Another Deadly Day In Baghdad

(CBS/AP)  Police say back-to-back suicide bombings have killed at least 60 people outside the most important Shiite shrine in Baghdad. Iranian pilgrims were among those killed.

Today's attacks are the latest in a string of high-profile attacks blamed on Sunni insurgents.

The blasts in the northern neighborhood of Kazimiyah come a day after nearly 80 people were killed in attacks, making it the deadliest day in Iraq in more than a year.

The suicide bombers Friday detonated explosive belts within minutes of each other near the gates of the tomb of Imam Mousa al-Kazim, an important Shiite saint, located in Baghdad's northern Kazimiyah neighbourhood, a police official said.

Police said the bombers struck shortly before the start of Friday prayers as worshippers streamed in to the mosque - an important site for Shiite pilgrims.

Police and hospital officials say 25 Iranian pilgrims were among those killed, and that 80 Iranians were among at least 125 people reported injured in the blasts.

The shrine has been a favored target of insurgents, most recently in early April when a bomb left in a plastic bag near the shrine killed seven people and wounded 23.

In January, a man dressed as a woman blew himself up near the shrine, killing more than three dozen people and wounding more than 70.

Imam Mousa al-Kazim is an eighth century saint, and one of 12 Shiite saints. Hundreds of thousands of Shiites march to the shrine in Kazimiyah every year to commemorate his death in A.D. 799. Shiites believe al-Kazim is buried in the Baghdad golden-domed shrine.

At least 87,215 Iraqis have been killed in violence since 2005, according to a previously undisclosed Iraqi government tally obtained by The Associated Press.

Combined with tallies based on hospital sources and media reports since the beginning of the war and a review of available evidence by the AP, the figures show that more than 110,000 Iraqis have died in violence since the 2003 U.S.-led invasion.

The Health Ministry death tally, provided by a government official on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the data, counts deaths from the beginning of 2005 until Feb. 28. It excludes thousands of people who are missing and civilians who were buried in the chaos of war without official notice.

The figure includes only violent deaths - people killed in attacks such as shootings, bombings, mortar attacks and beheadings. It excludes indirect factors such as damage to infrastructure, health care and stress that caused thousands more to die.

To what end do you think taking the AK 47's away will have on the violence in a WAR ZONE.
Stop with the gun control stuff, the AK 47's are the only thing that these people have to defend themselves with. If you must complain about something complain about the fact that we would not be there if a cretin two Republican's had not been so hot to go to Iran in the first place. If there were WMD we would know we sold the stuff to them to fight against Iran in the 80's and if the other countries wanted this nut out why did they not do something about it themselves? Simple answer, they knew America would because we had a cowboy in the White house and he was told by god to do this he said it himself but how many people missed that. BI guess in his mind, and a whole lot of others, doing good has no end. This kind of logic worries me.

These people were killing each other 200 years ago before they found out they had oil, and when their oil runs out 200 years from now they will still be living in a desert killing each other. I don't think these people don't know how to do anything else. And why are we backing Saudi Arabia when their people keep going to Iraq to fight whit the insergents against the Iraq government and our armed forces. Seems to me we are fighting the wrong group.

YOU CAN'T STAND IT?

HOW DO YOU THINK THE IRAQ'S FEEL,

AFTER GETTING EIGHT YEARS OF AMERICAN

FREEDOM SHOVED DOWN THEIR THROATS?

BUSH/CHENEY IS A WAR CRIMINAL THEY BELONG IN PRISON

ON DEATH ROW

--------------------------

No, I cant stand it, obviously they cant but they at least have a say in it, they are the ones blowing each other up, as far as your point I agree, clearly it never should have happened. But why should I have to be drug down into the muck also, maybe we aren't being blown up but we are victims of this bs too, not only our tax dollars being spent on them instead of us, but the negativity is endless and it has a definite affect on the american psyche as well as the entire world. I am sick to death of it.

Baghdad is still safer than New York City... - mav547166

This because citizens of Baghdad are allowed to keep on AK-47 per household for personal protection. There are no anti-gun groups trying to take away their right to self defense. Just think how much safer it'd be in New York City if everyone was allowed to arm themselves for personal defense.

Please stop reporting on Iraq, I cant stand the negativity that it brings into everyone in our country's lives anymore, this killing there will never end, why should we have to hear about it or think about it. I don't want to know anymore. I am seriously at the end of what I can stand in regards to Iraq at this point. Who cares about these people anymore, they had a chance at freedom and peace and they don't want it. Its so barbaric its not worth talking about at this point.

Is this country ever going to be able to govern itself?

They did "good enough" until March 2003, and we removed the ONLY person able to provide stability to the country, and a deterrence to Iran.

It's always been the Arab style to have a "strong man" at the top. When US troops leave, someone will beome their dictator again.

Baghdad is still safer than New York City, not to mention there have been over a 150,000 murders in the US since 2005, not including this year. -- as posted by mav547166 at 4:54 AM : Apr 24, 2009
