(CBS)  The fight against the Taliban just got a lot more difficult.

This week, Pakistan's president signed a deal that imposes Islamic law in the northwest corner of his country. It's the latest sign that the Taliban is taking over a large part of Pakistan, as CBS News correspondent Elizabeth Palmer reports.

The Taliban has been holding victory parades - convoys to declare that they're back in control. But this isn't happening in Afghanistan - the country most associated with the Taliban - but next door, in Pakistan.

They've brought with them their harsh interpretation of Islamic justice, including public floggings. Recent disturbing images show a teenage girl - accused of adultery - being beaten by local men.

The Pakistani authorities can do nothing. In February, they ceded control of the area to Taliban fighters. Now police stations and army posts lie in ruins.

It was a humiliating surrender of key territory, known as the Swat Valley. Now Washington worries it will become a militant stronghold for attacking U.S. positions in Afghanistan.

Families who fled during the fighting are coming back to a hard life under new masters.

It's an ugly development - and one Pakistan's president is reluctant to recognize.

"The Taliban are not going to be in control of any part of my country," said Pakistani President Ali Asif Zardari.

But they already are: digging into Swat, dismantling roadblocks they'd built to keep Pakistani troops out, and setting up their headquarters.

"Swat has shown people that you can move into an area of a large country that is poorly governed and you can pretty much take over by intimidation and threatening people and killing people," said Frederick Barton, of the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

The new stronghold is becoming a potent symbol for Islamic militants in the region hoping to expand their operations.

I really find it quite worrying when reading American noticeboards, surely the comments do not represent the views of your average American, if so God help us in the rest of the world and the quicker you disarm your atomic weapons the better for all of us.

Next the Taliban will have the nuclear weapons Pakistan has. The Taliban are trying to hold on to the past say 1000 A.D. when the crusades against Salidin occured. Now they have modern weapons and will want complete control of Pakistan and their nukes. The U.N. kicked the taliban out of Afganistan now they just set up shop in Pakistan. At least we know what Valley their in and Pakistan get ready to have that area throughly destroyed against your wises, you signed an agreement with tthe Taliban not the U.S. or U.N.

Defending it against whom again?

When she should more accurately be shaking it in hypocrisy.

"Islam brought the war to America on Sept 11". Posted by champcoach

Well here we have another idiot, ready to commit genocide because of the actions of a few people.

Let's allow his twisted logic, since the right-wing neocon-derthals like this one are seen by the DHS as a potential threat, we should wipe them all out.

"Now, if that Muslim-loving BO thinks we can play nice and they will leave us alone, he better wake up and smell the coffee before we are dealing with another disaster." Posted by champcoach

Right, so kill all the right-wing fake neos.

"... They intend to dominate the world, they haven't changed for 1,400 years and they're not about to change now. Better get your game face on, rookie." Posted by champcoach

It hasn't been 1400 years, only 445 years, but yes, those neocon-derthal racists are indeed a danger.

DHS, get on it.

The only reason the taliban has gotten stronger over there is because the so-called "men" over there are more concerned about running around flogging 13-YEAR OLD LITTLE GIRLS than they are DEFENDING THEIR OWN COUNTRY! They worry about stupid BS like burkas and flogging women while the rest of the country goes to he11 in handbasket!

"We are not at war with Islam," says B. Hussein Oblamo. We were not at war with Japan until they brought it to us. Islam brought the war to America on Sept 11. Now, if that Muslim-loving BO thinks we can play nice and they will leave us alone, he better wake up and smell the coffee before we are dealing with another disaster. Assuming this story is accurate, President Obama and his military commanders will need to be re-appraising the situation in Afghanistan!

If Pakistan becomes a safe haven that the Taliban can operate out of, it makes winning in
Afghanistan very difficult, if possible.

In the short term, increase attacks and firepower to defeat the enemy; depending on effectiveness and/or results, withdraw in six months and don't waste tens of billions of dollars that this government doesn't have to spend on this beyond this point in time!

George Bush et al failed years ago to properly fight this war, it might be unwinnable now!

This Press report is a piece of propaganda made at meddling into pakistan internal affairs by the USA government of racism, terrorism. domination and illegal occupation of other people's land.

First of all the people in the so called Swat valley are Pakistan nationals and not afghan nationals, if they have links with afghanistan it is because they are of the same ethnic group with their brothers in afghanistand and also share the same religion.

It is normal for the people of pakistan to fight for their right to preserve morality in their country and not allow it to become a child pornography heaven like in the european people culture.

or a gay disease heaven like the european way of life. the USA has no right to open it mouth on the internal affairs of a country it hate because of their skin color is different to the europeans racist pinkish skin color.

Nice work President Obama! It will be good for the Islamic extremists to see you bowing to the Saudi king. Now they will know you are surely on their side.

I see you continue your perfect record of absolutely uninformed, out-of-touch-with-reality posts. Your hero shrub did the same and more on more than one occasion, and while I hate to support him , rightfully so. It's called protocol and is a sign of regard between heads of state to follow each other's traditions when visiting.

Bush (and you nitwits that supported him) made this mess by taking his ego and oil-related ambitions to Iraq and ignoring the only war we should ever have been involved in during this century.

Now please be quiet and watch President Obama's administration overcome and clean it up.

Of course this is mainly a Muslim problem. This area of the world has been in conflict for thousands of years. The question every American should ask is what the heck are we doing over there? Tons of tax money, loss of life and limb. All on the silly stupid cause that we must bomb and kill innocent people because we had to find one former CIA operative that to this day the FBI has not charged with the crime of masterminding the New Pearl Harbor. Only the dumbest among us believe the CIA was powerless to track this guy down in a covert operation.

If Bush had fully committed and finished the job in Afghanistan, instead of invading Iraq, we wouldn't be looking at the very real possibility of Pakistan falling into the hands of the Taliban.

valh1, President Obama's bow was a sign of respect to a leader of a nation with officially Positive relations with the U.S Your apparent Hero dubya walked around holding hands with the Saudi king-and even Kissed him !

Your Derogatory remark President Obama being on the side of the Islamic extremists
highlights your Ignorance of the President's Stand-up Policy against said Islamic extremists- he is giving the U.S. military force in Afghanistan a Needed Huge Manpower Boost.
You probably Forgot about Afghanistan, like the Iraq-focused recently-replaced U.S,
President did.
iam 4honesty has told it like it IS.
