Second Cup Cafe: Joshua Radin
(CBS)
Joshua Radin may always have been in touch with his artistic side, but he didn't intend to become a singer/songwriter.
Radin grew up in Cleveland and attended Northwestern University, where he studied drawing and painting.
He pursued different creative paths as an art teacher, screenwriter and art gallery employee, but nothing really stuck until he started composing music.
When he introduced his song "Winter" for his college buddy (who happened to be "Scrubs" actor Zach Braff), his famous friend was sold.
Braff was so impressed with Radin's talent and folksy, rock sound, he got Radin's music played on "Scrubs" in 2004. The producers liked his music so much they asked for more, but Radin only had one song, so he had to get cracking on more.
Then the record companies started calling.
His big break on TV didn't end there: Radin's songs have also been featured on "Grey's Anatomy" and "One Tree Hill."
Today, Radin's hit song, "I'd Rather Be With You," is climbing the charts.
Radin stopped by The Early Show Saturday Edition's "Second Cup Cafe" to sing songs from his latest album, "Simple Times."
To top off being featured on TV's hottest shows, Radin was also asked to play at the wedding of comedic talk show host Ellen DeGeneres and actress Portia Del Rossi in 2008.
Radin and DeGeneres had met at a charity event and hit it off.
"I played her show twice and then she asked me to sing at her wedding," Radin told Billboard magazine. "I thought she was kidding at first, but I wound up singing at her ceremony. It was pretty amazing. She is one of the best fans you could ask for."
