Upcoming Film From Comic Sacha Baron Cohen Gets Preliminary NC-17 Rating -- Equivalent Of "X"

(CBS)  He's racy, raunchy, and at it again.

Comedic actor Sacha Baron Cohen is working on a movie that's already stirring controversy, some three months before its release.

Baron Cohen, best-known as the character "Borat," portrays one in the new movie named Bruno, and Bruno is even more extreme, it appears, than Borat.

Early cuts of the new flick -- also called "Bruno," contain scenes so lewd the Motion Picture Association of America gave it an NC -- 17 rating -- the equivalent of an "X," reports CBS News correspondent Michelle Gielan.

Baron Cohen, playing a gay Austrian fashionista, creates outrageous and sometime raunchy situations and ropes in real-life people.

Jill Bernstein, assistant managing editor of Entertainment Weekly, told CBS News, "Maybe there will be an NC-17 version released. That wouldn't surprise me. But I'd be shocked if Universal releases this film as an NC-17."

"R"-rated movies are usually much more profitable because more people can go see them. The MPAA says filmmakers can appeal decision.

And a Universal Studios spokesperson released a statement saying, "On its first submission, the film did not receive an 'R,' but it is far too early to say that there is any struggle to get there, as the process is only at its inception."

The question is, how much of the movie will end up on the cutting room floor by that time?
