involved in terrorism - -

- FIVE THINGS THIS STORY TELLS US:
1 Under pressure from the US (and partly to protect its own interests), the Saudi govt has obviously implemented a somewhat faux rehab program for reasons of spin and propaganda.
2. The recidivism rate of the rehab program (10%) is obviously deflated, and how can any statisics be valid since the rehab program is so recent???
3. Americans are naive if they believe tough Muslim jihadists will "see the light" anytime soon (or ever)--and "anger management" hardly gets at the root of their pathological hatred of Americans for meddling in their economic and societal affairs over many years (especially oil and military bases).
4. Whabbism and Sharia law clearly are radical forms of Islam that oppress women and encourage violence against infidels toward the the joint goals of religious conversion and the dissemination of fundamentalism. The extremists are certainly to be feared--let's hope they never get well entrenched in the Western hemisphere..
5. It is ludicrous to think that making "ex"-jihadists consumptive consumers (by giving them cars, houses etc.) will "neuter" them--it may even allow them to fund more radical groups clandestinely. Here is the U.S. we've been consumptive consumers so long we're spoiled, and unlikely to foment rebellions the jihadists still have plenty of receptivity toward.
It is sad (and scary) that this planet can be occupied by human beings/**** sapiens who, through their institutions and training, can be so antagonistic toward each other that their goals are likely to (eventually) achieve mutual self destruction. But there you have it. - Reply to this comment
