Pakistan Clamps Down On Border Militants

By
CBSNews
(CBS)  The United States has criticized Pakistan for letting the Taliban take over key areas near the capital.

The Taliban started pulling out last week, and tonight the Pakistani military is trying to keep them out for good. These are the same militants who've been attacking U.S. troops in Afghanistan, as CBS News chief foreign affairs correspondent Lara Logan reports.

A Taliban propaganda video obtained by CBS News shows a small U.S. forward operating base in the mountain of Kunar in Afghanistan under heavy attack.

At one point in the fight, U.S. soldiers are extracted by a Medevac chopper. The Taliban cameraman records up-close images of U.S. troops being lifted to safety.

The images also show a U.S. Chinook helicopter being hit, downing its cargo. A U.S. Humvee is destroyed.

Kunar is right next to the Pakistan district of Dir. The only thing separating them is the porous, poorly-guarded border. And in Dir, a major Pakistani operation is underway right now against Taliban militants.

Defeating the militants in Pakistan is critical to U.S. success on the Afghan side of the border. That's what America's top military commander told CBS News when we spoke to him by phone from his plane. He was flying back from this region to the U.S.

"There is a direct relationship," said Admiral Michael Mullen, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff

That's why the recent show of strength by Taliban militants in Dir and the neighboring Swat Valley is so worrying to U.S. officials. Nuclear-armed Pakistan falling to extremists is Adm. Mullen's "worst case scenario".

"Obviously, I've got thousands of troops in Afghanistan," he said, "and the combination of continued deterioration in Pakistan to what could be a worst case scenario, almost makes Afghanistan impossible to turn around."

For now, the U.S. is keeping its forces on the Afghan side of the border, not sure how committed Pakistan is to the fight.

It does not fit into the
New World Order *************************************************************************************
NATO and the UN should send humanitarian relief to Pakistan. Why allow the desperately impoverished to suffer? They may be behind key hits on convoys of trucks travelling through the region. Islamabad must restore order in the nation. Militants appeal to the Under-privileged. Foreign aid would allow the Muslim Clerics to preach morality and obediance.

It is all thirst for more blood of innocents-US wanted action and the corrupted Pakistani govt. does not hesitate to shed blood to please the US so that its corrupt officials can get more funding and money in their pockets. It has been NUMEROUS bombings on mudhouses by "Angels Of Peace" resulting in several hundreds of thousands of civilian deaths in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iraq. Yet, there is push for more and more.

Enough already, each and every time after such operations comes the applaud from the blood thirsty people of the world and yet, each and every operation has achieved nothing but given rise to more resistence, uprising, anger and HATE-well called for..........You are dealing with COMMON MAN, and innocent people are suffering at the hands of the insecured "EXTREMIST"-I call "Angel of Peace." "Taliban" "Militants" and all are terms used for convenience and for you so that you may sleep better tonight.....

I suggest that it is probably no coincidence that this new military push against the Taliban by Pakistan forces comes at the same time that the U.S. Congress is talking about funding Pakistan with $200 to $400 million in additional military aid. As others have said, it is not what they do but what they sustain that really matters. We will see if Pakistan continues this committment after they have milked the U.S. cow for a few hundred million. If they do, it will be money well spent. If.

Excellent! The Pakistanis need to exert hegemony over their territory and show the Taliban that their incursions are NOT going to be allowed! Good for them! Kick some Taliban arses!
