Stores Go High-Tech To Tempt Your Nose

Think the picture on a box of brownies is appetizing?

Soon you may be tempted by the smell of freshly baked brownies as well, CBS-2 consumer reporter Kristin Cole explains.

The scent isn't coming from a mix inside the box but from an electronic label programmed to release a bit of the mouth-watering aroma every time the shopper walks down the aisle.

"As you approach the coffee, they will send out the coffee aroma when they sense you're coming by," says Peter Harrop of IDTechex.

What's behind the trend? To get your hunger hormones cranked up and induce you to open the wallet.

The advertising industry has always been based on fooling the consumer into thinking they need something that they really don't need. As deceptive as this seems on the surface, it's what's called "good advertising". It wouldn't be deceptive at all if they actually used the smells of real baked goods and foodstuffs.

Eat before you go shopping or better still - take a health bar with you and eat while you're shopping! What momma always says is still true today, "don't go shopping on an empty stomach".

On the plus side, after you use the product you can keep the packaging to use as an air freshener. This could actually save people money.

Gimmicks like this cause the price of every thing to go up......Does corporate America NOT understand,,,,"We the People" are broke?,,,,,Forget the fancy packaging,,,,,,give us a break on prices,,,,,I get so sick of hearing commercials and seeing ads that imply if we only have a dollar left ...they want it too.,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Corporate America is going to commit economic suicide by out pricing what consumers can afford,,,,,just look at the auto industry, they offer throw away junk at a premium price,,,that loses its resale value so fast that before you drive a new car a month....you are already upside down on the loan value,,,,,,,All products are way out of line price wise,,,,,,Our government has forgotten one little detail about the economy.......it does NOT matter how many billions of dollars are pumped into the banks and corporate America from the government,,,,,,,,if the PEOPLE don't have jobs or money.....corporate America will have NO ONE to sell their goods to.
