In neighboring Jordan, senior officials from several Arab states reiterated their support for an Arab peace initiative offering recognition to Israel in exchange for an Israeli withdrawal from the territories it occupied in the 1967 Mideast War, including land the Palestinians want for a state.
However, Israel's previous centrist government did not accept the initiative, and it is even less likely to win the support of the new right-wing coalition led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Netanyahu hasn't expressed support for the idea of Palestinian statehood, instead offering the Palestinians "economic peace," and his foreign minister has dismissed peace efforts by the previous U.S. administration. A year of U.S.-backed Israeli-Palestinian negotiations did not produce tangible results, and it is unlikely talks on the terms of Palestinian statehood will resume under Netanyahu.
The Palestinians have set their own conditions for resuming negotiations.
"If Israel wants to engage in political negotiations, it must accept a two-state solution, agreements signed and halt settlement activity," Saeb Erekat, the chief Palestinian negotiator, said Saturday.
Erekat said that just as the international community boycotts Gaza's Islamic militant Hamas rulers because of their refusal to recognize Israel, pressure must be put on Israel to recognize the idea of Palestinian statehood.
"Failure to apply the same standards would mean pushing this region into the hands of extremists," Erekat said.
Palestinian foreign minister Riad Malki said late Saturday that President Mahmoud Abbas is expected to visit Washington at the end of the month to discuss the stalled peace talks with President Barack Obama. This would be the first meeting between the two leaders since Obama's inauguration.
Obama's Middle East envoy, George Mitchell, is also expected to travel to the region starting Monday with stops in Israel, the Palestinian territories and Egypt as well as other countries.
In the Jordanian capital of Amman, senior officials from Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Jordan and Qatar said they remain committed to the Arab peace initiative, first proposed in 2002.
Jordanian Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh said the collective Arab position is a "commitment to the Arab peace initiative, the establishment of an independent Palestinian state and the comprehensive and lasting solution that we all seek for the conflict in this region."
Jordan's King Abdullah II will convey that message to Obama when the two meet, Judeh said, adding that no date has been set yet for a visit.
Qatar's support was also significant because it has some influence over Hamas.

- 1. There is not a palestinian land- the so called palestinians are half jordanian half egyptian...which by the way are doing nothing, nada, zero to help their fellow brothers. Palestine as it is claimed and sold in propaganda is only that ...propaganda to hide the real issue of antisemitism.
2. History tells us that the land the so called palestinians are claiming was never an issue or of interest until Israel was created...which takes us to #3
3. Israel was created by a british mandate accepted and approved by United Nations-the land was not occupied or stolen or anything palestinians claim...again another false story and statement made by them to be seen as martyrs.
4. Jordan and Egypt have made peace with Israel- but nobody can make peace with the palestinians...they are taught since birth to be parasites and martyrs
5. Any other population living where palestinian live would have made the land prosperous, economy and infracstructure risen, better healthcare conditions, more productive nation...but NO..the PLO made sure their people only worries would be to drag israelis to the sea.
Now my question.....who can make peace with such people????
You may argue the conditions they live in is, of course, Israel responsibilty...not Jordan, Egypt, Syria, Iran, Lebanon...Israel's fault all the way.
But if US would be bombarded, attacked with suicide bombers, rocket shooting on a daily basis...trust your senses that they would not be able to make peace with the attackers either...same thing Europe and anywhere in the world.
However, we ask of the israelis to give more land, more resources, give away their capital of Jerusalem....to make peace.
THere has to be peace first..how you ask?
Peace means recognizing Israel existance and right to exist, to include Israel in their maps and education, to stop teaching palestinians to hate israelis, stop violence completely, to teach them to produce and make peace and then and only THEN....
THere could be a two state solution side by side in PEACE.
Peace will never be achieved if it is only one sided
What guarantees does Israel have that if there is a palestinian state side by side the violence will stop and safety and security will reign....NONE!
Just pass by the check points and you will see how many palestinians keep trying to infiltrate as suicide bombers! And don't forget to check the tunnels!
Hamas has said it very clearly: "If there is an agreement reach, our truce will only be temporarily until we settle in our new territory and then will continue our ultimate goal of wiping them off the map....sounds very one sided to me! - Reply to this comment
- Israel needs to give back ALL the land they stole since 1967.

Sorry Muslim, but I know that you're just dying for someone to listen to your propaganda lies for the cause of your jihad against Israel and the West, but the fact of the matter is ANYONE with an elementary school "Googling level" can look up the fact that Israel kicked some major butt in the 67 war against you Muslim crooks and they can also look up the fact that despite you Muslims outnumbered Israel in the MILLIONS in 1948, that Israel still defeated your jihadist forces and Israel has moved on, strong.
Why do you continue to follow "allah" if he can't even get the job done for you and kill all the Jews and the rest of us "infidels" as your Quran and Hadith call for?
"allah" can't seem to get the job done, yet you continue to follow him, and teach your children to carry AK-47s and blow themselves up in an act of shahada for the cause of islam every day.
Perhaps one of these days you'll find out just how weak of a god "allah" is since he can't defeat tiny Israel as you muslims dream of. - Reply to this comment
- Anyone who is capable of doing 5th grade level googling can look up the history of that land, and they can easily look up the fact that the term "Palestinian" is merely a propaganda tool that's been pushed through the media for the past 40 years and other outlets as a method of concealing the jihad against Israel by Muslim Arabs.
Yasser Arafat was one of the first culprits of this propaganda.
Former PLO terrorist Walid Shoebat, exposes this astronomical lie of the term "Palestinian"

- cbs : HOW ABOUT THIS AS A TITLE:
"STILL NO LIBERTY IN GAZA AND WEST BANK: NO DESIRE FOR PEACE CITED AGAIN FOR FAILURE OF PROGRESS." - Reply to this comment
- I looked at the heading again "Palestinians: Israel Must Back 2 States "
Israel was about to give 96% of the West bank and Gaza to the Palis back in the 90s and the rest as negotiable.
What was Arafat and the Palis response..........the Intifada and bombs !
Hey CBS............why title something that way ?.....got an agenda maybe ? - Reply to this comment
- "Tolerance and Liberty ????" tell that to the Christian women who have been forced to convert to Islam and marry men they do not know, becoming just a slave in the household of multiple wives. Tell that to the owners of Christian book stores, killed and burned down. Tell that to Gayyys who have been publically hung, for being themselves. Or to those reporters who have been tortured and killed.
What a joke. - Reply to this comment
- WHAT CBS LEFT OUT.....
the official "road map" stipulates that "A two State solution ... will only be achieved through an end to violence and terrorism, when the Palestinian people have a leadership acting decisively against terror and are willing and able to build a practicing democracy based on tolerance and liberty.." THIS HAS NOT HAPPENED .

- As long as you also post the long list of crimes the Israelis and Americans have done in the Middle East and elsewhere. Don't think that these terrorist acts by these corporate governments are unnoticed by the world. The crimes done by the Zionists and Christians make what Muslims have done PALE in comparison.

- I attended a campus meeting to "bring together" pro Palest. and pro Israeli students and faculty,as a community, with all of us wanting "peace". There had to be nearly 1000 people there. It was a big deal. The point is, when the group was asked, how many wanted a two state solution, each living in peace next to the other, ONLY the JEWS and Pro Israeli raised their hands. None of the Pro Palest. students ( who also did not mingle, but sat in one section at their insistance ) wanted a two state solution. It was funny, because worse, they all looked toward their "student leader" who was a FACULTY MEMBER, known for being a charming "radical" and giving poor grades to Jewish students, unless they wrote and spoke the line.
The bottom line ls, don't believe it. Only the Jews sincerely want peace. - Reply to this comment

- Yes, I agree the Nazi values live on. They have brought to an even higher level by the United States and Israel. The old, they did it to me so I'll do it to you. But they have a LOT of ignorant Americans fooled into thinking theirs is good apartheid and genocide.
You don't fight terror by doing it yourself, Israel and the US!!!!!!! - Reply to this comment

- NEO LOYALIST : Historically the NAZI and the Arabs were allies. Hitler begged the ARABS to take in the Jews, from Europe. Not only did the Arab leaders refused, they manned and organized mass killing of Jews, in Arab countries and in Europe as well. There was been no apology, much less reparations. To me, the Nazis ideas and philsophy have lived on.

- The problem is that the Israelis became the terrorists. Their best friend is the terrorist United States who fund them. Israel needs to give back ALL the land they stole since 1967. They need to tear down the apartheid wall. Then they can live in peace side by side.

- IT is not just a two State solution. It is two states that accept peace, do not allow any terrorist organizations, do not support terrorists ( Fatah does, Hamas is.)
At Oslo, the Israeli gave up so much just to accept a Palest State, which had peaceful goals and did not tolerated terrorists..
At Annapolis . Condi made the Is. and Olmert accept any Palest. State, including one that wanted to actively support terrorists and killings of innocent.
IT is time to give up that notion. It is not Is that has to prove it is legitimate state. Things are upside down. - Reply to this comment
- The Palestinians are the ones who need to accept the two state solution. Their idea of a peace has always been that a 2 state solution is the first step...and then the elimination of the state of Israel is the second step.

To add.............they have Jordan which is 90% Palestinian...gee I wonder why ?
Jordan also controlled the West Bank between 1948-1967. Why didn't the Palestinians demand a state from Jordan then ?
The same can be said with the Gaza Strip which was "occupied" by Egypt between 1948-67.

Now that is a pretty good idea. You on one side and the Israelies on another side. Are you suggessting "separate but equal?" Or do you suggest that there only be a Palestine. Besides, who gives up land? If the Palestinians want more land, let them purchase it from Israel. Can they afford it. Probably, not. - Reply to this comment
