Oscar-winning director and leading man Mel Gibson makes headlines.

(AP)  Mel Gibson's wife of 28 years filed for divorce Monday, citing irreconcilable differences.

Robyn Gibson filed the petition, which offers no details of the breakup, in Los Angeles Superior Court.

The couple have seven children, but only one under 18. Robyn Gibson has requested joint custody of their son who turns 10 on Tuesday.

Details of how the couple's assets will be divided were not spelled out in the court filings. Robyn Gibson is seeking jewelry and earnings and assets she accrued after the couple separated, and a share of the money and assets Gibson, 53, has earned during his nearly three decades as a Hollywood hitmaker.

She wants the actor-director to pay spousal support and her attorney's fees.

The Gibsons released a joint statement Monday, seeking privacy.

"Throughout our marriage and separation we have always strived to maintain the privacy and integrity of our family and will continue to do so," the statement read.

The couple were married in June 1980, court records show.

"Mad Max" in 1979 brought Gibson his first international attention, closely followed by the critically acclaimed "Gallipoli" and the Mad Max sequel "The Road Warrior."

Gibson has since gone on to make a mix of crowd-pleasing shoot-'em-ups such as the "Lethal Weapon" franchise, and has established himself as a director. 1995's "Braveheart" earned Gibson two Oscars for best picture and best director.

He also produced and directed the surprise blockbusters "The Passion of the Christ" and "Apocalypto," which broke box-office records for foreign language films in its opening weekend in several countries.

His divorce was first reported by celebrity gossip site TMZ, which made a splash for its reporting of the actor's anti-Semitic slurs uttered during a drunken driving arrest in 2006.

Gibson pleaded no contest to the charge later that year and was given three years' probation.

Since then, he has hosted Britney Spears at his home in Costa Rica, and continued his acting career. He stars in "Edge of Darkness," scheduled for release later this year.

So he made a mistake! Read your bible "Let him who is without sin cast the first stone." Whatever their problems are people should give a little kindness. Just imagine what would be on the news or in the newspapers if Ronald Reagan has been the one who have the "affair" with Monica Loinski (probably not spelled right). He would have been crucified in the media.

He's going to hell! He got divorced! Divorce is a sin! Confess! Repent!

They need to remove "til death do you part" from marriage vows. I mean, who are they kidding.

Chuckle.

Men trying to keep women happy. As if. Don't waste your time. It's impossible.

There are worse things than being alone. I know that's tough for women to hear.

Regarding Mel ...

I have wondered for a long time what it was about him that kept Robyn satisfied? I imagine that a strong woman with a Catholic background is what it is. He showed his butt in almost every movie (nice) but was it so nice for his wife? My brother shows his moon every chance he gets but I don't thing that his wife appreciates it too much. And then the pics of him in South America (maybe Mexico) at beaches with girls must have broken the camels back! So, girls, Mel is almost on the market! LOL!!!!!

Gee, everyone on here seems to know so very much about this marriage. Guess I need to subscribe to People or start watching TMZ. And CMancos, she's not Woody Allen's adopted daughter, she's Mia Farrow's adopted daughter.

Well it's about time, now I can get on with my life knowing that those two aren't with each other anymore.
HIding behind the walls with all that misery building up after all the years of tourment and anquish.
They never diserved each other in the first place and never was happy from day one.
Yelling and craping on each other and threatening each other, man what a horrible marrage,I'll be partying tonight knowing those two are not to geather anymore.

The greatest director of all time"?

No way. That would be Mel Brooks. Or, Woody Allen. It's close.

Mel is at best the white Spike Lee. :0

I think the reference concerns serious directors not clowns and ones that take their own adopted daughters for a wife. If I ever seen Woody Allen, I would spit on his shoes. His movies are retarded and so is his mental ability. Comparing Gibson to Spike Lee is a joke. Lets check out how much money Gibson made with the movies he directed against Spikey. You seem the type that thinks "Animal House" was the greatest movie of all time.

Mel always said his wife was a saint to put up with him. Obviously, she has had enough. I love Mel Gibson, always will but he has to fight his demons just like the rest of us. It may be just what he needs for a wake up call. Maybe its her turn to live her life instead of living for him and the children. I hope that they can work it out.

after 28 years why bother divorcing? but if they must, let it be a friendly divorce. no one knows what goes on behind closed doors except the participants.
