2 Dead In Michigan College Shooting

A student fatally shot a female classmate before turning the gun on himself Friday in an apparent murder-suicide that prompted a lockdown at a community college west of Detroit, police said.

The bodies of Asia McGowan, 20, of Ecorse, and Anthony Powell, 28, of Detroit, were discovered inside a classroom at a Henry Ford Community College building after police responded to an emergency call of an assault and shortly afterward reports of a shot being fired on campus, said Dearborn Deputy Police Chief Gregg Brighton.

As officers entered the MacKenzie Fine Arts Center, they heard another gunshot, Brighton said.

Powell apparently used a shotgun to kill McGowan and himself, police said.

They took at least one class together — a theater course that had met earlier in the day, Brighton said. Police did not believe anyone else was in the room at the time of the shooting.

The 17,000-student commuter school sent alerts through an e-mail and cell phone system and locked down the campus, said Marjorie Swan, Henry Ford's vice president/controller.

"Nothing like this has ever occurred on campus," Swan said.

The lockdown later was lifted but classes for the rest of the day were canceled, as were Saturday's classes.

The shooting happened on Good Friday, and the campus wasn't as busy as usual, based on how full the parking lots were, Swan said.

"Our hearts go out to the family and the friends of the young woman who lost her life today," she said.

Turahn McGowan said his daughter was "beautiful, an aspiring actress and dancer" who had planned to try out for the Fox television competition "So You Think You Can Dance."

A call to a phone number listed for Anthony Powell in Detroit wasn't immediately answered Thursday night.

Christian Plonka, a 12-year-old who attends a theater program in the building, said he heard "one gunshot, and I saw someone getting pulled back into the room they were in."

Christian and other students in the program ran into a parking lot at the adjacent University of Michigan-Dearborn campus, where they waited until police allowed them to leave.

Earlier Friday, a 19-year-old gunman wounded three people at a vocational training college in Athens, Greece, before killing himself, authorities said.

The shootings came a week after a man walked into the American Civic Association center in Binghamton, N.Y., and killed 14 people before turning the gun on himself.

Gallup poll registers the lowest puplic approval of gun control ( bans) in it's 50 years of polling.
I never heard of CBS news report a stabbing murder and cover Where The Knife Was Bought. A strangelation and ask, what kind of shoe lace was used as the murder weapon. Never a beating to death and it be covered what state the tire iron was bought in.
But if someone is hurt and a gun is used,CBS gives us UN-BIASED coverage?

I just want those who think arming students is a good idea to look at the findings of this study about college students with guns:

"Approximately 4% of US college students own guns, and those that do are more likely
than others to engage in certain high-risk behaviors, such as binge drinking, new study
findings show.

Dr. Matthew Miller of Harvard University in Boston and his colleagues found that
gun-owning college students tend to drink higher amounts of alcohol at a time, and when
doing so, are more likely than others to have unprotected sex and run-ins with police.

Other high-risk behaviors more commonly noted in gun-owners included driving while
drunk and using crack and cocaine.'

Nice!~

The number of Americans killed in mass shootings in the last month is greater than the number killed in Iraq this year. John Avlon says we cant solve the problem if we dont keep track of the dead.

It is not about keeping track of the dead, it is about teaching the living some values and morals. The same values and morals this nation threw away years ago. I do not hear you crying about the millions of unborn babies ripped apart while still alive in the womb. Where is you indignation for them. Obama lifed the ban on partial-birth abortion, which means killing a fully developed baby before it is delivered by ramming an instrument into the base of it skull before it is completed born. When you teach your children that they evolved from monkeys, there is no God and no heaven or hell, then that is what you get. Point the finger at yourself.

For the Columbine High School massacre on April 20th in Littleton, Colorado ? in which fifteen people were killed and twenty-three wounded ? Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold used a Tec-DC9 semiautomatic handgun, a 9 mm Hi-Point semiautomatic carbine rifle and two sawed-off shotguns (supplemented by more than fifty bombs). All of these guns were available legally, with no licensing of the user or registration of the gun required. Shielded by the determined efforts of the gun lobby, gun makers, dealers and owners operate in their own world, with virtually no government supervision....................

Maybe if Eric Harris and Dylan Klebolds parents had a clue to what their unsupervised teens were up to it may not have happened. Maybe Obama will get his way and our right to have arms to protect ourselves will be taken away like all the bleeding heart liberals want, then we can be left helpless on the day we either have civil unrest or when attacked by an enemy. The first thing a dictator wants to do is disarm the people so they will be easier to control and of no resistance. You need to get it through your head that you can pass all the gun laws you want and they will still be sold on the black market. That means they will still be in the hands of criminals and law abiding citizens will be helpless. Maybe the answer is to get yourself out of your nice cozy suburb and work with the youth in the inner cities and suburbs. A gun doesn't kill anyone, it's the idiot behind it that does.

shoo shoe Bush.
You are talking to an adult. I have defended myself with a firearm three times over 15 years, and have not accidently injured a SINGLE friend-- let alone 66 friends-- ("22" X 3). these myths you believe are often self revealing with just a LITTLE common sense. And not much.
They are shop worn WE-COULD--SAYs from people waging a discrimination campaign from the shadows against good Americans and they will not talk factualy, no matter what.
It's not and never has been the NRA which convinced me I "need" a gun. It was real crimes occuring in my nieghborhood. And violent criminals released from prisons at large.
You do a lot of research and share it. But that info is ancient stuff regurgitated for the news media when gun control advocates stop hiding in shame from the lies they have diseminated! Revealed by the ASSAULT WEAPON BAN and how it came to be sunsetted...on the merits of the FACTS!
It did not and CAN NOT reduce crime and violence!
Be safe. Buy a firearm. Get safty instruction. And if you NEVER need to protect your self! GREAT! 9-1-1 canbe 9-1-WAIT!

We have taught a generation of people that unborn human lives have no inherent value and old, sick lives need to be ended at someone else's will. We have also taught that it is always someone else's fault if a person does something wrong. Then there is the belief that there are no absolutes of right and wrong -- only legal and illegal if you get caught. If we take the logical conclusion that man is only a highly developed animal with no intrinsic value then what difference does killing someone else make? One could use the argument that killing off a few of the population is helping offset global warmng. After the evolutionary principle is that the strong kill off the weak and make the species stronger for it. My father fought in WWII to defeat a government leader who bought that theory.

A re-occuring myth about the assault weapons ban.
It's explained that President Bush allowed the ban to expire.
Not true.
The congress did.
Bush made it clear that he would sign an extention of the ban if passed by the Congress. the Congress did not pass it. And gun control advocates were distanceing themselves from it. there are many myths around this law. CBS won't share what all it knows.
The main stream media is struggeling these days. They squandered their credibility.

The assaualt weapons ban to did not do anything to reduce violence and so , as built into the law it's self, it had to be SUNSETTED!
For all it'sdetail, it was a farce. it's point was to be a gimmick to attack fitrearms owner with, threw the news media with our news media's very corrupt, and idiotic "expertice" on firearms, types, nomenclatur, and no sense of exsisting laws.
In short: A Discrimiantion Campaign.
Now it makes sense for people who have a right to devote time, money , attention and activism to KEEP IT! But one has to wonder about someone devoting time and activism to take other Americans rights away.
Gun control lies aren't lies like a bow is not a bow.
