Young Woman, Man Accused Of "Immoral Acts," Shot By Firing Squad

(AP)  Taliban gunmen used a firing squad to kill a young couple in southern Afghanistan for trying to elope, shooting them with rifles in front of a crowd in a lawless, militant-controlled region, officials said Tuesday.

The woman, 19, and the man, 21, were accused by the militants of immoral acts, and a council of conservative clerics decided that the two should be killed, said Ghulam Dastagir Azad, the governor of the southwestern province of Nimroz.

The two had fled their homes and hoped to travel to Iran, but their parents sent villagers to bring them home, said Sadiq Chakhansori, the chief of Nimroz' provincial council. Once back home, the pair was either turned over to the Taliban by their parents or the militants came and took them by force, the officials said, providing slightly varying accounts.

Riflemen in the remote district of Khash Rod shot the man and woman with AK-47s Monday, said Chakhansori.

In remote and dangerous regions of Afghanistan, Taliban fighters operate what are sometimes referred to as shadow governments, where militant leaders serve as government officials and run their own police units and pseudo court systems.

The Afghan government has no access to the remote region where the two were shot, said Jabar Pardeli, the provincial police chief of Nimroz.

The conservative Taliban movement ruled Afghanistan from 1996-2001 and put in place harsh social rules that forbade unmarried men and women to talk or meet in public. Women were not allowed out of their homes without a male relative, and girls couldn't go to school.

Taliban fighters have widened their influence the last three years and now control many remote districts in Afghanistan where there are not enough U.S., NATO or Afghan forces to establish a permanent presence.

Responding to commanders' requests for more troops, President Barack Obama recently announced that the U.S. would send 21,000 more troops to the country this summer to bolster the 38,000 U.S. forces already in the country.

This is outrageous. What is wrong with the people of this region that they allow such murders and just sit passively by ? How is it possible for parents to love their crazy religious code more than they love their own children ? This is pure evil. Posted by realnews12 at 5:33 AM : Apr 14, 2009

They are taught this when they are still in the crib. Forced into submission at an early age and they don't know any better. Sad but true.

And some wonder why we are still in Afghanistan. Posted by familyguy38 at 6:54 AM : Apr 14, 2009
............
We are still there because the former CiC decided he didn't care about bin laden anymore and didn't have a plausible reason to pull the troops back out. Again sad but true...

I cant beleive some Liberals here compare the Taliban to Christians and Religous people. Many groups of humans whether Religous or Athiest have resorted to inhumain brutal behavior beyond belief. If you know your history, All the major wars of the 20th century had nothing to do with religion and in fact most of them were started by Athiest Comunists and Nazi's. Nazi's promoted their idiology with evolutionary theory that led to Eugenics "cleaning up the gene pool" as they called it. Look it up. Most people dont even know what Eugenics is, but their grand parents do. It was started by earth loving Athiests.

And finally the peacefull sex perversion loving liberals most holy thing that they want to protect is Abortion. Thats right, baby killing is the holy grail of liberalism, and somehow their better that Christians. I don't think so.

If you think late term abortion is ok, then you are no better than the Taliban.

Face the fact that Humans are just f'd up.

There are people right here in America who would love to impose those laws, right here and now. Unfortunately there is no middle ground with these kind of people. You have to kill them all.

It is beyond comprehension to me that any sane human could possibly believe that executing these two young lovers would be the instructions of God (Allah.)

The old testament of the Bible also instructs execution as punishment for such trivial "crimes" as premarital sex, or working on the sabbath. Thankfully, these barbaric practices are not still observed, as apparently most christians and jews have come to their senses on these issues.

However, I have to wonder how anyone can believe that God would ever be so angry and vindictive, but he must have been, since Jews, Christians, and Muslims alike believe that God was so pissed at us humans that he orchestrated the largest mass genocide in history.(The Great Flood)

Honestly, I don't believe it would ever be possible to reason with these radical Muslims and their beliefs make them truly dangerous.

Imagine them gaining control of Pakistan's nuclear weapons!

These folks must be stopped by any means necessary.

All religious extremism is dangerous.

The behavior of the Taliban in this unfortunate situation reeks of their own core insecurities. Their control is jeopardized without the use of force and intimidation. Even in the face of continued brainwashing from childhood onward, at some point exposure to the world and common sense will overcome the "ruled" masses and they will take matters into their own hands. Otherwise, they will fail as a society and a system - it is only a matter of time.

Thanks to Bush/Cheney for a job well done!!!

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!!! (....eh.....now, what was that about Iraq??)

Eight years of cluster.......!

Let's pit the "Christian Taliban" vs "Muslim Taliban"....they can work to obliterate each other, while the rest of the world can live in peace.
